Westminster College
New Wilmington, PA 16172-0001

College Description
Founded in 1852 and related to the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), Westminster College's liberal arts foundation thrives in a caring environment supported by an integrative curriculum featuring state-of-the-art technology and opportunities for involvement to prepare students for a diverse world.
Westminster College is the most affordable national liberal arts college in Pennsylvania, and Money Magazine calls Westminster "one of America's best college buys." U.S. News & World Report ranks Westminster in the top 10 of all colleges in providing a value-added education.
Over 1,500 students benefit from individualized attention from dedicated faculty, while choosing from 39 majors and more than 85 campus organizations on the New Wilmington, Pa. campus.
Westminster's safe 300-acre residential campus is nestled in the tranquil rolling hills of western Pennsylvania, just 60 miles north of Pittsburgh and 85 miles southeast of Cleveland.
Academic Life
At Westminster College you don't need to choose between a liberal arts education and a "career," between higher learning and hire learning. Here, they go hand in hand. In a world that is changing faster than ever, in a world that will be significantly different when you graduate, there will always be a market for a mind that can think, communicate, analyze and synthesize regardless of career choice.
This is why the first priority at Westminster is mind over matter. Our objective isn't just to fill your mind with facts, but also to teach you to use that mind with precision based on whatever facts are at hand. Not just to master a field of knowledge, but to see how all fields of knowledge are interconnected. When you've graduated from Westminster College, you won't just be prepared for a future career, you'll be prepared for whatever changes the future will bring.
Degrees Offered - bachelor of arts, bachelor of science, bachelor of music and master of education Majors - 39 academic majors plus six pre-professional programs, and numerous interdisciplinary offerings.
Campus Life
There's a difference between a real friend and an "acquaintance." We want you to have real friendships here. So we make sure there are plenty of activities and experiences to explore and enjoy while attending Westminster. That includes weekdays, weeknights, and weekends too!
Check out "The Down Under," our non-alcoholic pub. It's a great place to meet friends, dance, enjoy live entertainment, or simply grab a snack. There are over 85 student organizations on campus where you'll meet new people and learn how much more a "we" can accomplish than just a "me." The fact that Habitat for Humanity is the largest service organization on campus tells you something.
You can learn a lot about life in your studies, but if you're actually going to learn how to live, you have to get involved in life. It's easy to be involved here. You'll be welcomed no matter what organization you choose to join. You'll discover organizations with interests in music, politics, sports, media, ecology, exploring caves, social action, computers, arts, religion. The list is exhaustive.
Facilities and Resources
There is a sense of timelessness at Westminster. The beautiful town of New Wilmington that surrounds the campus seems a little like the mythical Brigadoon, caught in a more peaceful, well-ordered time. The Westminster campus is situated on 300 tree-lined acres that surround peaceful Brittain Lake, a popular place to canoe and fish in spring, ice skate in winter, or simply hang out or study on pleasant afternoons. Don't let the pastoral setting fool you. Westminster has one of the finest telecommunication networks in the region, with the entire campus connected to the Internet. Westminster also has a dozen technically-enhancing "Smart Classrooms" combining the latest in computer, video, and audio equipment. All residence hall rooms have free access to the Internet and e-mail, so you'll always be connected.
At Westminster, you'll also have access to outstanding facilities such as the multimillion dollar Hoyt Science Resources Center, which includes two electron microscopes and firsthand work areas, as well as our child development preschool laboratory, greenhouse, planetarium and observatory. The Hoyt Center compliments Westminster's outstanding performing arts and library facilities.
Athletics/Sports
The Westminster Department of Athletics is one of the most successful small college athletic programs in the nation. Success stories include the six-time national champion football team and the men's basketball program, one of the winningest programs in college basketball history. The Titan Athletic Department sponsors 16 varsity sports for men and women: baseball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's cross country, football, men's golf, men's and women's soccer, softball, men's and women's swimming, men's and women's tennis, track & field and volleyball. Teams compete in some of the top athletic facilities anywhere, including the newly-renovated Memorial Field House (featuring a state-of-the-art physical fitness center) and Harold Burry Stadium, which was also recently renovated and will also be the site of a new track complex in the next two years. Club sports and intramurals are also available for the entire student body.
Financial Aid
If you want to go to Westminster and you are a truly motivated student, we'll do everything we can to ensure that your financial situation won't stand in your way. Westminster is the most affordable national liberal arts college in Pennsylvania. Over the past year, more than $14 million in scholarships, grants, work study programs, and subsidized loans were awarded to Westminster students. All told, more than 80% of the student community receives financial aid based on need or merit. The average aid package is over $11,000 per year.
If you apply for financial aid, your need will be determined using the results of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Check out our financial aid web site at HYPERLINK.www.westminster.edu for more financial aid information.
Admission Requirements
Westminster College is a place for students serious about excellence in academic life. They find their efforts encouraged and rewarded in a stimulating, supportive environment. Going to Westminster is a fun experience, but you shouldn't confuse Westminster with one of the "party schools." Preserving our tradition of prestige and academic excellence is important to us. That is why admission to Westminster is reasonably competitive. It is based on variables such as your intellectual ability, academic record, and leadership potential. Our admissions committee treats each application individually, closely reviewing and considering your strengths and abilities.
Many factors, such as your high school grade point average, quality of courses, college aptitude test scores, and participation in school, church, and/or community activities are also considered. Because we value or tradition of small size and personalized education, each entering class is limited to approximately 365 students. Westminster operates on a rolling admissions basis. Completed applications on file at the College will be evaluated and admission decisions rendered weekly beginning Nov. 1 of the year prior to anticipated enrollment.
