About Rev. King:
Phil King earned the Western Regional Award from the Pennsylvania Black Conference on Higher Education. He was honored for his outstanding service and commitment to the PBCOHE over the past seven years. He has served in several of the group's leadership positions, including chaplain, and has hosted meetings at Westminster, shared vital statistics on multicultural education and programs, set up evaluations for the annual conference, and recruited minority students and faculty as members.

He earned the Distinguished Faculty Award from the Pennsylvania Black Conference on Higher Education's Student Leadership Conference in 1998.

King earned his bachelor's degree from Westminster and his master's of theology from International Bible Seminary. He has worked at Westminster College since 1992.

He is founder and chaplain of the Mercer County Jail Ministry program, a board member of the state prison ministry program for the state regional jail in Mercer County, community advisory board for Penn State-Shenango, immediate past president of the Shenango Valley Ministerium, and the regional delegate for the National Leadership Assembly of the Gamaliel Foundation of Chicago.

Multicultural Profile

Founded in 1852 and related to the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), Westminster College ranks in the top 10 in the nation in graduation rate performance, according to U.S. News & World Report, and is the most affordable national liberal arts college in Pennsylvania.

Over 1,600 students benefit from individualized attention from dedicated faculty, while choosing from 39 majors and nearly 100 campus organizations on the New Wilmington, Pa. campus.

The Westminster College Office of Multicultural Affairs serves as a resource for diversity issues to the entire campus, and promotes understanding of diversity among minority and majority students, faculty, administrators and staff.

The mission of Multicultural Affairs includes the achievement of true integration as shared power, building respect for distinct cultures, and the infusion of various perspectives in decision making and problem solving.

In addition, Multicultural Affairs will act as a coordinating agency between other organizations for the purpose of achieving interactive participation.

Providing Support Services:
The office provides services which promote student success and assist in removing barriers to student learning. Students seek assistance with problems which range from academics, housing, and finances to personal and emotional concerns.

Programs provided include:
* Assist students with book purchases and other emergencies

* Assistance with individual student concerns through referral and/or collaborative problem solving efforts with faculty, staff and students

* Assistance and referrals for on and off campus student housing problems

* Regular meeting with a financial aid representative to assist minority students with financial concerns

* References for students applying for scholarships and to graduate programs

* Building a network with alumni in terms of jobs, contacts and funding

* A special bulletin board with information about jobs, programs, internships, seminars, etc.

* Tracking the academic progress of minority students. The Director will meet with those individuals who require academic assistance, and make referrals to appropriate campus offices
