Wesleyan College
Macon, Georgia

Overview
Wesleyan College, chartered in 1836, has the distinction of being the world's first college chartered to grant degrees to women. Today, Wesleyan is regarded as one of the nation's finest colleges and remains dedicated to the education of women.

Wesleyan is a four-year, Methodist-related, liberal arts college. Enrollment is limited to fewer than 1,000 students. This is done primarily to support a learner-based curriculum that limits classes to no more than 20 students and to provide opportunities for meaningful participation in the life of the college community. Wesleyan's student body has been cited among the nation's most diverse and includes students from twenty-five states and thirty other countries.

The College is located on a beautiful 200-acre wooded campus. The Georgian-style brick buildings include two student apartment buildings. All residential halls have been recently renovated and offer single rooms and suites. Approximately 80 percent of students reside on campus. A multipurpose athletic facility includes a fitness center, an equestrian center, tennis courts, and soccer and softball fields. Among other recreational facilities are a gymnasium with a heated pool and a lake with a jogging trail.

Wesleyan also offers the Master of Arts degree in middle-level science and middle-level mathematics and in early childhood education. Open to women and men is the College's Executive Master of Business Administration program.

Location and Community
Wesleyan is located in a suburb of the beautiful, historic city of Macon, Georgia, the third-largest city in the state. Macon is the cultural, educational, medical, and economic leader of middle Georgia and is located about an hour's drive south of Atlanta. The city of Macon offers varied entertainment and many cultural opportunities, including the Georgia Music and Sports Halls of Fame. Visits by nationally and internationally acclaimed speakers and a series of popular and classical concerts are held on the Wesleyan campus each year, as are special events associated with Macon's renowned Cherry Blossom Festival.

Academic Life
The College's goal is to prepare students for a lifetime of learning and change. Each major program contains general education requirements for breadth of learning and major field requirements for career and/or graduate school preparation. All degree programs require the completion of 120 semester hours with a cumulative average of C (2.0) or better.

Wesleyan provides a challenging academic environment coupled with individualized attention. Each student is assisted by a faculty adviser, a preprofessional or career adviser, and a peer counselor in the selection of academic and internship experiences that lead to intellectual and career fulfillment. All classes are offered in a seminar style, with an emphasis on interactive or participatory learning. Each student has a research or internship experience.

Each entering full-time student is required to purchase a personal computer, for which the College offers special financing options. The ability to utilize information technology toward the enhancement of learning and career preparation is central to the academic program. The networked campus is connected to the Internet, which gives each student access to a world of information from her residence hall.

Credit by examination and exemption from required courses are possible with acceptable scores on the Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (I.B.), and College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) tests or acceptable grades in high school–college joint enrollment courses. Students may also exempt courses by taking departmental examinations. Thirty semester hours of credit is the maximum a student can receive by exemption through AP, I.B., CLEP, or departmental exams.

The College operates on an early semester plan. First-semester classes begin in late August and end in early December. The second semester begins in the beginning of January and ends with graduation in early May. Wesleyan College offers an optional May term as well as two summer school sessions.

The academic program at Wesleyan is guided by an exceptionally able, dedicated, and caring faculty. There are 49 full-time faculty members; 45 have earned doctoral or terminal degrees. The student-faculty ratio is 11:1. No courses are taught by graduate assistants. Faculty members serve as academic advisers and help students plan their academic program. Many professors participate in extracurricular activities with students on campus.

Through Wesleyan's International Study Abroad and Exchange Program, students can study abroad for one full year, one semester, a May term, or a summer session. Through cooperative agreements with the Institute for the International Education of Students (IES) and National Student Exchange (NSE), students may study abroad in Australia, China, France, Germany, Great Britain, Japan, Russia, Spain, and other countries. In addition, Wesleyan has direct exchange agreements with Sofia University (Bulgaria), Sookmyung Women's University (South Korea), International Christian University (Japan), Osaka University (Japan), Westminster College (England), and Ulyanovsk State University (Russia).

Off-campus opportunities in Macon are available through the Internship Program, which places students with area businesses, community agencies, health organizations, arts groups, and the media. Summer internships can be arranged through the Governor's Intern Program, in a student's hometown, and in other locations. Academic credit given for off-campus experiences varies.

Facilities and Resources
Willet Memorial Library has 142,619 volumes and subscribes to 500 periodicals. There are 33,352 items in microform and 4,200 tapes and records. Through the library's participation in GALILEO, students have access to more than 150 bibliographic and full-text databases. The library has informal study areas, individual carrels, seminar rooms, a music-listening room, and two smart classrooms. The Georgia Room houses 4,500 rare volumes and treasures of Americana. The Porter Fine Arts Building serves as a cultural center for the campus and community. It houses the music and theater departments, and, in addition to classrooms, offices, and studios, it contains two art galleries and a studio theater. Its Porter Auditorium has a seating capacity of 1,200 and contains one of the largest pipe organs in the Southeast. Taylor Hall houses laboratories and classrooms for science and math. This building includes state-of-the-art laboratory equipment, a computer lab, and an electronic classroom. Tate Hall contains classrooms for the Humanities, Social Science, and Education divisions. The art department is located in a 10,000-square-foot building designed exclusively for teaching the studio arts.

Campus Life
Most of the extracurricular activities of Wesleyan's students are coordinated through Activity Councils. The Campus Activities Board plans concert-dance weekends, events with nearby colleges, international fashion shows, holiday trips, and special dinners.

The Council on Religious Concerns encourages religious life on campus and sponsors activities that involve students with community life. Students volunteer at local institutions such as the Georgia Academy for the Blind, the Methodist Children's Home, and neighborhood schools and churches. They also participate in interest clubs, student publications, performing arts groups, honor societies, and professional fraternities. A number of College traditions are perpetuated by spirited but friendly competition among the four classes.

Wesleyan's Student Government Association, through an agreement with the president and faculty of the College, governs the student body with emphasis on responsibility and freedom. An honor system, based upon the concept that individual freedom is a right founded on responsibility, is inherent in campus life. Violations of student government regulations are handled through a system of judicial processes with a system for appeals.

Sports / Varsity Athletics
The Student Recreation Council coordinates competitive activities in basketball, soccer, softball, swimming, and individual sports. Wesleyan is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III. There are intercollegiate basketball, equestrian, soccer, softball, tennis, and volleyball teams.
