Multicultural Profile

The Naval Academy is not like any civilian college. It is not supposed to be. The Academy is the Navy's college and it functions as a military as well as an academic environment. You are not just entering a college, but preparing for a career in the Navy or Marine Corps, right from the first day.

"What are tuition and other expenses?" Nothing·it's a full four-year scholarship with free room and board, medical and dental care, a salary of about $544 each month, and a commission upon graduation. In return, you agree to serve at least six years on active duty as an officer in the Navy or Marine Corps.

"How's the academic program?" The 650-member faculty at the Academy is about half officers and half civilians. All courses are taught by faculty members themselves, none by graduate assistants. Extra instruction by the faculty is available on a one-to-one basis, if needed. Instructors are dedicated to help their students succeed.

Eighteen academic majors are offered in engineering, science, mathematics, and the humanities - the choice is yours. Depending on your selection, you must take at least 28 semester hours of military professional courses such as navigation, naval engineering, weapons, naval science, and naval history. A minimum of 140 semester hours is required for graduation.

"What is the graduation rate?" The Naval Academy is very proud that approximately 77 percent or better of our incoming freshmen graduate four years later. This is a clear statement of our commitment to your success.

"What is the professional training program like?" More than 2,000 hours of professional military training is woven through a midshipman's four year experience at the Academy. Your professional classroom studies are backed by many hours of practical training in sail and power craft, along with a wide range of opportunities for leadership development. During part of the summer, midshipment get on-the-job training in surface ships, submarines, aircraft, and Marine Corps units. These cruises offer an exciting introduction to life in the naval service, plus unique opportunities to see the world.

"How much emphasis is placed on sports and athletics?" The Academy places great emphasis on sports and physical conditioning in which each midshipman is required to participate. With its superb athletic facilities, the Academy supports 33 varsity sports teams, 23 intramural programs, and ten club sports throughout the year. If you enjoy competitive sports, we have it.

"Are there many extracurricular activities?" Even with a midshipman's demanding academic and athletic schedule, you will have time for extracurricular activities. We have more than 70 which gives you a chance to share recreational, professional, and athletic interests.

"Is there much social life?" During plebe (freshman) year, social life is limited. However, there are movies, concerts, plays, and plenty of athletic events at the Academy to attend. After the first year, social life opens up considerably, with more privileges and free time. Weekends allow for formal dances, sporting events, and visiting many interesting sights in the Washington-Baltimore area. "What's life at the Academy like?" · definitely anything but boring.

"Who is eligible to apply?" You must be a U.S. citizen of good moral character, at least 17 years old and not past your 22nd birthday on July 1 of the year you enter the academy. You must be unmarried, not pregnant, and have no legal obligations to support a child, children, or other individuals.

Minorities compose 18 percent of the student body. As you might expect, the program is demanding, but the opportunities are limitless·.and more than worth the effort.
