University of New Orleans
The spacious tree-studded campus is in one of the finest
residential areas of New Orleans overlooking Lake Ponchartrain.

College Description
The University of New Orleans is an urban university established in 1956 as a part of the Louisiana State University System. UNO is a distinguished member of the Urban 13, an association of the nation's top urban universities. Located on the southern shore of Lake Pontchartrain, only 15 minutes from the French Quarter, UNO occupies a 195-acre campus in one of the finest and safest residential areas of the city. The campus is easily accessible to historic plantations, the Aquarium of the Americas, the Superdome, and Audubon Park Zoo. Renowned for its Creole and Cajun cuisine, Mardi Gras, and the Jazz and Heritage Festival, New Orleans is a cosmopolitan port city that offers everything. World-class entertainers, sports events, the symphony, opera, and theater are enjoyed year round. The city's semitropical climate and thousands of acres of scenic public parks allow year-round outdoor activities. Since opening, the University has graduated over 43,000 alumni. UNO derives its strength from its urban setting and enhances the economic, social, and cultural life of New Orleans through its numerous research programs, community outreach programs, and special cooperative agreements. The university's economic impact on the community was $271.5 million last year and continues to grow. UNO has forged a partnership with New Orleans and Louisiana that anticipates the educational needs of the region into the 21st century. The university is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award baccalaureate, master's, and doctoral degrees. UNO enrolls nearly 12,000 undergraduate and 4,000 graduate students from 48 states and 84 countries.

Academic Life
UNO has six colleges offering a wide variety of studies in business administration, education, engineering, liberal arts, sciences, and urban and public affairs. The university offers 46 bachelor's, 37 master's, and 10 doctoral degree programs. All baccalaureate degree programs require a minimum of 128 semester hours earned with a quality point ratio of 2.0 or better on all work attempted, all UNO work, all work completed within the college, all work completed within the major, and all work completed in the last 60 semester hours. Programs leading to degrees with honors are offered in most academic majors. Credit for selected courses may be earned either through advanced standing exams administered by the academic departments or through the College Board's Advanced Placement and College-Level Examination Program tests. College credit may also be gained for Dantes and PEP tests and certain armed services and other nonacademic training. The academic year is composed of 16-week fall and spring semesters and three summer sessions. Sunrise, noontime, evening, and weekend classes are conveniently offered at the main campus and our three satellite campuses.

Campus Life
Nearly 120 student clubs and organizations are active on campus, including academic and professional groups that participate in over 140 different activities and special events. In addition, there are honor and leadership organizations, social fraternities and sororities, political clubs, service groups, musical organizations, and religious groups. UNO offers students a full range of activities and organizations to involve them in campus life. On- and near-campus housing is available. A coeducational residence hall and a brand-new apartment-style student complex meet the housing needs of single students. Married student housing is also available and quite affordable. All students may have cars on campus. UNO students can take advantage of career planning services through programs offering employment, internships, and career guidance, including computerized assessment. Students benefit from regular on-campus visits of corporate recruiters and gain experience in resume preparation, interview skills, and job search strategies.

Facilities and Resources
University facilities include the Earl K. Long Library with a 1.5 million-volume collection, a spacious University Student Center, a Children's Center where children of students can be cared for while their parents are in class, a nine-story state-of-the-art Engineering Complex, a new $9.7-million Chemical Sciences Building, a Performing Arts Center, and a Computer Research Center. UNO's baseball stadium and the Lakefront Arena, a premier venue for concerts and sports events, are located on the nearby east campus. The Office of Educational Support Services houses a Media Resource Center, a compressed video room, and a TV production studio. WWNO, the first public radio station in Louisiana, is located on the UNO campus.

Athletics/Sports
UNO fields teams in 7 men's sports (basketball, baseball, golf, tennis, cross country, and indoor and outdoor track and field) and 7 women's sports (basketball, volleyball, golf, tennis, cross country, and indoor and outdoor track and field). The University is a Division I member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and competes in the Sun Belt Athletic Conference.
