University of Illinois at Chicago
Chicago, IL 60680

College Description
The University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) is a comprehensive, public research university located in the heart of Chicago, one of the nation's most culturally rich and ethnically diverse cities. With an undergraduate student body of more than 16,000 and a thriving graduate and professional population of more than 9,000, UIC offers a high-quality education along with a variety of educational, social, and cultural opportunities both on and off campus.

UIC's campus occupies more than 240 acres, with 105 buildings within walking distance of Chicago's Loop. UIC is a vital part of the business, technological, and cultural fabric of the city. Students have easy access to hip-hop and blues clubs, jazz and classical music, Chicago Theatre, improv clubs, classical dance, modern dance, and performance art. UIC students participate in cooperative education, intern, and work in various sectors of Chicago's thriving economy, such as the city of Chicago, the Field Museum, and the Chicago Board of Trade.

Academic Life
Individual colleges set degree requirements, but all students who earn a bachelor's degree at UIC must earn a minimum of 120 semester hours of credit. Some programs require additional hours. Each college establishes core general education requirements that students must fulfill. Students must also fulfill residency requirements, usually by completing the last 30 semester hours of their degree at UIC.

UIC students may earn credit by examination through Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate Programs prior to college admission and through satisfactory completion of certain CLEP exams. Academically talented students may participate in the UIC Honors College, which offers mentoring, research opportunities, and scholarship assistance; the Guaranteed Professional Program Admissions (GPPA), which guarantees incoming freshmen a seat in the professional or graduate program of their choice; and joint programs with Chicago-area law schools. Students may participate in Army, Navy, or Air Force ROTC. Most departments offer minors.

UIC has approximately 2,400 faculty members. More than 80 percent of the faculty members hold a Ph.D., and three quarters of UIC's tenured faculty members teach freshmen courses. UIC's professors are nationally recognized in their fields. Two professors in UIC's College of Architecture and the Arts have recently received MacArthur Foundation "genius grants." A professor of English and disability studies was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship. A psychology professor was honored with a humanitarian award for her work in smoking prevention and cessation. UIC researchers and faculty members have been instrumental in the development of artificial skin and life-like cardiac tissue used to treat heart disease, and, most recently, the isolation of E1A, a gene responsible for the common-cold virus that appears to render tumor cells vulnerable to destruction.

UIC has begun construction of its south campus, University Village, a residential complex with shops, cafes, and restaurants.

UIC's two student unions are among the largest in the nation. Students can grab lunch there, shop for anything from greeting cards to mouthwash to cappuccino, workout at fitness centers, swim, play video games and pool, or bowl. UIC offers more than 180 registered student organizations, such as Urban Motion Dance Company, Bhakti-Yoga Society, and Alternative Spring Break as well as fraternities and sororities.

Facilities and Resources
UIC is affiliated with Chicago Technology Park, a major research center near campus that operates as a small-business incubator, fostering the transfer of information and technology from the laboratory to the marketplace. Ongoing research spans everything from 3-D medical imaging, video games, and holographic television to genotyping and genetic engineering.

The UIC Medical Center anchors the Illinois Medical District, providing clinics and facilities for applied health sciences and nursing students to conduct research, get practical experience, and do their residency.

The Great Cities Institute is UIC's focal point for new initiatives in interdisciplinary, applied urban research, and civic engagement.

The University Library consists of the Richard J. Daley Library, the main library; the Architecture and Art Library; the Library of the Health Sciences; the Mathematics Library; and the Science Library. The University Library features an online public-access catalog, a collection of subject-based online databases, and a statewide circulation and resource-sharing network, providing access to UIC holdings as well as more than 31 million volumes held by the forty-five academic libraries in Illinois.

The Academic Computing and Communications Center provides state-of-the-art computing resources to the UIC community. UIC's Writing Center provides free tutoring and consultation to students for any aspect of their writing. The Language Laboratory provides audio materials for foreign-language students and students who need additional study in English. Research into virtual-reality technology is ongoing at the CAVE, the University's virtual technology research lab.

Hull House, founded by Nobel laureate Jane Addams, is a National and Chicago Historic Landmark. Built in 1856, Hull House now functions as a museum with rotating exhibits and audiovisual presentations and is an excellent resource and inspiration for those students interested in social work and/or the social, cultural, and political history of the city of Chicago.

UIC has 277 classrooms, ranging from 300-seat lecture halls and state-of-the-art engineering labs to music practice rooms and art studios.

Sports/Varsity Athletics
With eighteen NCAA Division I athletics teams and intramural sports like flag football, softball, and the local favorite, "mudball," athletics is well represented at UIC. The campus also houses the 10,000-seat Pavilion, a venue that has hosted the NCAA Basketball Tournament, conventions, job fairs, and concert performances.

Financial Aid/Scholarships
The Office of Student Financial Aid administers federal aid programs for UIC students. Students may qualify for local, state, and federal grants and loan programs as well as Federal Work-Study to help defray costs. Nearly 70 percent of UIC's undergraduates receive financial aid that covers approximately 95 percent of their expenses. Many students are also eligible to receive institutional scholarships.

Students working with UIC faculty members have won the Rhodes Scholarship, Truman Scholarship, and Fulbright Fellowships.

Admission Requirements/Application
Freshman applicants must be a graduate of an accredited high school or submit minimum GED scores of 250 and present a satisfactory combination of class rank and ACT or SAT scores plus an acceptable high school course pattern. International and permanent resident/other noncitizen applicants must submit official scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) to UIC's Office of Admissions and Records at the address listed below.

The Office of Admissions and Records is open from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Additionally, the office is open one Saturday per month. Campus tours are available Monday through Friday; no reservation is required. Preview Days are also scheduled on selected weekdays and Saturdays.
