College Description
St. Thomas University is a private Catholic university centered around the liberal arts tradition. The University is one of only 13 Archdiocesan-sponsored institutions in the United States and the only one in the state of Florida. St. Thomas University was founded in 1961 as Biscayne College. Exceptional growth and the inauguration of a law school led to university status in 1984. Today, St. Thomas University is a major educational institution with approximately 2,500 students representing 28 states and 65 foreign countries. The University is a diverse community of learners working under Roman Catholic auspices with competence, objectivity, and respect for academic freedom. St. Thomas University offers quality undergraduate, graduate, and professional studies while placing an emphasis on lifelong value-oriented education. The University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS).

Academic Life
As a private university, St. Thomas offers a flexible set of general education requirements, including philosophy and religion, history and the humanities, the physical sciences and mathematics. St. Thomas University offers 25 major fields of study plus 4 pre-professional tracks. Major academic programs and departments at St. Thomas include the departments of Business Administration, Education, Communication Arts, Physical Sciences and Mathematics, Professional Management, Humanities, and Social Sciences and Counseling. The University's academic calendar is based on a semester schedule. Additional services offered by the University to help the students enhance their academic experience are the honors program, internship opportunities, and a summer study abroad program.

Campus Life
At St. Thomas we strive to provide the students with the most they can get out of their college experience. Outside of the classroom, students have the opportunity to get involved with many campus activities as well as organizations. Currently, the University is home to over 20 clubs and organizations that give expression to the many talents and interests of the St. Thomas students. A sample of the groups active on campus include: the Student Government Association, the International Student Organization, the Minority Student Union, the Pre-Medical Society, the Honors Society, and Campus Ministry. In addition, students can also take advantage of a wide array of comprehensive services, ranging from academic and personal assistance to career planning and placement. The University also offers on-campus housing facilities.

Facilities and Resources
Our 140-acre main campus with 14 major buildings includes a recently renovated student center, campus cafeteria, and three dormitories. Our modern and spacious library houses a 145,000- book collection, 850 periodicals, 35,000 government publications, a convocation hall, seminar rooms, and a fully equipped Media Center and Computer Lab. Nearby, Kennedy and O'Mailia Halls are our main academic centers, featuring science and computer labs, classrooms, the academic support center, the chapel, and administrative offices. Recreational sports at St. Thomas University include a variety of year-round activities, including intramural flag football, softball, basketball, and volleyball. On-campus athletic facilities include 6 tennis courts, a swimming pool, 2 basketball courts, 4 baseball fields, a soccer field, 2 football fields, and a fitness and training center for general student use.

Athletics/Sports
The University is a member of the NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) and the Florida Sun Conference. St. Thomas fields men's basketball, soccer, baseball, tennis, and golf and women's soccer, softball, tennis, and volleyball.

Financial Aid
At St. Thomas we have always been committed to providing financial assistance to students who would otherwise be unable to pursue their education. Last year, 85% of our students received financial assistance, with an average aid award of $7,500 per student. St. Thomas participates in federal, state, and institutional need-based financial aid programs by offering scholarships, grants, loans, and work-study opportunities. We also offer merit scholarships to academically talented students and athletic grants to athletes of outstanding ability. Some of our major scholarships include: Honors Scholarships, St. Thomas Scholarship, Catholic High School Grants, Transfer Assistance Program, and International Student Scholarships.

Admission Requirements
Applicants to St. Thomas University must submit the following information directly to the Office of Admissions: A completed application form along with a $30 processing fee An official copy of high school transcript sent directly from the high school SAT or ACT scores Letters of recommendation 250-300 word essay St. Thomas University evaluates applications on a rolling basis. We encourage students to make application any time after the close of their junior year in high school. Applications will be reviewed as soon as all the items listed above are received by the Office of Admissions.
