Swarthmore College was founded by the Society of Friends in 1864 as a private, coeducational college. Swarthmore is located in suburban setting eleven miles southwest of Philadelphia. We have 1,346 undergraduate students and the minority student population is: African and African-American, seven percent; Latino and Hispanic, five percent; and Asian, Indian and Pacific Islander, nine percent. The student body includes students from 48 states and 40 foreign countries. Special features include: a 325-acre campus which is a registered, national arboretum, a student/faculty ratio of 9:1, External Examination Program (honors), double majors and interdisciplinary work including gender and ethnic studies, study abroad, cross registration with area college (Bryn Mawr, Haverford and University of Pennsylvania), over 25 intercollegiate sports for men and women, a lively performing arts center including theatre, dance and music, and a diverse student body. There are over 100 student-run clubs and organizations, included among them, various groups and centers for multicultural support: Swarthmore African-American Student Society (SASS), Hispanic Organization for Latino Awareness (HOLA), Black Cultural Center (BCC) and the Intercultural Center (IC). Major courses of study include an extensive list of the arts, humanities, social sciences, ethnic and gender studies, and math and natural sciences, including a four-year engineering program in computer, civil, electrical, and mechanical engineering. Application deadlines are: Fall early decision, November 15; winter early decision, January 1; and regular decision, February 1. The College has a "need-blind" admissions policy which accepts qualified students regardless of their ability to pay, and one of the most generous financial aid policies in the country. Approximately 45 to 50 percent of the student receive aid. |
