SUNY-Farmingdale offers both bachelor and associate
degrees in engineering technologies, health, business
and computer systems, and liberal arts.
College Description
SUNY Farmingdale is Long Island's first public college and has been preparing people for the workforce through an array of the highest quality of educational programs throughout its history. Today, in addition to traditional programs in business, health sciences, and liberal arts, the College offers distinct programs in the technologies and applied sciences that prepare people for careers in emerging growth industries, thus supporting the economic development of New York State. The 350 acre campus is located in the middle of Long Island on the border of Nassau and Suffolk Counties. Accessible from all major roadways, the College is only minutes away by car from some of the world's finest beaches, including Jones Beach and Fire Island.
Academic Life
The curricula are organized into four schools: Arts and Sciences, Business, Engineering Technologies, and Health Sciences and Human Services. Graduation credit requirements vary from program to program. Students must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0.
The College presently offers the Bachelor of Science degree in aeronautical science-professional pilot, applied mathematics, automotive management technology, aviation administration, computer (engineering) technology, construction (engineering) management technology, electrical engineering technology, facility management technology, management of technology, manufacturing engineering technology, and security systems. The Bachelor of Technology degree is offered in visual communications.
The University parallel associate degree programs include advertising art and design, aerospace technology, aircraft maintenance-mechanical technology, apprentice training, automotive engineering technology, automotive technology, biomedical engineering technology, business administration, computer information systems, computer science, computer systems technology: business programming and systems, construction/architectural engineering technology, criminal justice, dental hygiene, electrical engineering technology, food and nutrition, liberal arts and sciences, mechanical engineering technology, medical laboratory technology, nursing, and ornamental horticulture. In addition, the College offers many certificate programs along with a one-year college preparatory program and the one- and two-semester undeclared major program.
There is a distinguished full-time faculty, consisting of 171 members, who possess both the highest credentials and industrial experience. Most faculty members in the College's curricula are still actively involved with business and industry, thereby constantly exposing their students to the most contemporary practices in their respective fields of study. In addition, the College is recognized and commended for its small class and accessible faculty members by students and alumni responding to annual surveys.
The College calendar consists of a fall and spring semester and a three-part summer session.
SUNY Farmingdale is fully accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. All programs are approved by the New York State Department of Education. All applicable programs are registered with and accredited by the requisite professional accrediting bodies.
Campus Life
Students participate in on-campus activities throughout the year, including films, concerts, theater productions, lectures, art exhibitions, and all-College theme weekends; there are also opportunities to become involved in the campus radio station. Dozens of clubs and organizations respond to a variety of interests, ranging from skydiving to philosophy. Intercollegiate competition for men is sponsored in baseball, basketball, cross-country, golf, indoor and outdoor track, lacrosse, soccer, tennis, and wrestling. Women's intercollegiate sports are basketball, cheerleading, cross-country, soccer, softball, tennis, track, and volleyball. An extensive intramural program is also available. While the Farmingdale student body numbers more than 5,000, more than 22,000 people utilize the campus each year, attending workshops, seminars, summer sessions, sports events, the Festival of the Arts, and the circus.
The Student Government Association has authority over all student organizations and elects officers on an annual basis. Sixteen senators and 7 executive board members compose the governing board, which acts in matters promoting the interests of the College and its students.
Five residence halls feature lounges, study rooms, recreation rooms, and laundry facilities. The Cohen Infirmary is equipped and staffed for both inpatient and outpatient care. The Student Union houses a theater, gymnasium, weight room, and billiards room. The Career Development Center offers career counseling, career-planning seminars, job interviews, resume writing, job placement for the disabled, and opportunities for permanent, part-time, and summer jobs. A reference library of occupational and educational information is open daily. Counseling and support services include academic, financial aid, career, psychological, and residence-life counseling.
Recent reports show that Farmingdale graduates experience a high job placement and transfer rate. Of those employed, 76 percent are working in the area in which they were prepared at Farmingdale. Fifty-five percent of the respondents in last year's graduating class continued their education at public and private colleges and universities throughout the nation.
Facilities and Resources
The Greenley Library has a collection of more than 125,000 volumes, 25,000 pamphlets, and microforms and other materials. Tutoring services in all disciplines taught at the College are available as are evaluations to detect learning disabilities and assess problems in reading, writing, and mathematics. Computer facilities include a multinode DEC cluster computer system, numerous online video monitor terminals, hundreds of microcomputers, and a computer graphics center. An on-campus Child Care Center provides child care for the children of students, faculty members, and alumni. Other academic facilities include a Technology Transfer and Utilization Center, a modern physical education facility, health-care facilities, abundant state-of-the-art technical equipment, a fleet of single- and twin-engine airplanes, an impressive greenhouse complex, modern classrooms, and many laboratories for engineering, biology, chemistry, and physics.
Athletics/Sports
The purpose of the Intercollegiate Athletic Program is to support and expand the total educational experience offered by the College. The program serves as a laboratory for the education of student athletes and is conducted in keeping with the general educational mission of the College.
The program is designed to educate student athletes in such areas as: good sportsmanship, leadership, teamwork, health and well-being, loyalty and overall character development. The College is committed to the ideals of a quality intercollegiate athletic program that contributes to its objectives of offering its students a quality educational experience. The College supports the intercollegiate program and student athletes within the guidelines of the State University Board of Trustees.
The program offers student athletes a wide variety of opportunities for participation. The College is a Division III member of the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association).
The Farmingdale Intercollegiate Program is one of the finest in the country. The College is proud of its many teams and individual athletes who have received both regional and national recognition.
The College currently offers the following intercollegiate sports: Men's Baseball, Men's & Women's Basketball, Men's & Women's Cross Country, Men's Golf, Men's & Women's Indoor Track, Men's Lacrosse, Men's Soccer, Women's Soccer, Women's Softball, Men's Tennis, Women's Tennis, Men's & Women's Track & Field, Women's Volleyball and Men's Wrestling.
Financial Aid
Almost 70 percent of Farmingdale's students receive some kind of financial aid. Farmingdale participates in the Federal Pell Grant, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG), Federal Work-Study, Federal Perkins Loan, Federal PLUS loan, Federal Stafford Student Loan, and Federal Unsubsidized Stafford Loans programs. The College also participates in New York State's Tuition Assistance Program (TAP), Regents Award for Children of Deceased Police Officers or Firefighters, Scholarship for Children of Deceased or Disabled Veterans, and U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs Aid to Native Americans as well as other state grant and scholarship programs. Students are encouraged to apply for private scholarships from the Farmingdale College Foundation, Farmingdale Alumni Association, and other organizations and companies. Emergency loans are available from the Student Government Association and Alumni Association. Approximately $8 million is awarded annually through these programs.
To apply for financial aid, students must file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid as early as possible. In addition, May 1 is the preferred and recommended filing date for the College's financial aid application.
Admission Requirements
Applicants to baccalaureate and associate degree programs must have graduated from high school or hold a high school equivalency diploma. Students apply and are accepted to a specific curriculum. Admission requirements vary according to the program selected. The SAT or ACT is required. Decisions are based primarily on grades earned in academic courses, including the specific high school prerequisite courses of each curriculum. The review process takes into account the applicant's individual overall background, including available data such as test scores, rank in class, and teacher/counselor recommendations. A personal interview is not required but may be beneficial to the candidate. Applicants with subject deficiencies may make up work prior to registration. When necessary, remedial programs are recommended.
A limited number of high school seniors are admitted to Farmingdale under an early admission program.
Applicants to the baccalaureate programs may apply as freshmen or upper-division transfer students.
