College Description
SUNY Brockport cherishes its 131 proud years of public higher education. Within the SUNY system, this comprehensive college has a long tradition of providing education of the highest quality. The College is committed to serving a large, diverse student population, whose varying interests and needs reflect the complex challenges of contemporary society. "A suburban college in Western Monroe County, Brockport has 6,573 undergraduate students, mostly from New York state; 11.6 percent represent minorities, 25% percent are international students." As the preeminent regional public university for the greater Rochester area, Brockport provides academic excellence in the liberal arts and professions; maintains a campus community that fosters integrity, civility, and justice; promotes diversity in curricula, programs, and access; prepares students for life in a global society; and uses information technology to enhance teaching and learning. The College is accredited by the Board of Regents of the State of New York, the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, and several professional associations.
Academic Life
With its three schools (Arts and Performance, Professions, and Letters and Sciences, Brockport offers B.A. and B.S. degrees in 39 undergraduate majors, including the only international business major in the SUNY system, and a B.F.A. in dance. Among the most popular programs are business administration, psychology, nursing, criminal justice, communication, biology, and English. Distinctive programs include: Delta College, which emphasizes experiential learning and combines an interdisciplinary approach allowing for a time-shortened or time-variable option; the 3-1-3 program, a time- and cost-saving program for high school seniors to earn college credit; and a 3+2 engineering program, combining three years of liberal arts at Brockport and two years of engineering at one of five prestigious northeastern universities. Army ROTC is available. Teacher certification programs are offered in elementary, secondary, and K-12 education. Students preparing to teach complete both an academic major and appropriate teacher preparation program. Brockport has the largest international education program in the SUNY system and one of the largest in the country. The College follows the semester system.
Campus Life
Brockport Student Government has an annual budget of nearly $975,000, which funds 80 student-run clubs. There are also 14 Greek sororities and fraternities, and several organizations in which students work with faculty and staff, such as the PACE Team, which fosters healthy interracial relationships. Some 2,100 students live in various types of campus residence halls, including coed, and special option housing for freshmen and transfers. Freshmen are guaranteed College housing; there are no triples. The Office of Residential Life provides a program to ensure a high quality of residential life that complements Brockport's educational mission. The Rakov Center for Student Services houses most student services within a convenient building, including the Admissions Office, Bursar's Office, Educational Opportunity Program, Financial Aid Office, International Education, and Registration and Records. The Office for Students with Disabilities and the Cultural Center are located in nearby Seymour College Union. And just down the campus mall are the Health and Counseling Centers.
Facilities and Resources
The campus is spacious, with 60 buildings and athletic fields occupying about one-fourth of the 591-acre campus. The remaining area is gently rolling open or wooded land. The College mall, stretching from traditional Hartwell Hall to contemporary high-rise residence halls, is a lovely pedestrian thoroughfare. • Students may choose to live in a high-rise or a two- or three-story residence hall, in either a room with corridor-style baths or in a suite with self-contained bath and study room. Even more impressive are the academic facilities. Brockport's library houses an open-stack collection of 530,000 books, 105,000 bound journals, 2.0 million units of microtext, and extensive AV materials. A computerized catalog and other on-line services help users locate materials locally and worldwide. The College's computing services offer more than 450 Pentiums campuswide; Internet access in every room in every residence hall and campuswide; an impressive computing center with hundreds of stations and the latest software; and year-round workshops to get students started. In addition to the Office for Students with Disabilities, which ensures that the needs of those with disabilities are met, Brockport's campus is ADA-compliant, down to the catwalk in its main theatre.
Athletics/Sports
Brockport's modern, extensive athletic facilities include six gymnasiums, two Olympic-size pools, an ice rink, weight rooms, a 9,500-seat stadium, and myriad racquet sport courts. There are 23 Division III teams. Women choose from basketball, gymnastics, field hockey, lacrosse, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and field, volleyball, and cross country. Men can play golf, baseball, basketball, cross country, football, ice hockey, soccer, swimming, indoor and outdoor track and field, and wrestling-which has finished in the top 10 in the nation 20 times in the last 27 years, with five national championships. Intramural teams are formed each fall and continue through the year, including volleyball, broomball, racquetball, and softball. Some teams are co-ed or include faculty and staff. Club sports include judo, rugby, skiing, and lacrosse.
Financial Aid
Approximately 65 percent of Brockport's students receive some form of financial aid. The College participates in the Federal Pell Grant, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant, Federal Direct Student Loan, Federal Perkins Loan, Nursing Loans, and Federal Work-Study programs. New York state residents may qualify for Tuition Assistance Program awards, State University Supplemental Tuition Assistance, Assistance for Part-time Study, and Educational Opportunity Grants. Special state scholarships are available for veterans and children of deceased or disabled veterans. The Office of Financial Aid assists students in identifying applicable programs and prepares estimated financial aid packages for all accepted students prior to the payment of any advance fees. Numerous campus-controlled scholarships are also available. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid is required of all aid applicants.
Admission Requirements
Students applying for freshman admission are evaluated on their three-year high school average, class rank, and ACT or SAT I scores. All applicants must have earned a minimum of 16 academic units in English, mathematics, science, social studies, and foreign language courses. Admission is selective; 57.6percent of 946 freshman applicants were accepted for fall 1997. The mean high school average of 855 full-time freshmen for fall 1996 was 84.5 with mean SAT I verbal and math scores of 500 and 507 respectively. The ACT mean composite score was 21.2. Brockport encourages the application of transfer students who have earned the associate degree (A.A., A.S., or A.A.S.) with a minimum GPA of 2.25. Brockport offers Rolling Admissions. Enrollment quotas and prerequisites may restrict admission to some majors, and teacher certification programs. Accepted applicants receive 60-64 transfer credits and junior status with completion of the associate degree. Special admission programs, including the Educational Opportunity Program, Summer Transition Program, and Exceptional Talent Admission, are offered in the fall only. The Excel Program and deferrals of admission are also available. Interviews are not required, but a visit to the campus is strongly encouraged. A supplemental information form is requested from all applicants.
