Stonehill
College
Easton, Massachusetts

Overview
Stonehill
is a competitive, coeducational, Catholic college located just south of
Boston. Established in 1948 by the Congregation of Holy Cross (founders
of the University of Notre Dame, Indiana), Stonehill continues the rich
Holy Cross tradition of a rigorous liberal education. As a comprehensive
undergraduate college of 2,200 full-time degree students, Stonehill offers
thirty-one major programs in the liberal arts, natural sciences, and business.
The College’s programs, through an involved and engaging faculty
and a commitment to experiential learning, aim to foster effective communication,
critical-thinking, and problem-solving skills in all students.
Over seventy organized
student groups representing academic societies, multicultural interests,
music (as well as performance), community service, and shared interests,
in areas such as Amnesty International, the environment, and the EMS Club,
enable Stonehill’s student population of 2,200 to actually get involved.
In addition to the
undergraduate programs listed below, the College offers a Master of Science
in Accountancy degree.
Location and Community
Just 22 miles south of Boston, Stonehill is located in the town of Easton
(population 23,242). Featuring stunning Georgian-style architecture, the
College’s thirty-one main buildings are set among a beautifully
landscaped 375-acre campus of ponds, rolling fields, and wooded glens.
The beaches of Cape Cod and the mansions and history of Newport and Providence,
Rhode Island, are within 45 minutes of the campus, as are major concert
(the Tweeter Center for Performing Arts) and sports (Gillette Stadium)
venues. The most popular off-campus destination is Boston. Students from
more than sixty area colleges and universities converge on Boston to experience
its museums, art galleries, shopping and dining, theaters, sporting events,
and other exciting nightlife offerings. During the week, Stonehill students
enhance their academic experience through internships with the city’s
plethora of high-tech, medical, and financial institutions.
The College provides
a shuttle service that connects to Boston’s subway system and area
shopping. Stonehill’s student government organization also has vans
that student clubs can reserve for trips to sporting events, concerts,
skiing, and other activities.
Academic
Life
Stonehill’s primary mission is to provide a challenging program
of academic studies in the liberal arts tradition that engages students
in a lifelong quest for intellectual excellence and dedication to service.
All students receive a strong foundation in the liberal arts in addition
to expertise in one or more fields. The liberal arts courses in the core
curriculum are designed to help students understand their culture, find
and analyze information, develop critical-thinking skills, and become
effective communicators. Developing writing proficiency is a central objective
of the core curriculum and is emphasized in all classes.
Interaction with faculty
members and academic advisers is a vital part of a Stonehill education.
At freshman orientation, each student is assigned an academic adviser.
Students who declare a major are assigned a faculty mentor from within
their major; students who do not declare a major receive assistance from
an adviser who specializes in helping undecided students. Advisers help
students choose their major, approve course selections, and give advice
on study-abroad, internship, and graduate school opportunities.
Students are encouraged
to explore various fields of interest in their first two years, but they
must choose a major by the middle of their junior year. They take five
courses a semester and must complete forty courses to receive a bachelor’s
degree.

perhaps why almost everyone lives on campus all four years. Housing is
guaranteed, and 89 percent of all students live on-campus.
A new 90,000-square-foot
state-of-the-art science center is planned to open in fall 2009. This
exciting science facility will include research labs with advanced technology

workshops focused on library research skills.
The Joseph W. Martin
Institute for Law and Society serves as a regional center for education,
research, and public service. The Martin Institute features an archival

Financial
Aid / Scholarships
The College is committed to helping each qualified student find the resources
to meet the cost of a Stonehill education. In fact, Stonehill distributes
more than $32 million a year in scholarships and financial aid to a full-time
student body of 2,200 students. Last year, the average financial aid package
awarded to first-year applicants who demonstrated a need was $19,271.
Stonehill also awards a competitive number of merit-based scholarships
to outstanding students who do not demonstrate a financial need. Stonehill’s
merit fund program awards scholarships ranging from $4,000 to $15,000
per year.
To file for Stonehill
scholarship and/or financial aid consideration, students should simply
complete the online CSS PROFILE form at http://profileonline.collegeboard.com.
Stonehill’s CSS PROFILE code number is 3770. In addition, students
must file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid Assistance (FAFSA)
online at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov in order to be considered for government
funds. The College’s federal code number for the FAFSA form is 002217.
Admission
Requirements / Application
Admission to Stonehill is selective. Annually, over 5,600 high school
students apply for 600 places. The College actively seeks an academically
strong, geographically, culturally, and ethnically diverse student body.
In the admissions process, all information on each applicant is carefully
considered, but academic performance and curriculum in high school are
given the greatest weight. The Admissions Committee evaluates the depth
and strength of each applicant’s course selection and the consistency
of their grades. Competitive students should have completed a strong academic
program from among their high school’s most challenging offerings.
Students may submit testing scores from either the SAT or ACT program.
The Admissions Committee also evaluates extracurricular activities, work,
volunteer and community activities, recommendations, and writing samples.
The College awards credit for strong scores on Advanced Placement, CLEP,
and higher-level International Baccalaureate exams.
