College Description
Saint Leo University was founded in 1889, making it the oldest Catholic college in Florida. The university has an enrollment of 1,400 full- and part-time students on its University Campus in Saint Leo, Florida. SLU is located about 30 minutes north of Tampa and less than 90 minutes from Orlando. Our location helps students in arranging internships with major corporations, and provides many recreational and social opportunities.
SLU offers majors such as accounting, biology, business administration, computer information systems, social work, education, sport management, and criminology. Pre-professional programs (pre-med, pre-law, pre-dent, pre-vet) are also available.
Merit and need-based financial aid is offered; over 95% of entering freshmen receive some form of institutional aid.
Saint Leo offers many extracurricular activities, including student organizations, Greek life, intramural sports, club teams in lacrosse and NCAA Division II athletics. The University operates six residence halls, and each student receives a personal laptop computer to use in Saint Leo's wireless environment.
Academic Life
Saint Leo operates on a semester system, with terms starting in August and January of each year. The semester is approximately 15 weeks in length; students generally average 15-16 credits per semester.
Each student completes a liberal-arts based General Education program as part of their degree requirements. These courses help students develop skills in written and oral communication, critical thinking, computation, analytical reasoning, and problem solving. By the end of sophomore year (if not before), students choose a major.
The academic majors are grouped into three different divisions: School of Arts & Sciences, School of Business, and the School of Education and Social Services. Saint Leo also offers Master's degree programs in Business Administration, Education, and Counseling Psychology (beginning in 2001).
Special programs include Study Abroad partnerships with programs in Paris, London, and Rome, two locations in Switzerland, and Ecuador.
The Honors Program at Saint Leo attracts highly motivated and talented students. Admission to the Honors Program is available to freshmen and transfer students. Honors students receive a laptop computer to use while at Saint Leo. After completion of 60 hours of coursework, the student may keep the computer!

Campus Life
The University has over 35 student clubs and organizations. Students may participate in Greek life through local and national fraternities and sororities, or become involved in community service, social, or literary groups. There is also a Student Leadership Development program to help personal and group leadership skills.
The Office of Student Activities coordinates a full calendar of on- and off-campus events, including trips to Disney World and Busch Gardens, professional sporting events, and professional theatrical performances. These trips are offered at low or no cost to students.
The University operates six residence halls, and on-campus housing is guaranteed for all four years. Students are required to live on campus unless they are 21 or living with their parents and commuting less than 25 miles to campus. Each residence hall room is equipped with a laptop computer and two Internet connections. Rooms also have full cable TV and phone service.
A variety of services are provided for students, including wellness and health, counseling, career and recreation services.
Facilities and Resources
The campus is situated on 153 rolling hills along the shores of Lake Jovita. The architectural style of the campus combines Spanish Florida baroque and contemporary design. One of the most striking buildings is the Abbey Church. Built from stone, this striking building serves as the focus of the Saint Leo Abbey community. Guests are welcome to attend services at the Abbey Church.
The Cannon Memorial Library houses over 115,000 volumes, as well as thousands of microform items and audio/videotapes and CD. Over 700 periodicals are available in the library. The library also has two complete computer classrooms and a separate public computing lab.
The Bowman Activities Center contains a 2750-seat gymnasium, weight training room, outdoor swimming pool, outdoor racquetball courts, and classroom space.
The University's lakefront provides outdoor recreation activities including sailing, canoeing, and sand volleyball.
Crawford Hall and Lewis Hall are the main classroom buildings. Lewis houses the laboratory science, mathematics, and most business administration classes. There is also a "smart" classroom featuring PCs and an LCD projector, Internet connections, and printers. The Selby Auditorium is home to special lectures and campus theatre productions.
Athletics/Sports
Saint Leo competes in the Sunshine State Conference in NCAA Division II. Coaches can offer athletic scholarships to top recruits, and also hold tryouts for their individual sports.
Men compete in baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, soccer and tennis. Women compete in cross country, basketball, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, and volleyball.
Students should plan to complete the NCAA Clearinghouse process during their senior year of high school to ensure their eligibility to compete as entering freshmen.
Intramural competition is also available in several sports. Among the most popular are: flag football, swimming, basketball, volleyball, and softball.
The University operates its own 18-hole golf course, and students may play one game free each week. Saint Leo also has water activities on the lakefront.
Financial Aid
Saint Leo uses the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form to determine eligibility for financial aid. For Fall 1999, 97% of the entering students in Fall 2000 received financial assistance of some type. The average financial aid package for the Fall 1999 entering class was $11,276.
Students are automatically considered for academic scholarships as they are reviewed for admission. Athletic scholarships are determined by the coaches in each sport.
Saint Leo participates in Federal and State (Florida) financial aid programs, and the institution awards over $4 million of university funds to students each year.
The priority deadline for financial aid application is March 1 (for students entering in the fall) and November 1 (for students entering in the spring).
Admission Requirements
Admission is based on consideration of a student's high school or college coursework and grades, letters of recommendation, and essay. Freshmen must also submit results from standardized test scores (either the SAT or ACT). Each student is evaluated individually; the admission decision takes extracurricular involvement, leadership, and academic performance into account.
Freshmen are expected to complete a minimum of 16 academic credits in high school, distributed as follows: 4 English, 3 math (including Algebra I & II, and geometry), 3 history/social science, 2 natural science, 2 foreign language, and 2 academic electives.
Interviews are recommended but not required. The purpose of the interview is to assess the student's likelihood of success at Saint Leo, and to aid the student in selecting the college that will provide the best fit. Campus visit appointments are available Monday through Friday, 8:00 to 5:00, and on Saturdays during the school year from 9:00 to noon. The typical campus visit includes an admission appointment, campus tour, and classroom observation or meetings with faculty in areas of interest.
Applications are available from the Office of Admission, or on-line at www.saintleo.edu. Saint Leo is a member of the Common Application group, and use of the Common App is encouraged.
