Overview
St. Joseph’s College of Nursing, affiliated with St. Joseph’s Hospital Health Center in Syracuse, NY, prepares its students to be nursing leaders in a global health care environment. Integrating nursing science with liberal arts, St. Joseph’s College of Nursing helps learners from a variety of diverse backgrounds become passionate healers and professional, ethical, caring and competent nurses. Recognizing the increasingly complex challenges of providing holistic nursing care in an increasingly complex society, the College utilizes innovative strategies, interdisciplinary collaborations, and community partnerships to deliver future-oriented, technologically advanced education.
Established in 1898, the College remains committed to its original vision: to educate and prepare students to practice professional nursing with compassion, excellence, vision, enthusiasm and integrity, while providing a strong sense of community that supports both professional and personal growth. Offering both Weekday and Weekend study options leading to an associate’s degree in applied science with a major in nursing, the College also offers a Dual Degree Partnership in Nursing with Le Moyne College, which allows high school students to achieve both an associate and a baccalaureate degree in four years, and a 2 + 2 Option that allows students to earn their associate’s degree from St. Joseph’s College of Nursing in two years, and then complete their bachelor’s degree in two more years of study as a transfer student at one of several area schools, including Le Moyne College and State University of New York (SUNY) Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, St. John Fisher and Nazareth College in Rochester, or Utica College and SUNY College of Technology in Utica.
If you’re looking for a college experience that will help you develop all of your skills and talents while preparing you for a great professional career that makes a difference, you belong at St. Joseph’s College of Nursing!

St. Joseph’s College of Nursing is accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) and is a candidate for accreditation by Middle States Commission on Higher Education. St. Joseph’s Hospital Health Center, which is affiliated with St. Joseph’s College of Nursing, has been designated as a Magnet Hospital for Nursing Excellence by the American Nurses Credentialing Center, an achievement earned by a fraction of the nation’s hospitals, and is the only hospital in Central New York to be so recognized.
RN Programs of Study
The academic curriculum at St. Joseph’s College of Nursing is designed to develop our students’ intellectual and professional skills, while also providing a holistic approach to nursing. Our students are able to integrate nursing theory with arts and sciences, think critically in professional practice, communicate effectively, treat patients with care and compassion, collaborate in the management of care, and engage in lifelong learning and professional activities.
Students in the Weekday Option attend classes on a four-semester schedule, much as any full-time college student would. The Weekend Option allows students to continue working full time, while attending classes on weekends. The program begins in January, and classes meet every other weekend from late afternoon Friday through Sunday evening, with clinical rotations at St. Joseph’s Hospital Health Center on Saturday and Sunday mornings. Weekend students who live outside of the Syracuse area may request to stay in our residence hall on weekends for a nominal fee. As with any college course of study, additional time at the college and at home preparing for classes and clinical can be expected for students in both the weekday and weekend programs.
All students attend classes and start participating in clinical rotations early in the first semester, giving you the opportunity to apply classroom theory to practice immediately. Students can earn an associate in applied science degree and be eligible to take the NCLEX-RN licensure exam in just two years. And for those who are experienced Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs), our Advanced Placement Option exempts those who qualify from three first-semester introductory nursing courses.
You’ll find that our classes are small, allowing for interaction between students and faculty, and that our instructors are generous with their time and attention. And unlike many four-year nursing programs which require two years or more of coursework before clinical experience begins, St. Joseph’s puts students at the patient’s bedside within six weeks of starting the first semester. You’ll complete up to 180 hours of clinical practice each semester, rotating through several departments, including pediatrics, medical/surgical, oncology, geriatrics and psychiatry. You’ll take courses in professional nursing practice, psychiatric nursing, adult medical/surgical nursing, obstetrics, pediatrics and pharmacology, which complements the “direct patient care” clinical rotations. In addition, students take 30 credits in liberal arts and science coursessuch as general psychology, anatomy and physiology, and nursing ethicsthrough our affiliate, Le Moyne College.
(Please note: Due to full enrollment, St. Joseph’s College of Nursing is currently accepting applications for its Weekday Option for Fall of 2011, and for its Weekend Option for Spring of 2012.)
If you choose to further your education, St. Joseph’s graduates are given special consideration for transfer to one of several area colleges offering a BS in nursing through our 2+2 Option.
2+2 Option
Students choosing this option may take the national licensing exam and begin working as a registered nurse after earning their two-year associate’s degree from St. Joseph’s College of Nursing, while completing a bachelor of science degree in nursing at one of our partner colleges: Le Moyne College or State University of New York (SUNY) Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, Nazareth College or St. John Fisher College in Rochester, or SUNY Institute of Technology or Utica College in Utica. The 2 + 2 Option offers several competitive advantages. Many four-year programs require students to complete at least two years of classroom study before they even begin hands-on patient care. But at St. Joseph’s, you’ll start working with patients just six weeks into your first semester, giving you immediate clinical experience and the opportunity to test your commitment to nursing right away. In addition, the cost of tuition for two years at St. Joseph’s equals that of just one year at a public university, so the 2+2 Option can add up to significant cost savings. You can earn your bachelor’s degree in four years, but start working as a registered professional nurse after just two years.
Dual Degree Partnership
The innovative Dual Degree Partnership in Nursing (DDPN) represents a unique partnership between Le Moyne College and St. Joseph’s College of Nursing. Designed for recent high school graduates, students enroll at Le Moyne College for the full four years, and are jointly enrolled at St. Joseph’s College of Nursing for years two and three of the program, completing two years of full-time study at Le Moyne College in years one and four, and two middle years of full-time study at St. Joseph’s College of Nursing. This allows high school students to earn both an associate’s degree from St. Joseph’s College of Nursing and a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Le Moyne College in a four-year period. (To progress into the nursing curriculum for year two of the DDPN, students must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 and a minimum grade of “C” or better in required coursework.) Students enrolled in the DDPN program live on campus at Le Moyne for the full four years of their college experience, enjoying all the social and recreational aspects of living and learning at a traditional four-year liberal arts college, while also benefitting from a rigorous, hands-on nursing curriculum that prepares you for the career of a lifetime.
