College Description
The College of St. Scholastica provides intellectual and moral preparation for responsible living and meaningful work. An independent comprehensive college, it was founded in the Catholic intellectual tradition and is shaped by its Benedictine heritage. The College offers programs in the liberal arts and sciences and professional career fields. The entire St. Scholastica community is committed to an educational process that requires students to meet rigorous academic standards, to broaden the scope of their knowledge, and to be accountable to both self and society.
The College serves 2,518 students. The small, friendly community enables each student to participate in academics, extracurriculars, and recreational activities. A 13:1 student-teacher ratio makes it easy to seek individualized help and encouragement.
St. Scholastica graduates, well known for their academic and professional preparation, enjoy excellent placement opportunities. Last year, 99 percent of graduates either secured employment or enrolled in graduate school within six months of graduation. U.S. News & World Report magazine's 2001 "America's Best Colleges" rankings put St. Scholastica in the top tier of Midwestern colleges for academic excellence and affordability.

The curriculum prepares students for their responsibilities as working professionals, as citizens of a democracy, and as individuals who seek to live full lives. The program consists of three parts: general education requirements, a major, and open electives. The major prepares the student for graduate school or for a profession and is normally selected by the end of the sophomore year. Elective courses allow students to pursue particular interests. The general education component seeks to broaden the student's grasp of the accumulated wisdom of the past so that challenges of the present may be met with wisdom, faith, and imagination. At St. Scholastica, 128 semester credits are required for graduation, of which one third are general education credits. The general education program includes a system of area distribution requirements, a First-Year Program, and an upper-division writing course elective. The area distribution requirements cover cultural diversity, social sciences, world languages, literature, analytical reasoning, natural science, history, fine arts, philosophy, religious studies, and electives. The student's last 32 credits before graduation must be earned at St. Scholastica, and a minimum of 16 credits must be earned in a major field at St. Scholastica. The College offers an honors program for students to have enriched learning experiences and to provide a community of support for learners devoted to a vigorous life of the mind. Some majors require an internship that involves work, travel, or study related to a student's academic efforts.
Campus Life
The St. Scholastica campus is on a ridge overlooking Lake Superior in a residential area of Duluth, Minnesota. The location offers a safe and tranquil setting for scholarship amid exceptional natural beauty. The cultural and commercial offerings of Duluth, a regional center for shopping, the arts, and tourism, are only 10 minutes away. Duluth is in northeastern Minnesota, a 2-hour drive from MinneapolisSt. Paul. It is well served by Northwest and American Airlines as well as commercial bus lines. An intercity bus line provides efficient local transportation.
Duluth's low crime rate, economic stability, and natural beauty regularly earn it high rankings in national quality of life surveys. The city is an international seaport and a center of development for the health, education, and tourism industries. There are more than 15,000 college students in the Duluth-Superior metropolitan area.
The College's proximity to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, national parks, ski areas, lakes, and rivers allows students to enjoy the outdoors in a way few college students can. A student who values a highly cultured community where extracurricular activities abound will be happy at St. Scholastica. Music students take part in the Duluth-Superior Symphony Orchestra, and theater students feel at home at the Duluth Playhouse, one of the nation's oldest community theaters. Sports enthusiasts can play tennis, racquetball, and golf; use ice boats or snowmobiles; or ice-skate, ski, fish, hunt, and sail in St. Scholastica's backyard. Mont du Lac and Spirit Mountain ski areas are only 20 minutes from campus.
Facilities and Resources
St. Scholastica's three-story Romanesque library houses more than 120,000 volumes, with special strengths in the health sciences, nursing, Indian studies, and children's materials. Computer workstations link the library to other state and national libraries, the campus network, and the Internet. Library instruction is provided throughout the curriculum. The Science Center has interactive television classroom capabilities. College research facilities include general and physical chemistry laboratories, health sciences laboratories, anatomy laboratories, and two state-of-the-art 24-hour computer labs.

The Student Association of Immaculata College provides the unity, enthusiasm, and leadership that are representative of the students who choose the College.
Financial Aid
The College of St. Scholastica handles a wide variety of financial aid and attempts to meet the needs of any qualified student enrolled. More than 90 percent of full-time students receive some form of aid; the average award is more than $12,000. The College also offers academic scholarships (Benedictine Scholarships). These awards are made on the basis of academic and leadership excellence, not necessarily because of need.
