Spring Hill College

St. Joseph's Chapel

College Description
Spring Hill College distinguishes itself from other colleges and universities through its personal size, special location, residential setting, successful students, selective enrollment, and Jesuit Catholic heritage. Founded in 1830, Spring Hill is the first Catholic college in the Southeast, the third-oldest Jesuit college in the nation, and the fifth-oldest Catholic college in America.

Spring Hill is recognized as one of the top liberal-arts colleges in the South by U.S. News & World Report. During the past decade, USA Today listed Spring Hill among the country's "choosiest" colleges and Barron's Profiles of American Colleges reported Spring Hill is a "Best Buy in College Education."

Spring Hill's campus occupies 500 acres, including 250 acres of woods and an eighteen-hole golf course and provides recreational resources for students and faculty. Nearby shopping centers supply conveniently located services and the campus is just minutes from downtown Mobile.

Academic Life
Spring Hill College offers the degrees Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science. Majors are offered under the Division of Humanities, Interdivisional Studies, Sciences, Social Sciences, Teacher Education, Communications and Fine Arts, Business and Management, and Nursing (B.S.N.).

Pre-professional programs are offered in dentistry, engineering, law, medicine, and optometry.

A dual-degree program in engineering is offered in cooperation with University of Alabama at Birmingham and Auburn University.

Spring Hill's academic tradition stresses the importance of the liberal arts and sciences and aims to develop student's intellectual capacities for critical thinking, coherent writing and articulate speaking. The College also offers a three-tiered program to assure our students have a comprehensive understanding of computer-accessed information sources. The curriculum is designed to build skills in analysis, synthesis, and judgment, as well as to cultivate the quest for understanding and the desire for truth.

Spring Hill operates on an early-semester calendar. During the summer, two 3-week miniterms and one 6-week session are offered.

Campus Life
More than 50 clubs and organizations are available for student involvement outside of class. Fraternities and sororities, student government, campus ministry, service and social clubs, theater club, student publications, and many other academic and honorary organizations add an important dimension to the Spring Hill experience.

The College's Campus Ministry gives students the opportunity to develop their spiritual lives by offering several community service programs. SHC students get involved by tutoring underprivileged children and providing services for the elderly as well as assisting local charitable organizations. The College has also established a campus chapter for Habitat for Humanity and offers an Urban Immersion program where students can spend two weekends a year in service in downtown Mobile.

Spring Hill students are provided four-year guaranteed housing in campus residence halls and apartments. Ninety percent of our freshman class and seventy-five percent of the total student body live on campus.

Facilities and Resources
The College's campus has thirty-two buildings, with extensive laboratories, studios, and classroom space.

Thomas Byrne Memorial Library houses the main selection of research materials on campus and contains 150,000 volumes that serve the needs of the College community. During orientation freshmen are introduced to the layout, service options and computer information sources available in the library.

Computer equipment available for use by faculty and students includes two Digital Equipment Corporation VAX 3100s, fifty 386- and 486-based PCs, and eighteen Macintosh Quadras, all fully networked and connected to the Internet. A full-time director of academic computing is available to provide assistance and support.

The newest addition to the campus is the $7.5 million Arthur R. Outlaw Student Recreation Center. The center features an indoor olympic-sized pool, racquetball courts, a weight-training center, exercise rooms and student locker rooms.

Spring Hill has six residence halls. Each of these is fully air conditioned and equipped with a coin-operated laundry facility. In addition, every residence hall has several study lounges.

Athletics/Sports
Spring Hill is one of very few colleges nationwide with an eighteen-hole golf course right on campus·and, there are no green fees for Spring Hill students.

In the athletic arena, Spring Hill College is a member of the National Association for Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference (GCAC). The SHC Badgers field intercollegiate men's and women's basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, and tennis teams. In addition, Spring Hill offers women's softball and men's baseball as well as several club and intramural sports.

Financial Aid
More than 82 percent of SHC students qualify for scholarships, loans, or work-study. We will do everything we can to ensure that our innovative, values-centered education is affordable for everyone.

Academic Merit Scholarships are awarded to academically talented and gifted students. Both the Free Application for Federal Student Assistance and the Spring Hill College Application for Scholarship and Financial Assistance are required from all students receiving aid.

The priority date for filing both the FAFSA and the institutional application is March 1st.

Admission Requirements
Spring Hill seeks students who have the desire and ability to benefit from its academic program. Ability must be demonstrated by high school curriculum, grades, standardized test results, rank in class, previous college work (if applicable), and recommendations. For enrolled new freshmen, the ACT Assessment 50th percentile range is 22-26, the corresponding SAT I score range is 1010-1190, and the unweighted GPA range is 3.0-3.4.

In addition to the application form and non-refundable application fee, a student applying for freshman admission must submit an official transcript of high school grades covering at least six semesters, official transcript scores on either the SAT I or ACT Assessment, and an evaluation of achievement and potential from a high school guidance counselor or a high school teacher. In addition to the application form and fee, students applying for transfer admission must submit an official transcript of all college course work completed and a list of courses in progress, an official complete transcript of the high school record and SAT I or ACT scores (if fewer than 20 semester credits have been earned in college), and appropriate notice of good standing at the former college.
