Sports Profile
Each year nearly 200 women achieve athletic, as well as academic, excellence while attending Simmons. Their participation in sports enables them to develop healthy, well-rounded lifestyles and values that translate into success in the classroom and beyond.
Simmons encourages students of many athletic backgrounds and skill levels to participate in intercollegiate and recreational sports. Whether you are a beginner or an All-American high school athlete, if you have the desire to compete and the commitment to be a team member, we have the fields, courts, and staff for you.
Intercollegiate Athletics:
Simmons is a Division III member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC). Located in the heart of Boston, our nine varsity teams compete against colleges both locally and around New England.
Simmons's intercollegiate athletic program has nearly doubled in size since the 1989 opening of the William J. Holmes Sports and Fitness Center, a $10 million state-of-the-art facility. This rapidly expanding program provides our younger athletes with unique opportunities to play more and to step into leadership roles early in their collegiate sports careers. Over the past three years, Simmons's teams have captured conference titles and finished third or higher during regular season and tournament competitions. Individual athletes have received All-American, All-New England, All-Conference, and All-Tournament honors.
Our athletes take rigorous courses, concentrating in a variety of demanding disciplines, such as physical therapy, management, and English. Many manage to balance team practice and their studies with a part-time job to help support the cost of their education. Our coaches know that the key to a thriving athletic program is a commitment to academic success. Study groups and tutors are available for all students at the College's advising and academic support center. In order to participate in sports, athletes must remain in good academic standing with the College. Last year more than 60 percent of our athletes earned a grade point average of 3.0 or better.
If you are looking for an environment that combines academic achievement with athletics in a rewarding college career, you will find this and more at Simmons.
