College Description
Shippensburg University is a comprehensive public university offering bachelors and masters degree programs in three colleges. Shippensburg is big enough where it countswith top-notch faculty and facilitiesand small enough that students are known for themselves and their strengths. Founded in 1871 as the Cumberland Valley State Normal School, Shippensburg is one of 14 universities in the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education. Its primary mission is teaching; at Shippensburg, professors teach classes, not graduate or teaching assistants. Located in south-central Pennsylvania 40 miles southwest of Harrisburg, the campus is situated on 200 rolling acres overlooking the town of Shippensburg. The campus is filled with every conveniencefrom Internet access in residence hall rooms to a 12-acre student recreation center.
Academic Life
Combined, Shippensburgs three collegesArts and Sciences, Business, Education and Human Servicesoffer more than 75 majors and concentrations. About 40 percent of entering students havent decided on a major. They enroll in the Division of Undeclared Majors and benefit from a wide variety of support services. Through the General Education program, Shippensburg helps students gain a range of skills and knowledge: How to communicate orally and in writing; a sound grasp of science and technology; and an appreciation of other cultures. Shippensburg helps students create opportunities for real-life experiences. Academic options include independent study and research with faculty, internships, field experiences, the Marine Science Consortium at Wallops Island, a 3+2 engineering program with two schools of engineering, 3+4 and 3+3 health science programs with professional schools, 2+2 allied health programs, and Army ROTC. The Honors Program offers small classes, excellent teaching, exciting research opportunities, and special extracurricular activities. Study Abroad programs are available for a semester or a year and are ideal for completing General Education, language, and degree requirements.

Campus Life
There are more than 200 student clubs and organizations including musical groups, performing groups, fraternities and sororities, academic and honorary societies, and sports clubs. The Activities Planning Board (APB) is a student group that brings all types of entertainment to the students of Shippensburg. There are movies shown throughout the week and a Friday night Battle of the Bands contest. The APB also sponsors trips to sporting events and cities like Baltimore and New York. The Student Recreation Center on campus includes a street hockey rink, picnic pavilions, and 12 acres of various playing fields. An exercise trail for rollerblading, biking, and jogging surrounds the site. The Student Association, which administers a $2.1 million budget, provides a highly diversified program of student activities. The universitys cultural and lecture series brings nationally and internationally known performers and speakers to campus. Student services include the University Counseling Center, Career Development Center, Learning Center, Womens Center, and Multicultural Student Development Center. The Etter Health Center provides 24-hour access to medical services.
Facilities and Resources
Ezra Lehman Memorial Library houses more than 2 million items and provides access to electronic resources, which are accessible from your personal computer 24-7. (Visit the library online at http://www.ship.edu/~library). The campus computer network has connections in every classroom, faculty office, and residence hall room (one for every student). Every student has an e-mail and a Web homepage account. Students can access their academic and scheduling records online. A wireless network is available in many buildings on campus. There are also 21 microcomputer labs (3 general and 18 with major specific software) located across campus. Two labs are open 24-7.
Shippensburg has nine student housing facilities; all but one are co-ed. Rooms are double occupancy and have two high-speed computer connections. Seavers Complex houses six students in each unit. Stone Ridge Commons offers apartment-style living for two, four, or six students. Student safety is emphasized through trained supervisory personnel and a key-card entry system. Six halls currently have sprinkler systems and all are scheduled to have sprinkler systems installed.
Athletics/Sports
Shippensburg University is a member of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference and NCAA Division II. Shippensburg sponsors 18 intercollegiate sports: mens baseball, basketball, cross-country, football, soccer, swimming, track and field, and wrestling; and womens basketball, cross country, field hockey, lacrosse, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, track/field, and volleyball. All students receive complimentary admission to varsity contests. Club sport programs are offered in 14 sports including mens and womens rugby, cheerleading and ice hockey. Intramural competition is available in 13 sports: including cross country, street hockey, and table tennis.
Heiges Field House is the center for indoor athletic activity. Heiges arena seats 2,750 for varsity and special events. It features a synthetic floor and a 150-meter track. Seth Grove Stadium is home to the varsity track and field and football teams and features a 400-meter synthetic track. Other sports facilities across campus include a nine-court tennis complex, two indoor swimming pools, squash and handball courts, a fitness center, a rehabilitation center, and outdoor sand volleyball courts. A new, lighted outdoor complex offers an artificial turf playing surface and is the home of varsity programs in womens lacrosse and field hockey and womens and mens soccer. The 12-acre Student Recreation Complex includes two picnic pavilions and lighted facilities for street hockey, sand volleyball, basketball, softball, and rollerblading.
Financial Aid
As a member of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education, Shippensburg University can offer a quality education at a surprisingly affordable cost. However, many qualified students still need financial aid in order to attend college. Shippensburg University awards extensive financial aid to students who desire a college education, but cannot pay the full cost. More than 80 percent of undergraduates receive some form of financial aid, including grants, academic or athletic scholarships, loans, and student employment.
Admission Requirements
Shippensburg is selective in its admission standards. Most entering students present SAT or ACT scores above the national average as well as a typical high school college preparatory program. In the admissions decision, Shippensburg considers class rank, grade point average, level of difficulty of the high school curriculum, and standardized test scores. Although the university does not require a specific set or number of high school courses, it recommends these guidelines:
Four years of English
Three years of social sciences
Three years of sequential mathematics
Three years of laboratory science
Two years of one foreign language
Shippensburg admits students on a rolling admission basis. Offers of admission are mailed within about two weeks of receiving a completed application. Students can apply and check the status of their applications online at www.ship.edu. Prospective students must provide: a completed application form, a $30 processing fee, official high school transcript, recommendations, and aptitude test results (SAT or ACT). Transfer students must submit college transcripts. The average applicant has a grade average of B or better and SAT score of 1070, for regularly admitted students. Successful applications display a students leadership ability, special talents and interests and a high school record of college preparatory courses.
