College Description
The University of the Sciences in Philadelphia (USP) was founded in 1821 as the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy, America's first College of Pharmacy. The University is located on a 30-acre campus in the academic section of historic Philadelphia known as University City. USP is a private, undergraduate and graduate institution offering degrees at the Baccalaureate Master, Doctor of Pharmacy and Ph.D. level. The University currently enrolls 1,950 undergraduate students in 15 majors and 206 students in the 9 graduate and Ph.D. programs. Our campus consists of 14 buildings with a major campus expansion and renovation project that began in 1998. Our location in the University City section of Philadelphia offers considerable advantage and appeal, since it not only offers a wide variety of educational opportunities, but is also a culturally, architecturally and socially diverse community that caters to the local college student population. The University of the Sciences in Philadelphia is also actively involved with a number of local community organizations designed to foster improvement, development and unity in the University City community. USP students realize that Philadelphia, and its immediate region, provides unmatched levels of off-campus clinical, scientific and training components as part of their required curriculum. Within a short 20-minute trolley ride to the Center City area, there are the vast cultural, historical and shopping attractions of the fifth largest city in the United States.
Academic Life
The University of the Sciences in Philadelphia includes four colleges: Philadelphia College of Pharmacy offering programs in Pharmacy, Pharmaceutical Marketing and Management, Pharmaceutical Technology, and Pharmacology and Toxicology; Health Sciences offering programs in Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Physician Assistant Studies and Medical Technology; College of Arts and Sciences offering majors in Biochemistry, Biology, Biomedical Writing, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Health Psychology, Microbiology and Pharmaceutical Chemistry; College of Graduate Studies offering programs in Biomedical Writing, Cell Biology and Biotechnology, Medicinal Chemistry and Pharmacognosy, Pharmacology and Toxicology, Pharmaceutics, Pharmacy Administration, Health Policy, and Health Psychology.
Campus Life
Academic Advising and Career counseling are provided for all students through their respective academic department. The University provides an All-Campus account, which allows students to access the bookstore, vending machines, residence hall washing machines, and student government sponsored events without the need to cash or credit cards. Students must first open an account by depositing a pre-set amount of money and then they may draw from this account using their regular university ID card. Check cashing services, a Cashier and Banking with the aid of an ATM is also available to students. The Micro Computer Laboratories serve both for classroom instruction and for use by all other students to support their academic needs including word processing programs, data bases, spreadsheets, statistics programs, graphic programs, instructional tutorials and Internet access. On-campus housing is guaranteed for all students in their first two years. During a student's remaining stay at USP, they may elect to live either on or off campus. Students seeking off-campus housing may obtain a listing of available apartments in the area as well as assistance in finding roommates. Students commuting from outside the University City area will be eligible for reserved parking privileges. Freshmen resident students are not permitted to bring vehicles to campus. University of the Sciences hosts one Academic Honor Fraternity, eight Professional Fraternities one National Service Fraternity one National Social Sorority, and two Social Fraternities. Student government comprises representatives from all undergraduate classes, as well as class officers. It takes an active part in governance by participation in faculty and administrative committees and sponsors a number of campus activities and functions. The University has a multitude of student organizations and clubs, which include, publications, honor societies, professional associations, religious organizations, cultural clubs, concert band, choral groups, volunteer organization, and more. Besides USP, 30,000 total college students, the University of Pennsylvania and Drexel University also call University City home. Within a short 20-minute trolley ride to the Center City area, one will find that there are a vast amount of cultural, historical and shopping attractions.
Facilities and Resources
Classes and laboratory course work are conducted in 7 academic buildings on the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia's campus while the remaining buildings serve as residence halls or support service facilities. USP houses over 80 scientific laboratories and a sufficient number of computer terminals for student use. The Joseph W. England Library contains over 70,000 volumes and 800 periodicals. The England Library provides various electronic means to locate information, including online access to MEDLINE, the world's largest health sciences database, the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), and the Internet. Other databases in the sciences and other areas are available on CD-ROM and through dial-up access. Students may obtain materials not in this library through interlibrary loan.
Athletics/Sports
USP competes at the NAIA Division II level athletically with men's teams in basketball, baseball, cross-country, golf, tennis and rifle. Women's teams are available in basketball, cross-country, golf, softball, tennis, rifle and volleyball. Nearly half of USP students participate in seventeen intramural activities throughout the fall and spring semesters.
Financial Aid
Currently, 90 percent of the undergraduates at USP receive financial assistance, amounting in the aggregate to more than $ 6 million. Types and sources of aid include Federal Perkins Loans; Health Professions Loans; Federal Work-Study; USP scholarships, student employment, and institutional loan funds; deferred tuition payment plans; student loans; and scholarships received from states, municipalities, and service clubs or other organizations. All applicants who seek financial assistance must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). A number of academic scholarships are awarded to first-year students, and the Faculty Scholarship Committee awards a limited number of transfer scholarships each year. All accepted applicants are automatically reviewed for their scholarship eligibility.
Admission Requirements
The University of the Sciences in Philadelphia seeks students whose aptitudes and achievements are in the areas of science, mathematics and humanities. Sixteen total high school credits are required and must include English (4 credits), Mathematics (3 credits that must include Algebra I and II and Plane Geometry), and Science (3 credits of laboratory science that must include at least two of the following: Biology, Chemistry and/or Physics). Class rank is required from those candidates whose high schools calculate class rank. Candidates are required to submit the results of their Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) and/or American College Test (ACT). Physical Therapy and Physician Assistant applicants are required to complete, and have documented, a twenty-(20) hour volunteer/observation experience. Supplemental Testing or an interview may be requested to clarify a specific aspect of a candidate's record. Applications for transfer are welcome though seats are generally limited since USP enrolls students with seats reserved for the entire length of their program.
