Programs
Programs for Post-B.A.s:
Sarah Lawrence College offers a Post-BA program, through the Center for Continuing Education, for college and university graduates who need specific college course work to qualify for graduate school, who want to explore an area of interest in anticipation of entering graduate school, or who simply seek the enrichment of serious study in the liberal arts.
Post-BA students have access to the entire Sarah Lawrence undergraduate and graduate curriculum, and participate fully in the seminar/conference system that is the hallmark of Sarah Lawrences educational philosophy. Resources available to Post-BA students include the distinguished and committed Sarah Lawrence faculty, and the Colleges active and well-organized Career Counseling Center, which uses the solid reputation of the college and its New York-area alumnae/i network to build an impressive array of opportunities for all Sarah Lawrence students.
Post-BAs earn undergraduate credit whether they take courses on campus or in Slonim House, home of the Center for Continuing Education. The entire curriculum of the College is available to them. Some take one course for one semester, others enroll full-time. Questions of pace and course selection are matters for individual students to determine in consultation with their academic advisors.
Post B.A. Pre-Med Program:
Sarah Lawrence enjoys an excellent record of medical school placements. The College's Post-BA program offers undergraduate credits in the science and math courses required for medical school admission. Post-BA pre-meds benefit from Sarah Lawrence's small lecture and lab classes, individual conferences and the attention of a skilled science and math faculty. The College's new Science Center provides students with fully equipped work and study space.
The pre-med advisor at Sarah Lawrence plans programming and activities for pre-meds related to the medical school admission process and studentsÕ career goals. She is available for individual consultation and donning, and oversees preparation of student medical school recommendation letters, coordinating faculty and institutional support for each student. The staff of the Career Counseling Center helps students find fieldwork and internship opportunities and provides assistance in identifying appropriate medical schools for application.
Non-Credit Programs
We offer two non-credit programs for adults: the Sarah Lawrence Writing Institute and the October College. Both programs feature small classes, individual attention and lively interchange. Participants also enjoy the services of the College's library, access to campus lectures, special events, food services and convenient free parking.
The Writing Institute offers adults the opportunity to improve their writing skills and to be a part of a community of writers. The 11-week workshops meet weekly for two hours and are scheduled in both the daytime and evening. Every Writing Institute term includes workshops in poetry, fiction and memoir writing. Other frequently scheduled workshops include magazine feature writing, playwriting and screenwriting.
Fall Semester: September 20-December 15
The October College program opens the Sarah Lawrence campus to adults through an offering of non-credit seminars in the liberal arts. The seminars meet once each week during the month of October. The two-hour seminars, conducted by senior members of the College's distinguished teaching faculty, are characterized by lively and challenging discussions, and augmented by weekly reading assignments.
The seminars are offered from October 1 through November 1.
Applying / Application
Application to enroll in the Bachelor of Arts Program for Adults begins with a personal interview to discuss your objectives in returning to school. We use that time to help you plan to meet the challenges you will face, and talk about the resources available to help you succeed. We can discuss financing as well, and answer questions that will help you decide whether Sarah Lawrence offers what you seek as you pursue your higher education.
The written application for the Bachelor of Arts Program for Adults includes three essay questions, which are designed both to help us get to know you and to help you begin to define your goals and interests in higher education. No SAT results are required to apply to the Center.
Costs and Financial Aid
Each semester-long class at Sarah Lawrence earns five credits, and students at the Center pay the same per-credit rate as do undergraduates, with one exception: Adult BA students enrolled in their first class receive a tuition discount of 25 percent. The current tuition rate is $4,555; the reduced rate is $3,416.25. All students also pay a General College Fee of $163 per semester, and an annual parking fee of $125. The application fee for admission to the BA Program for Adults and the Post-BA Programs is $45.
Generous alumnae/i and friends of the College enable us to offer scholarships to students who demonstrate need. The CollegeÕs financial aid program also helps students obtain grants and loans to pay school-related expenses that are not covered by scholarship funds.
