Overview
Founded in 1923, Rowan University has become
a regional center for education, business, technology, and the arts and
humanities. With state-of-the-art facilities, nationally ranked academic
and athletic programs, and talented professors, Rowan offers an outstanding
educational experience at an exceptional value. Currently, the University
is the home of nearly 10,000 students in forty-two majors, twenty-six
minors, and twenty-eight graduate programs across six academic colleges—Business,
Communication, Education, Engineering, Fine and Performing Arts, and Liberal
Arts and Sciences—and the College of Professional & Continuing
Education. Rowan’s admission standards are competitive, attracting
applicants from the top quarter of their high school classes. All courses
are taught by professors without the aid of teaching assistants, and the
average class size is 20.
Rowan University, established for teacher training
and later known as Glassboro State College, made philanthropic history
with the 1992 Rowan $100 million donation.
Location
and Community
The University is located on 200 acres in the historic southern New Jersey
town of Glassboro, less than 30 minutes from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania,
less than an hour from the New Jersey shore. Because of the University’s
location halfway between New York and Washington, D.C., it was chosen
as the site of the historic 1967 conference between President Johnson
and Soviet Premier Kosygin. Facilities for all forms of surface and air
transportation, including Philadelphia International Airport, are within
minutes of the campus.
Just 20 minutes from the main campus, the Rowan University Camden Campus, in Camden, New Jersey, serves the urban community with an emphasis on nontraditional students in three degree programs, plus English as a second language studies.
Academic
Life
All degree programs include a general education requirement (approximately
60 semester hours) from the areas of communication, science and mathematics,
social and behavioral sciences, humanities and languages, and fine arts.
In addition, most academic majors have specific general education courses
that students in that major must take. Each degree program includes individual
major requirements and free electives. A minimum of thirty semester hours
is required in a major program; many departments require more

Internships are available in all majors, and some type of internship or academic field experiences are required in most of them.
The University calendar is based on the two-semester system with a summer session.

The Bachelor of Arts degree is offered in accounting,
advertising, art (general fine arts), communication studies, early childhood
education, economics, education (K—12 subject matter in art, biology,
chemistry, English, history, mathematics, music, physical science, physics,
Spanish, theater/speech/dramatic arts), elementary education, English,
environmental studies, geography, health and exercise science (athletic
training, health promotion and fitness management, K—12 teacher
certification), history, journalism, law and justice studies, liberal
studies: American studies, liberal studies: math/science, mathematics,
music, political science, psychology, public relations, radio/TV/film,
sociology, Spanish, theater (theater, child drama), and writing arts.
The Bachelor of Science degree is offered in accounting, biochemistry,
biological sciences, business (entrepreneurship, finance, human resource
management, management, management information systems, marketing), chemistry,
computer science, engineering (chemical, civil and environmental, electrical
and computer, mechanical), mathematics, physical sciences, and physics.
The Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree is also offered. The Bachelor
of Fine Arts degree is offered in studio arts (drawing and painting, ceramics,
computer art, graphic design, illustration, jewelry/metalry, photography,
printmaking, puppetry, and sculpture). The Bachelor of Music degree is
offered in composition, jazz studies, music education, and performance.
Facilities
and Resources
In just the past decade, Rowan has added a number of new buildings that
are notable for their modern architecture, bright open spaces, and state-of-the-art
equipment. They include the Student Recreation Center, a full-service
health club for students, faculty members, and alumni; the Campbell Library,
which combines spacious new study areas with a rich collection of print
and electronic resources for research; and Henry M. Rowan Hall, a $28-million
engineering building with a technology spine and modular classrooms and
laboratories. The $45-million, state-of-the-art Science Hall, which opened
in fall 2003, is the home of the biological sciences, chemistry, and physics
departments and features a fully equipped laser laboratory, a rooftop
greenhouse and telescope, a planetarium, twenty-two research laboratories,
and twenty-seven teaching laboratories. Education Hall, the new home for
the College of Education, featuring state-of-the-art technology, learning
centers, classrooms, and office space, opened in spring 2006. Rowan is
also expanding its campus to accommodate the building of the South Jersey
Technology Park, a facility that will be shared by students, faculty members,
and private industry.

Life
Rowan’s tree-lined campus features student residence halls, apartments
and townhouses; a brand-new $28.5 million education hall; a new $45 million
science center; a $28 million engineering building; a $16.7 million library;
an $8.6 million Student Recreation Center; theatres; galleries; and thirty-three
student computer labs.
Sports
/ Varsity Athletics
Rowan’s eighteen varsity athletic teams
compete in NCAA Division III, the New Jersey Athletic Conference, and
the Eastern College Athletic Conference. More than 150 clubs, preprofessional
organizations, honor societies, and fraternities and sororities foster
a sense of community life.
Financial
Aid / Scholarships
Nearly 70 percent of all Rowan students receive some form of financial
aid, such as grants, loans, or scholarships, from federal and state sources,
alumni, friends of the University, and various other organizations. In
2006, Rowan awarded $68 million in total financial assistance to undergraduates.
Students should submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
as soon as possible after January 1 and no later than March 15 to be evaluated
for the earliest consideration.

Application
Rowan University carefully considers each application
it receives and selects candidates who will be academically successful,
contribute to student life on campus, and benefit most from the Rowan
experience. Rowan’s admissions standards are competitive. The 2006
freshman class posted a mean SAT score of 1165, a top-20 percent class
rank, and an average GPA of 3.6. The average transfer student GPA is 3.07.
Admission decisions are based on the strength and quality of the high school record, SAT or ACT scores, class rank, and letters of recommendation. An essay or interview is not required.
Applicants are expected to have completed a minimum of 16 college preparatory units: 4 of English, 2 of laboratory science, 3 of college preparatory mathematics (algebra I and II, geometry), 2 of social studies, and 5 of additional work in at least two of the following areas: English, social studies, languages, mathematics, or sciences. The College of Engineering seeks applicants with 3 units of laboratory science, including chemistry and physics, and 4 units of college preparatory mathematics, including precalculus (calculus preferred).
Admission for transfer students is competitive and is based on college transcripts and available space in the desired major.
