Multicultural Profile

Randolph-Macon Woman's College, committed to excellence in the education of women since its founding in 1891, enrolls 721 students from 45 states, the District of Columbia, and foreign countries. Fourteen percent are minority students. The college acknowledges that each woman brings a unique ethnic, cultural, and personal identity with her when she enters our College. By creating an atmosphere of academic challenge and fulfillment, joined with a heightened awareness of the beauty and strength found in diversity, we prepare women for their futures.

The directors of Multicultural Education and International Programs offer training and workshops for student groups as well as comprehensive support services. A Mentoring Program matches incoming African-American students with current African-American students to ease their transition into the R-MWC community. A Friendship Family Program encourages friendship and cross-cultural understanding between international students and families in Lynchburg. The Macon Intercultural Exchange Housing Program (MIX) gives students the opportunity to live with a roommate from another country to enhance cross-cultural understanding. A series of Monday night seminars and off-campus social and educational outings further support the MIX program.

The Multicultural Committee, established by Student Government to promote cultural awareness and understanding, provides a bridge between various groups within the R-MWC community, and promotes educational and social activities. Student-led collaboration with the College's Dean of Students Office, also support and enhance diversity within the campus community. Special annual events organized by these groups attract visitors from the local and regional communities and nearby colleges. Black History Month and Pan World Coffeehouse are two of the popular events coordinated by students. A variety of guest speakers, visiting artists and writers, and visiting international scholar provide additional opportunities to experience other perspectives and cultures. The Black Alumnae Network Committee (BANC) holds a reunion every February to meet with current R-MWC students and serve as mentors.
