IN ADDITION
Luc Montagnier, one of the world's great medical researchers and co-discoverer of the AIDS virus, will be joining the College's faculty in the fall of 1997. He will hold an endowed chair and head the new Salick Family Center for Molecular and Cellular Biology, where he will continue his search for a cure for AIDS.

College Description
Queens College is dedicated to the idea that a great education should be accessible to talented young people of all backgrounds ethnic and financial. The College's colorful kaleidoscope of tongues, talents, and cultures 67 different native languages are spoken here provides an extraordinary educational environment. A strong liberal arts curriculum assures students education for a full career and a full life. Opportunities abound with special programs developed for honors students; students in pre-law, pre-med, journalism, and business; and foreign language speakers. Queens College, which is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year, is listed as being among the top eight percent of all U.S. colleges in the Princeton Review Guide, and is cited by The New York Times Selective Guide to Colleges as the strongest college in the City University of New York. The College's 76-acre, tree-lined campus offers students a relaxing atmosphere, while being only minutes away from the cultural riches of Manhattan.
Academic Life
Queens College offers day and evening classes in its three divisions Arts and Humanities, Mathematics and Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences and two schools the Aaron Copland School of Music and the School of Education. Students may receive bachelor of art and bachelor of science degrees in over 50 programs, as well as bachelor of fine arts and bachelor of music degrees and combined B.A.-M.A. degrees in chemistry and biochemistry, computer science, music, philosophy, physics, and political science. The faculty consists of world-class scholars who care deeply about teaching and often involve students in their research projects. High achieving students can enroll in the Honors Studies Program, which includes General Honors, Honors in the Western Tradition, and Honors in Mathematics and the Natural Sciences. Our award-winning Freshman Year Initiative, an academic program open to incoming freshmen, eases students' transition from high school to college life. Students may also spend a year studying abroad in Europe. Queens College is accredited by the Commission on Higher Education: Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.
Campus Life
Queens College is a commuter college that offers students an exceptional campus life. The Student Union contains social, cultural, recreational, and educational facilities and services. Over 45 student organizations have office space here and another 90 use the Union for meetings, events, and seminars, including the QC Campus Ministers, an association of the Hillel Center for Jewish Life, Protestant, Catholic, and Greek Orthodox ministries. Food service options at the Union include hot and cold entrees and pizza, as well as a Subway Sandwich Shop, Taco Bell Express, and TCBY. The Bookstore sells all course books, bestsellers, art supplies, College apparel, and other items. There are separate student governments for day and evening students. The Academic Senate, which includes 30 elected students, governs the College and determines many of its policies. Numerous honor societies are also on campus, including Phi Beta Kappa, Sigma Xi, Alpha Sigma Lambda, Kappa Delta Pi, and the Golden Key National Honor Society.
Facilities and Resources
Queens College's microcomputer labs provide more than 500 IBM, IBM-compatible, and Apple Macintosh microcomputers for classroom and open lab use. Students have access to laser printers, text and graphics scanners, plotters, and CD-ROM readers, as well as a wide range of software. The Learning Center has interactive audio facilities and one of the nation's most advanced computer classrooms. Science labs house up-to-date scientific instruments for research in biology, chemistry, nutrition, exercise sciences, geology, physics, and psychology. The Library maintains 683,000 books, 2,500 periodicals, and pamphlet files, as well as special collections in art, education, and music. Colden Center for the Performing Arts, with its 2,143-seat auditorium and 476-seat Goldstein Theatre, presents major artists from the world of music, dance, and theatre. The new Music Building includes the 490-seat LeFrak Concert Hall with tracker organ, electronic music studios, and professional recording studio. The Godwin-Ternbach Museum is a teaching museum with a permanent collection of 2,500 works of art in all media. The Speech-Language-Hearing Center offers diagnostic evaluations and therapy. Its facilities provide clinical practice experience for students who wish to become speech-language pathologists and audiologists.
Athletics/Sports
Our intercollegiate athletic program provides students with an opportunity to participate on a high level of competition. In 1997 our water polo team won the CWPA North Division Championship. The intercollegiate program competes on the varsity level for men and women Men in baseball, basketball, cross country, lacrosse, swimming, tennis, track (indoor and outdoor), volleyball, and water polo, and women in basketball, cross country, softball, swimming, tennis, track (indoor and outdoor), volleyball, and water polo. The recreation program offers basketball, swimming, weight lifting, running, volleyball, softball, tennis, and many other activities. The intramural program has many of the activities listed above, plus three-on-three basketball, volleyball tournaments, and a Turkey Run. FitzGerald Gymnasium houses a large main gym and auxiliary gym, individual sports areas, an Olympic-size pool, and dance studios. Outdoor facilities include 18 composition tennis courts, a quarter-mile track, and ball fields.
Financial Aid
The Financial Aid Office coordinates the distribution of all need-based federal and state financial aid programs available at Queens College. Almost half the student body receives some form of financial aid. To apply for aid, students file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Queens College Scholars offers merit-based scholarships to freshmen and transfers. Last year over 90 scholarships were awarded, ranging from $2,000 to $5,000. Selection is competitive and most awards are renewable. Freshman applicants who rank in or near the top 10% of their class with a strong academic program, excellent grades, and SAT scores of 1250r should apply by February 15. Transfer scholarships for $2,000 per year are also available; the application deadline is June 1. Queens College Scholars applications are available in the Undergraduate Admissions Office.
Admission Requirements
Queens College seeks to admit freshmen who have completed a strong academic program in high school with a high B average. Admission is based on a variety of factors, including high school grades, the academic program, and available test scores. Successful candidates will have chosen a well-rounded program of study that includes academic coursework in math (3 years) and a foreign language (3 years). Although not required for admission, the SAT is strongly recommended, and a minimum score of 1050 will be an important factor for those who do not meet the above profile. For earliest consideration, apply by January 15 for fall admission. ð SEEK (Search for Education, Elevation & Knowledge) is an opportunity program with special admissions criteria. Motivated students who would not otherwise qualify for admission will receive academic support, counseling, and financial assistance. Applicants are admitted for the fall semester only, and a pre-freshman summer program may be required for some students. Apply by January 15 for earliest consideration. ð Transfers: Queens College accepts students who have earned credits from other colleges and universities. Admission is determined by the strength of the previous college record, and in some cases both the high school and college records are considered. Credit evaluation will take place after admission. For earliest consideration, apply by March 15 for fall admission and by October 15 for spring admission.
