Potomac State College Of West Virginia University
The Potomac State College campus

College Description
Since 1901, Potomac State College has provided a setting for serious academic thought and reflection in an environment that fosters individual growth, a dedicated faculty, personalized attention, and an opportunity for self-direction. As the only two-year residential branch of West Virginia University, Potomac State College offers the advantages of attending a major university on a small college campus. With an enrollment of approximately 1,100 students, Potomac State College is a public, coeducational, junior college that attracts students from West Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Ohio, New Jersey, and the Washington, DC area.

Situated in West Virginia's eastern panhandle, the 16-acre campus is ideally located for the enjoyment of the state's proud mountain heritage. Located in Keyser, West Virginia, a quiet community of about 8,000 residents, Potomac State College's campus is within leisurely walking distance of local shopping and community facilities.

The college has maintained full and continuous accreditation as an associate degree-granting institution since first accredited by the North Central Association in 1926. Potomac State's accreditation was recently extended for ten years, the maximum allowable time period between accreditation visits.

Academic Life
The faculty at Potomac State is primarily a teaching faculty, geared toward fostering a positive relationship with students. The breadth of educational offerings at Potomac State College can best be seen in the diversity of its majors. Potomac State offers forty-eight options leading to an Associate in Arts (A.A.) degree. Ten career/technical programs are offered leading to an Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree, and one option leading to a Certificate.

An Honors Program is available for academically qualified students and is fully integrated with West Virginia University's Honors Program. Participation can be continued upon transfer to the Morgantown Campus.

Applicants may gain college credit for their educationally related life experiences through the College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) of the CEEB and the Advanced Placement Program.

The College's Student Support Services is a federal TRIO program that is designed to help low-income, first-generation, or disabled students succeed at the college level. A professional staff provides an array of support services including tutoring, counseling, advising, transfer information, and disability services.

The College's academic calendar is based on two 15 week semesters and two 5-week summer terms.

Campus Life
Four residence halls are available. Each residence hall is served by a full-time resident director and student resident assistants. Each facility comfortably houses two to a room and is within easy walking distance of the library, academic buildings, and dining facilities. Residence halls are air-conditioned, have cable television, and each room is equipped with private telephones. The student union is adjacent to the college residence halls.

Students are encouraged to become involved in The Sigma Phi Omega honor society, student government organizations, theatrical productions, musical groups, the college newspaper-PASQUINO-and other student centered activities.

Facilities and Resources
In the Mary F. Shipper Library, students may research a report or simply browse through the 45,000 volume, open-stack library. Potomac State also has a Learning Resource Center that utilizes the latest in media technology and houses a 24,000 piece collection of non-print materials to assist students in their studies. CD-ROM and on-line databases are available. Students have access to interlibrary loans from all over the country.
