Point
Park University
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Overview
Point Park University, founded in 1960, has
undergone vigorous growth in the last decade. It is accredited by the
Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. Enrollment has grown
to 3,500, and the number of majors available totals more than fifty, including
a Master of Arts in educational administration, Master of Arts degree
programs in journalism and mass communications, a Master of Arts in curriculum
and instruction, a Master of Science in criminal justice, a Master of
Science in engineering management, an accelerated M.B.A., and an M.F.A.
in theater arts.
Characterized by a willingness to innovate, the University, since its
inception, has actively established internship possibilities with the
many resources for career preparation in Pittsburgh. In addition to those
in the performing arts, internship opportunities can be found in local
broadcasting stations, area hospitals, and the government and with such
corporate giants as USX and PPG Industries. The University’s numerous
activities are designed to meet the needs of a diversified student body,
representing forty-two states and thirty-nine countries.
Location
and Community
Metropolitan Pittsburgh has a population of more than 2 million. In the
Golden Triangle, gleaming office towers loom high above landscaped plazas,
fountains, and a 36-acre park fronting on Pittsburgh’s three rivers.
More than 100 major corporations have their headquarters in the city,
making it the fifth-largest corporate center in the nation. Through its
prominence as a corporate hub, a home for high-tech industries, and a
major production center for steel, the city provides a vast array of career
opportunities, as well as a distinctive population mix. Pittsburgh continues
to be named one of the most livable cities in the United States in the
Rand McNally Places Rated Almanac.
Through the philanthropic efforts of such financial entrepreneurs as
Carnegie and Frick, Pittsburgh has enjoyed a long tradition as a cultural
center. The city has an excellent symphony and ballet, and the Pittsburgh
Opera gives performances regularly. Theaters, ethnic festivals, and club
attractions fill out the entertainment spectrum. In addition, the nation’s
first educational television station, WQED, provides a wealth of stimulating
offerings. PNC Park, Heinz Field, and Mellon Arena are homes of Pittsburgh’s
professional sports teams and also host concerts and other special events;
all are within walking distance of the University. Also within walking
distance of the campus is the downtown YMCA, where a nominal fee entitles
students to the use of extensive and varied facilities the year round.
A short bus ride away is the Oakland section of Pittsburgh, the location
of several renowned museums.
Academic
Life
Point Park is an innovative institution. Its philosophy is one of meeting
and adapting to individual requirements within the framework of a sound
humanistic education. This commitment is reflected in programs that, while
providing for the expansion of mind and spirit that the liberal arts alone
can give, places strong emphasis on developing career skills. Thus, all
degree programs, with the exception of the B.F.A. programs, include a
core curriculum requirement of 42 credit hours. The core curriculum includes
choices in the humanities as well as in the social, behavioral, and natural
sciences. Aside from completing the prerequisites for major offerings,
students may elect to fulfill their core requirements on a schedule of
their own choosing. At the same time, the student’s introduction
to specific career preparation can begin in the first semester. Indeed,
this is typical for students majoring in computer science, dance, engineering
technology, film production, journalism and communications, and theater
arts. In order to encourage student experimentation, the University permits
eight courses from the core curriculum to be taken under a pass/fail option.
With the approval of their guidance offices, high school students may
take courses at Point Park for full college credit. The University grants
advanced standing on the basis of the College Board’s Advanced Placement
tests, the CLEP examinations, and educational experiences in the armed
forces. In addition, the University has long-standing experience in meeting
the needs of transfer students.
The academic calendar consists of two semesters and a summer schedule
offering two 6-week sessions and one 12-week session. This year-round
utilization of facilities, combined with the University’s extensive
evening and Saturday programs, provides students with maximum flexibility
in planning their schedules.

in May 1997. The University Center houses Point Park University’s
television studio and cinema and digital arts labs. The Point Park University
Library supports the University’s curriculum through its print,
multimedia, and electronic collections. Students have access to the library’s
online resources from on and off campus. The library has computers for

lab. A science and journalism laboratory complex, an on-campus radio station,
a student-run newspaper and magazine, an on-campus laboratory school,
on-campus dance studios, numerous computer terminal rooms, a CADD lab,
a new biotechnology lab, and other facilities and programs contribute
to the University’s philosophy of carefully balancing theory with
practical experience. The University’s location in the heart of
Pittsburgh’s business district opens numerous opportunities for
practical learning. Point Park owns and operates the Pittsburgh Playhouse
of Point Park University, which presents more than twenty dance and theater
performances per year.

Park University Singers, and the United Student Government are a few of
the organizations that students may join.

Financial
Aid / Scholarships
Point Park makes a sincere effort to ensure that each student who desires
to attend is able to do so. Accordingly, the University administers a
generous program of financial aid, including Federal Work-Study awards
and Point Park, Federal Pell, and Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity
grants. The University administers loans under the Federal Perkins Loan
Program and the Federal Stafford Student Loan Program. Academic, talent,
and athletic scholarships are also available for all students, including
transfer students.
Applicants for financial aid must demonstrate financial need and show
evidence of academic promise or achievement. To apply, students must submit
a completed University application form. All students must submit applications
for federal, state, and Point Park financial aid through the Pennsylvania
Higher Education Assistance Agency (PHEAA).
Admission
Requirements / Application
Point Park University is very much concerned
with the needs and interests of its students. This concern is extended
not only to matriculated students but also to prospective students. For
this reason, the admissions staff pursues a policy that is individualized,
personal, and humanistic. Each student is viewed in terms of his or her
own personal and academic potential. Recommendations from guidance counselors
and teachers and an interview, while not required, are considered, along
with motivational factors and relative maturity, in conjunction with the
traditional objective criteria, such as class rank, high school record,
and standardized test scores. All candidates are required to take either
the SAT or the ACT.
