New York Institute of Technology
Old Westbury Campus, P.O. Box 8000
Old Westbury, New York 11568

NYIT students enjoy excellent facilities on all three campuses.
College Description
New York Institute of Technology is a private coeducational institution of higher learning. Founded in 1955, the college now enrolls 10,000 students at its three campuses. NYIT is fully accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. Specific program accreditations include: Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, National Architectural Accrediting Board, Foundation for Interior Design Education Research, National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Science, American Dietetic Association for Preprofessional Program, American Culinary Federation Educational Institute, and American Osteopathic Association. NYIT offers undergraduate and graduate career-oriented programs leading to the associate, bachelor's, master's, and Doctor of Osteopathy degrees.
Academic Life
NYIT offers over 60 undergraduate majors and 12 graduate degrees that are divided into its six schools: Architecture and Design; Arts, Science and Communication; Allied Heath and Life Sciences; Education and Professional Services; Engineering and Technology; and Management. Known for its hands-on instructional programs, NYIT affords students the opportunity to gain work experience through their coursework. Architecture majors create community rehabilitation designs as part of their senior thesis, students in accounting perform tax preparation as a community service, students in advertising run ad agencies, while our culinary students run NYIT's two culinary arts restaurants. NYIT's career-oriented programs are designed to prepare our graduates for the workplace. Technology is infused into every program at NYIT. Each curriculum is designed to offer specific technological skills essential to the student's career.
Campus Life
NYIT's three campuses offer a wonderful diversity of experiences, but the one common thread among all three is a strong sense of community. Student Government Associations exist on all campuses, and are the driving force behind campus life. The SGA, along with the dozens of student clubs and organizations, provide ongoing social and educational programs and activities. The Islip and Old Westbury campuses both have strong Greek life programs, with over two dozen active fraternities and sororities. All NYIT campuses have open-access computer labs, providing students the opportunity to type papers and access the Internet. Finally, the Islip campus provides the only college-sponsored housing at NYIT, offering eight residence halls with accommodations ranging from traditional single, double, and triple rooms to apartments and suites. The college-sponsored housing at Islip serves as occupancy housing for both the Islip and Old Westbury campuses. The college provides free shuttle transportation between the two Long Island campuses.
Facilities and Resources
NYIT's three campuses provide every student with state-of-the-art computer, laser, medical, art, advertising, architectural, photography, engineering, chemistry, physics, forensic, graphic, television, radio, film, culinary, and teleconferencing laboratories. NYIT's Internet services and On-Line Campus provide every student with an essential connection to classwork, the library holdings, electronic libraries and databases, e-mail, and the research benefits of the World Wide Web. The college's computer facilities include 43 computer labs with over 430 IBM/IBM-compatible and Apple Macintosh microcomputers. NYIT's library resources include five libraries with 204,803 volumes, 3,346 periodicals, 626,117 microforms, and 47,732 audiovisuals. NYIT's nine inter-campus fiber optic rooms serve over 4,000 students per year. Each room is equipped with ISDN, with over 30 lines connecting NYIT to worldwide video conferencing. In addition to NYIT's academic facilities, its student activity facilities include two radio stations, four fitness and training rooms, five cafeterias, three student activities centers, multiple athletic and recreational fields, two gymnasiums, and eight residential halls.
Athletics/Sports
NYIT offers a competitive intercollegiate athletic program organized for men and women. Men's varsity teams compete in baseball, basketball, lacrosse, soccer, indoor and outdoor track and field, and cross-country. Women's varsity teams include intercollegiate basketball, softball, volleyball, soccer, indoor and outdoor track and field, and cross-country. NYIT's varsity teams compete with colleges throughout New York and in neighboring eastern states under the auspices of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC), and the New York Collegiate Athletic Conference (NYC). Baseball is an NCAA Division I sport (Mid-Continent Conference), and all other varsity teams compete in Division II.
Financial Aid
NYIT offers a variety of scholarship financial assistance to qualified and deserving students who might otherwise be unable to afford the educational opportunities offered by the college. Financial assistance programs draw from college funds and state and federal funds through scholarship, grants-in-aid, loans, and employment. Awards are designed to recognize scholastic achievement, financial need, character and promise of the applicant, competence in a particular field, or distinctive contributions to the college or the community. NYIT also guarantees $1,500 in gift aid to any freshman student who files the Free Application for Financial Aid (FAFSA).
Admission Requirements
Admission to NYIT is based on educational preparation and personal abilities necessary for academic success. All students must present evidence of completion of a high school degree or an equivalent. All freshman applicants are required to submit SAT I or ACT scores for admission review. Additional requirements may include standardized tests, portfolios, interviews, essays, letters of recommendation, volunteer hours, and regents units on their diplomas. International students are required to submit TOEFL scores for admission.
