Norwich University is a unique kind of college. We have two very diversified student populations. You can choose to be a part of our discipline lifestyle, as a member of our corps of cadets, or you can choose the traditional civilian experience. Whichever lifestyle you select, Norwich offers innovative programs, the personal attention of small classes, dedicated experienced faculty, and the resources and diversity of a major university. Our campus has the history of being the oldest private military college in the nation, the birthplace of ROTC and one of the first coeducational military colleges. The corps of cadets, which is made up of nearly 1,000 students, follows a disciplined military lifestyle that teaches cadets leadership and responsibility. Cadets wear a military uniform, live under a code, and advance in rank according to their ability to lead and accept responsibility. Norwich offers Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marine ROTC programs. In addition, Norwich offers the nation's first peace corps preparatory program. The civilian population adds roughly 500 students to the Norwich community. Of these students 400 are residents, living on campus, and the remainder are commuting students. Both student groups actively partake in academics and athletics. We give our students the kind of attention they need to succeed with an average of one faculty member for ever 14 students. Our more than 25 majors include the most sought after professional programs, such as architecture, engineering, nursing, criminal justice and sports medicine. This fall we will have students from 13 foreign countries, about eight percent of our students are minority including Hispanic, African-American, and American Indian. In the corps of cadets we have eleven percent female and there are nearly 40 percent female in our civilian population. Students definitely participate at Norwich, with 45 students organizations and clubs offering activities from chess to drama. Athletics are an important part of life at Norwich; the University offers 18 varsity sport and a host of intramural sports. Facilities are comparable to those of much larger schools and include two complete gymnasiums, racquetball courts, weight rooms, aerobic exercise room, wrestling facility, indoor swimming pool, indoor rifle range, several playing fields for football, lacrosse, soccer, rugby and baseball, and an indoor fieldhouse that includes tennis courts, track and climbing wall. Admission is based on evaluation of the student's academic background, recommendations from teachers and counselors, extracurricular and community activities, and leadership potential. We also require students to submit SAT or ACT test scores. |
