College Description
Niagara University (NU), founded in 1856, is a private, independent university rooted in a Catholic and Vincentian tradition. The suburban 160-acre campus combines the old and new; both ivy- covered buildings and modern architectural structures are among its twenty-seven buildings. The University is easily accessible from every major city in the eastern and midwestern United States via the New York State Thruway, Buffalo International Airport, and rail and bus service. There are more than 2,200 undergraduate and 644 graduate students enrolled at Niagara. Of the total enrollment, approximately 58 percent live on campus. Special student services include the Health Center, which provides inpatient and outpatient care during the day; the Learning Center, which provides free tutoring services; and the Career Development Office, which offers professional and career counseling. Niagara University is situated on Monteagle Ridge overlooking the gorge of the Niagara River, which connects the two Great Lakes of Erie and Ontario. Niagara's suburban campus setting is just 4 miles from the world-famous Niagara Falls. Millions of visitors view the scenic majesty of the falls every year. NU is located 30 minutes from Buffalo, New York State's second largest city which offers a variety of cultural events, sports, and entertainment opportunities. Toronto, Canada's largest metropolitan area, is just 90 minutes north of Niagara's campus and offers an even wider variety of experiences for NU students.
Academic Life
Through various innovative programs and courses, such as the cooperative education programs and the small business institute, students have the opportunity to gain valuable work-related experience. Under personal advisement, students receive support services that assist them in discovering interests, developing future plans, planning their education, and choosing an academic major. Niagara University's curricula enable students to pursue their academic preferences and to complete courses that lead to proficiency in other academic areas. The honors program provides special academic opportunities that stimulate, encourage, and challenge participants. Niagara grants credit for successful scores on the Advanced Placement tests, College-Level Examination Program tests, and College Proficiency Examinations. Internships, research, independent study, and cooperative education are available in many academic programs. An Army ROTC program is also offered. The University operates on a two-semester plan (fall and spring). A comprehensive summer session offers a diversity of courses. Niagara is also affiliated with Western New York Consortium. Through this program students may take courses at other colleges and universities and apply the credits to NU graduation requirements. Niagara University has a dedicated, accessible faculty members who genuinely care about the academic and personal growth of their students. Their commitment to teaching is their primary concern. A student-faculty ratio of 16:1 and an average class size of 22 allow personal attention and classroom interaction.
Campus Life
Niagara University's beautiful suburban campus has one of the most dynamic locations of any campus in the world. It is just minutes away from scenic Niagara Falls and the Canadien border, and a short drive from the major metropolitan areas of Toronto and Buffalo. NU's 160-acre campus is the best of both worlds. It is large enough to house virtually all of the activities anyone would want; yet, it's small enough to be intimate and friendly-where students, faculty, and administration know and say "hello" to each other. There are five co-ed and sigle-gender residence halls and a grouping of residence cottages where students can live. On-site residence staff often provide creative social and educational programs to help new students acclimate to NU's safe, energetic, and friendly, campus community. Student rooms are equipped with comfortable furniture and state-of-the-art telephone, cable television, and computer access. Many buildings, such as the ivy-covered residence halls and the chapel with its stained glass windows, reflect the historical charm of NU's 142-year history, while other new buildings are modern and exemplify NU's excitement and energy...buildings such as the Castellani Art Museum, Ice Complex, Bailo Hall, and Kiernan Center.
