Midwestern State University campus
College Description
MSU is a growing university with an active student body, a teaching oriented faculty, strong academic programs and beautiful facilities. Students come to Midwestern State from near and far. With a total enrollment of nearly 6,000, we serve students from Wichita Falls and the surrounding area, from the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex and from other parts of Texas. A new reciprocal agreement also makes MSU a very affordable option for students from Oklahoma, while the reputation of particular programs brings students from other states and other countries. About 90 percent of our students are undergraduates. Midwestern State University is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award associate, baccalaureate and master's degrees. Our picture-perfect campus, located in a residential section of Wichita Falls, Texas, features outstanding facilities to support your education.
Academic Life
A number of our academic programs have achieved regional and national prominence. You will have an exciting range of options from which to choose. Midwestern State offers both fall and spring semesters with two summer sessions and trimester terms as options of attendance. There are nine academic divisions on the MSU campus. They include the divisions of Education, Fine Arts, Health Sciences, Humanities, Mathematical Sciences, Political Science and Public Administration, Sciences and Social and Behavioral Sciences. Pre-professional programs are available in dentistry, engineering, law, medicine, veterinary medicine, pharmacy and physical therapy. Professional training is provided in accounting, business administration, computer science, criminal justice, elementary and secondary education, health sciences, psychology, sociology, social work and environmental and industrial technology. Internships are readily available in the Wichita Falls area, and we encourage students to gain practical experience in a real world, on-the-job learning situation. MSU is the first and only university in the nation to offer a master's degree program in radiological sciences. Study abroad opportunities include a summer program in British studies at the University of London, offered through a consortium arrangement with eight other institutions, and an exchange program with the Monterrey Institute of Technology, Chihuahua campus, Mexico.
Campus Life
For entertainment or personal enrichment, check first to see what's happening on campus. The University Programming Board may be sponsoring a movie, a comedian or another such activity in the Clark Student Center. Perhaps there's a theater performance, art show or concert in the Fain Fine Arts Center. The Artist Lecture Series brings celebrities to campus, like Danny Glover, astronaut James Lovell, actor Edward James Olmos or Darryl Van Leer. All activities offer free admission to our students with your MSU ID card. Four residence halls and an on-campus apartment complex provide convenient comfortable housing for almost 650 resident students. Each residence hall room is air conditioned, with telephone and cable TV connections provided. Living on campus puts you at the center of activities where it's especially easy to meet people and make new friends. More than 90 different campus organizations at MSU represent the wide-ranging interests of our student body. We offer something for everyone, including: 24 academic societies, 13 nationally affiliated fraternities and sororities, 23 honor societies, 25 special interest clubs and 10 religious organizations.
Facilities and Resources
When it comes to equipment, technology and other educational resources, you'll find everything you need at MSU. We are leaders in applying modern telecommunications for long distance education. MSU is a member of the Trans Texas Video Network. College courses are taught via interactive television between MSU and other institutions in the state of Texas. Among the many well-equipped classroom buildings at MSU is our Fain Fine Arts Center, which houses state-of-the-art facilities for art, music, theater and mass communications. Our broadcast journalism students produce weekly campus news programs in the television studio. Computers and access to the World Wide Web are available to our students. Students may use them in various buildings, including Killingsworth Hall, Moffett Library and Memorial Hall. Since 1981 $50-million has been spent on physical plant improvement. Renovations include the Bolin Science Hall, which houses top-of-the-line equipment for science, math and computer science. The construction of the $6-million J.S. Bridwell Hall, housing the health sciences, will create an academic center for programs. D.L. Ligon Coliseum contains two gymnasiums, a junior Olympic-sized pool, weight room, sauna and indoor running track. A tennis complex and practice fields are located just outside.
Athletics/Sports
Offering four intercollegiate sports for men and four for women, MSU competes in the Lone Star Conference, an expanding conference of NCAA Division II schools in Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma and New Mexico. Entering freshmen and junior college transfer graduates may be immediately eligible for competition, and athletic scholarships are available in all sports. Men's sports include soccer, basketball, football and tennis. Women's sports are soccer, basketball, volleyball and tennis. You don't have to be a varsity athlete to have fun with sports activities at MSU. Many of our students get their exercise and satisfy their competitive urges through the intramural sports program; in fact, we have one of the highest percentages of student intramural participation in the country. Activities range from table tennis and badminton to volleyball, basketball, football, frisbee golf and bowling.
Financial Aid
To receive financial aid, you must be accepted for admission to MSU. Submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form, which may be obtained from high school counselors or any college financial aid office. To contact the MSU Financial Aid Office, call 940-397-4214. Financial aid, which consists of grants, long-term and short-term loans and part-time employment, can help cover any existing difference between the cost of attending MSU and the resources available to you and your family. We handle each aid application on an individual basis to determine a suitable award, which may be one type of aid or a combination "package" of aid. April 1 is the preferred deadline for consideration for the fall term. MSU awards undergraduate academic scholarships each year based on your academic achievement, participation in extracurricular activities and other criteria as defined by specific scholarship programs. Applications are available through the Office of School Relations. Application deadlines are: fall, April 4, and spring, November 15. New undergraduate students must be accepted for admission by the printed deadlines to be considered for all awards.
Admission Requirements
As you look for a place to pursue your education, consider Midwestern State University. For unconditional admission, a student must meet our high school unit requirements plus one of the following: ACT score of 20 or higher; SAT score of 950 or higher; graduate in the 60th-99th percentile of high school class.
