United States Merchant Marine Academy
Kings Point, New York 11024-1699

U.S. Merchant Marine Academy
Facing Wiley Hall and the Mariners Chapel from Long Island Sound.

College Description
Kings Point, one of the five federal service academies, has become one of the world's foremost institutions in the field of maritime education. Upon graduation, a midshipman will receive a Bachelor of Science degree in marine transportation or marine engineering, a Coast Guard license to sail as a Third Mate or Third-Assistant Engineer, and a commission in the United States Naval Reserve. Today, graduates are serving with distinction in all sectors of the maritime and intermodal transportation industry, as well as career officers in the United States Navy, Coast Guard, Army, Air Force, and Marine Corps.

Academic Life
The academic curriculum at the Academy is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools and provides each midshipman with the broad education required of a bachelor of science degree, with the specialized training for licensing as a merchant marine officer, and with the military knowledge for commissioning in the U.S. Naval Reserve. The Academy challenges its midshipmen intellectually and few colleges can offer such a full range upon graduation. An integral part of the Academy curriculum is the training midshipmen receive at sea. During their four years at Kings Point, midshipmen spend half their sophomore and junior years aboard merchant vessels, sailing the trade routes of the world.

Campus Life
Where the academic program is challenging, the regimental system is rigorous. This system is designed to instill cooperation, leadership, self-discipline, responsibility, and pride in all our students. The freshman (fourth class or plebe) year is particularly strenuous as students make the transition from high school graduates to Academy midshipmen. In their first few months, they learn many new terms, the quality of endurance, how to perform under pressure, and, most importantly, how to manage time. All midshipmen reside on campus. Along with the regimental system are numerous extracurricular clubs and activities, among them the Drill Team, Fencing Club, Trident Scuba Diving Club, Regimental Band, and literary publications. The Academy also has chapters of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, the Marine Technology Society, and the Society of Women Engineers to supplement the academic and professional interests of midshipmen.

Facilities and Resources
The Academy campus and facilities comfortably accommodate the Regiment of Midshipmen. The campus has been laid out to take full advantage of the picturesque waterfront of Long Island's north shore. Although the majority of buildings were constructed during World War II, a major modernization program has rendered the classroom, laboratory, and dormitory facilities virtually brand new. The Schuyler Otis Bland Library is the Academy's major information resource center. Designed to support the curriculum, the library book collection of over 220,000 volumes provides a broad range of information on the subjects studied at the Academy. The library also has access to over 450 databases in a variety of disciplines.

Sports/Varsity Athletics
The goal of the Academy is to encourage the physical development and leadership qualities necessary for success in today's competitive world market by offering 26 varsity sports to its midshipmen. For male midshipmen we offer the following Division III sports: baseball, basketball, crew, cross-country, football, golf, lacrosse, outdoor track and field, pistol, rifle, intercollegiate sailing, soccer, swimming, tennis, volleyball, and wrestling. For the women we have: crew, cross-country, outdoor track and field, pistol, rifle, intercollegiate sailing, softball, swimming, and volleyball. In addition to the NCAA, the Academy is also affiliated with the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC), the Freedom Football Conference, the Skyline Athletic Conference, the Hudson Valley Lacrosse League, the Eastern Water Polo Association, and the Metropolitan Conference, which holds championships in swimming, track and field, men's volleyball, and wrestling.

Financial Aid
The Academy recognizes that some candidates may require financial assistance in order to pay for required midshipman costs. While Kings Point does not offer direct financial aid, candidates are urged to file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as early as possible to obtain assistance through the federal Family Educational Loan Program. The loans offered are the Federal Stafford Loan and the Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students (PLUS).

Admission Requirements
To qualify for admission to the Academy, a candidate must submit a completed application before the March 1 deadline. The Admissions Office evaluates each candidate's high school record and class rank, SAT and/or ACT scores, recommendations from school officials, history of extracurricular activities, and other evidence of character, leadership, and potential for academic achievement. Along with the application and scholastic history, the general eligibility requirements for admission to the Academy are the following: candidates must be of good moral character, be at least 17 years of age and not have passed their 25th birthday before July 1 in the year of admission, be citizens of the United States, obtain a Congressional nomination to the Academy, and be physically and medically qualified by the Department of Defense Medical Examination Review Board (DODMERB).
