College Description
Lehigh was founded in 1865 by industrialist and philanthropist Asa Packer, whose vision for the University, to provide a 'classical education for a useful life,' is still adhered to today. Lehigh's four colleges offer students an integrated education that is both liberal and technical. An intellectually stimulating combination of disciplines is a trademark of a Lehigh education. This is evident both in academic programs and in the flexibility students have to take courses among the different colleges. Lehigh enrolls about 4,400 undergraduate students, 38 percent of whom are women. Lehigh's growing minority population currently stands at 10 percent. Roughly 70 percent of the students come from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York, with the rest hailing from nearly every state and more than forty countries. Three quarters of Lehigh's students come from the top fifth of their high school class.

Academic Life
Lehigh's academic programs encourage development of oral and written communication skills, analytical and problem-solving abilities, and interpersonal skills. Frequent well-known guest speakers, seminars, plays, concerts, and art exhibits complement in-class learning. There are various opportunities for advanced foreign and experiential study. Lehigh also encourages students in all disciplines to integrate humanistic, social, and cultural values with technological utility. The College Scholar Program offers exceptional breadth and rigor to invited students who maintain a minimum 3.5 cumulative average, and the Freshman Seminar Program exposes all first-year students to small seminars with senior faculty. The curriculum proceeds from a strong liberal arts base, blending theoretical foundations with practical business applications. The program has been accredited since 1938 by the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business. Lehigh is one of about 100 colleges to have achieved 'triple accreditation' of its undergraduate and graduate business programs as well as its undergraduate accounting programs. Six interdisciplinary academic centers enrich programs for students through conferences, visiting experts, courses, and faculty and student research in the areas of business communications, economic education, entrepreneurship, innovation management, private enterprise, and real estate. Students can design personalized programs leading directly into other professional colleges or professions such as medicine, law, government, management, and architecture. In addition to interdisciplinary research projects with faculty members, the college offers a co-op program for students in the top third of the engineering class. Students still graduate in four years while working in industry the fall of their junior year and the summer before their senior year.

Campus Life
More than 100 buildings dot the wooded hillside of the Asa Packer Campus, Lehigh's original location, now one of three contiguous campuses encompassing more than 1,600 acres. The Asa Packer Campus is a mixture of stunning old and new structures, from fraternity and sorority houses and residence halls to athletic and academic buildings. The Mountaintop Campus provides additional teaching and research space. Approximately 75 percent of all undergraduates live on campus in residence halls, fraternity or sorority houses, apartments, and specialty housing, such as the Umoja House, Creative Arts House, and the Science and Technology House. There are twenty- nine fraternities and seven sororities on campus. There are about twenty- five club sports and many other student clubs, honor societies, and religious organizations. Students must work hard to meet stringent academic demands, but the University provides support services to ensure each student ample opportunity to succeed. Lehigh's Student Life Office directs students toward help with academic or personal problems, legal issues, or general concerns. Lehigh offers a health center, fitness center, counseling service, drug and alcohol counseling service, testing service, and learning center. The University provides career planning and placement throughout students' undergraduate years and offers comprehensive support services for minority students.

Facilities and Resources
Students can draw upon well-equipped laboratories and faculty experts who welcome undergraduate involvement in research and scholarship. Lehigh was one of the first U.S. institutions to install a campuswide telecommunications network with telephone and computing network capabilities in every student residence and faculty and staff office. The system provides access to a number of campus computing services, including electronic mail and storage and printing support for the entire campus. The network allows library users access to the University's on-line catalog and to several hundred national and international electronic databases.

Athletics/Sports/ Coaches Directory
Twenty-three varsity athletic teams compete in the Patriot League, which emphasizes the scholar-athlete at the division 1 level. Football is IAA. An intramural program of thirty sports and other activities is also offered; 80 percent of the students participate. The Murray Goodman Athletic Campus features the 16,000- seat Goodman Stadium for football; the 6,000-seat Stabler Arena for athletic contests, concerts, and special events; the Rauch Field House; and outdoor athletic fields for intercollegiate and intramural sports.

Financial Aid/ Scholarships
The Office of Financial Aid coordinates aid sources to assist students, including University, state, and federal grants and loans and campus and campus employment. Lehigh students frequently borrow from the Federal Stafford Student Loan Program. The application forms required are the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and CSS FA Profile, which should be completed and submitted to the College Scholarship Service between January 1 and February 15 for freshman, and Lehigh's own Freshman Application for Financial Aid, which is included with the application for admission in the viewbook mailed to all those who inquire. Students must also apply to state grant programs, if they are available. Notification of aid is sent in late March or early April. In October 1994 Lehigh's Board of Trustee approved the establishment of Merit Scholarships and fifth-year-free program for all students attaining a GPA of 3.5 or better.

Admission Requirements/ Application
When Lehigh encourages men and women of all backgrounds to consider study at the University. All applicants should have completed 4 years of English, 3 or 4 years of mathematics, 2-4 years of history and social studies, 2-4 years of laboratory science, and 2 years of foreign language. Each college also has specific courses required for admission. Because an individual's potential for success cannot be fully reflected in the mere accumulation of units in a four-year college- preparatory program, the Office of Admissions takes into account a number of criteria in evaluating applicants, first and foremost of which is the strength of the high school record. The University requires either the SAT I or ACT, and they must be taken by December of the senior year. Lehigh encourages candidates to arrange an interview and a campus visit and to talk with faculty members and students. The Office of Admissions is pleased to assist in making arrangements. A visit to the campus for an interview or an information session is highly recommended.
