Lawrence University
Main Hall, built in 1853, is the location of faculty offices and classrooms for the humanities.

College Description
Lawrence University, an undergraduate college of the liberal arts and sciences and a conservatory of music, recently celebrated its 150th anniversary. Located on a bluff overlooking the Fox River in Appleton, a thriving community in northeast Wisconsin that enjoys low unemployment and low crime, the 84-acre campus adjoins the downtown area and is bordered on two sides by lovely turn-of-the-century homes. Lawrence draws together students and faculty who are serious about scholarship, who enjoy collaborative as well as independent pursuits, who seek creative approaches to all they do, and who are committed to significant community service. They value honesty and integrity, appreciate literature, art, and music, engage in vigorous discussions, seek academic challenge, and celebrate achievement. The Lawrence community enjoys each other's ideas, contributions, and individuality.

Academic Life
All students at Lawrence engage in two terms of Freshman Studies, a unique course that introduces them to ideas of abiding concern, probes the nature of knowledge, and cultivates the skills of analysis and expression essential to educated discourse. A core curriculum exposes students to all areas of the liberal arts and sciences and encourages them to explore many areas before choosing a major area of focus. In addition to some 25 major areas of study, Lawrence offers interdisciplinary areas of study that include linguistics, international studies, environmental studies, cognitive studies, biomedical ethics, and gender studies. The curriculum lays an outstanding foundation for professional training in medicine, law, business, education and journalism. And Lawrence offers a number of cooperative programs in which students earn the undergraduate degree from Lawrence and a second degree from another university in such areas as engineering, forestry and environmental studies, allied health fields, and social service administration. As a member of the Associated Colleges of the Midwest, Lawrence offers two dozen off-campus programs both in the United States and abroad, including destinations such as Zimbabwe, Florence, Hong Kong, Tokyo, India, Costa Rica, Washington DC, Chicago, and the Czech Republic. In addition, Lawrence provides its own off-campus study programs to the Cayman Islands for marine biology and geology research; to Germany, France, Senegal, Latin America or Spain, and Russia for language study; and to London, where Lawrence operates its own year-long program.

Campus Life
More than 90% of Lawrence's students live on campus all four years, creating a close-knit learning environment. Six residence halls, several theme houses, and five national fraternity houses are among the housing options available. More than 100 campus organizations are officially recognized by LUCC, the student-faculty government on campus, providing a wide range of activities and interests. Among the most popular are Lawrence International, which comprises not only the international students but also more domestic students than any other organization; the outdoor recreation club, which sponsors weekly rafting, camping, hiking, or biking trips; and volunteer service of a variety of descriptions, with more than half of the student body actively involved in community service. The Conservatory of Music and Theater Department present more than 200 performances throughout the academic year. Intramural sports in the college's recreation center-which includes swimming and diving facilities, saunas, racquetball courts, exercise equipment, a running track, an aerobic studio, and basketball courts exclusively for health and recreation-attract a high percentage of students and faculty alike. As an NCAA Division III school, Lawrence offers 23 varsity sports for men and women, among the most offered by any college in the nation.

Facilities and Resources
Every residence hall room, the library, and all academic buildings are linked to the Internet with fiber optics. A time-sharing Digital Alpha 4000-610 computer dedicated to student and faculty use, with more than 250 terminals, PCs, and Macintosh computers located across the campus, provides round-the-clock access to the system. The library's holdings include more than 350,000 volumes, 300,000 government documents, 1,400 periodical subscriptions, 18,000 recordings and videotapes, and 100,000 microform items. A new Art Center, boasting three galleries, a print gallery, classrooms and faculty offices, an outdoor amphitheater, and two- and three-dimensional studios, supports the endeavors of the studio art and art history departments. The Conservatory of Music, housed in three adjoining facilities, provides practice rooms, major ensembles rehearsal space, radio studios, recording studios, classrooms and faculty offices, several smaller recital halls and the 1,200-seat concert hall, and student lounge areas. A new Social Sciences and Math building, complementing the computational and laboratory facilities for the natural sciences opened recently.

Financial Aid
Lawrence guarantees to meet the full financial need of every student offered admission, as evidenced via institutional methodology. The college adheres to a need-blind admission policy. Applicants for financial aid must submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), the Lawrence Application for Financial Aid, and parent and student federal tax forms with W-2 forms and schedules as appropriate. More than 75% of each entering class receives need-based aid, with the average aid package exceeding $18,000, the majority of which was gift money not requiring repayment. In addition to need-based aid, Lawrence offers merit-based awards to students exhibiting outstanding academic achievement and/or, for the bachelor of music degree applicants, musical talent. Awards range from $2,500 to $10,000 per year and are renewable. The largest scholarships of $5,000, $7,500, and $10,000 per year require participation in one of four on-campus scholarship competition days held in January and February.

Admission Requirements
The admission committee considers the strength of an applicant's curriculum within their high school environment, requiring a minimum of 16 units in English, math, history, science, and foreign languages, plus grades, class rank, standardized test scores, recommendations, and extracurricular activities, roughly in that order. More than 50% of the entering class graduate in the top 10% of their high school classes. Lawrence accepts either the SAT I or the ACT and strongly recommends a campus visit and interview. Applicants to the bachelor of music degree or the five-year double degree program also must audition and take a theory test in order to be considered. Both on-campus and national auditions in ten cities are available by appointment. There are two early decision deadlines (November 15 and January 1); the regular decision deadline is February 1, with student notification guaranteed by April 1. Lawrence accepts applications from high school juniors who are prepared to begin their college experience early.
