Forest College
Lake Forest, Illinois

Overview
Lake Forest College is a coeducational undergraduate
community of 1,400 students that celebrates the personal growth accompanying
the quest for excellence. Founded in 1857, Lake Forest provides a secure
residential campus of great beauty and enriches its curriculum with the
vibrant resources of Chicago.
More than eighty student organizations, groups,
and clubs provide students with a wide range of extracurricular opportunities.
These enriching experiences work in unison with Lake Forest’s commitment
to high standards of academic excellence and integrity. Lake Forest College
helps individuals develop lives of leadership, service, and personal fulfillment.
Location
and Community
Thirty miles north of Chicago on the western shore of Lake Michigan, Lake
Forest College is situated on 107 scenic wooded acres in a residential
community. The town of Lake Forest is 25 miles from O’Hare International
Airport. Students are within an easy commute by train of Chicago, a world-class
city of nearly 3 million people and a treasure of cultural resources.
Chicago has become an extension of the campus. Internships, independent
study, research projects, and field trips are readily available through
Chicago’s vast resources. Academic
Life
Lake Forest College bases its academic calendar on two 15-week semesters,
from late August through mid-December and from mid-January through early
May. The curriculum establishes an integrated framework for the general
education of undergraduate students across four years of study. The curriculum
includes general education requirements, which ensure that students receive
educational breadth as well as depth while allowing considerable latitude
in designing individual programs of study. Also included are requirements
for writing and cultural diversity. Students are expected to pass thirty-two
courses, fulfill the general education requirements, and complete the
requirements of a major. Majors
Offered:
Lake Forest College awards the Bachelor of Arts
(B.A.) degree in twenty departments and a number of interdisciplinary
majors spanning more than 500 courses. Departmental majors are art, biology,
business, chemistry, communications, computer science, economics, education
(in conjunction with another major), English, French, history, mathematics,
music, philosophy, physics, politics, psychology, sociology and anthropology,
Spanish, and theater. The interdisciplinary majors are American studies,
area studies, Asian studies, environmental studies, international relations,
and Latin American studies. Language courses are also available in Arabic,
Chinese, and Japanese.
Students may create
their own majors through the independent scholar program, which enables
qualified and motivated students to design and pursue individual degree
programs that focus on particular topics or themes rather than on a single
academic discipline.
In addition, students
can declare a minor in those departmental and nondepartmental programs
that have a major as well as in African-American studies, German, metropolitan
studies, religion, and women’s and gender studies. A minor requires
at least four courses.
Lake Forest offers
a cooperative degree (3-2) program with the Sever School of Engineering
of Washington University (St. Louis). Students may receive a Bachelor
of Arts degree from Lake Forest and a Bachelor of Science degree from
Washington University.
Facilities
and Resources
In fall 2004, Lake Forest College opened the doors of a new, twenty-first-century
library and information technology center. An $18-million expansion and
renovation project, the new facility incorporates the latest concepts,
ideas, and technological innovations pertaining to teaching and learning
while providing a comfortable environment for collaboration, including
a 24-hour computer lab, a cyber café, a production and rhetoric
room, smart classrooms, and a technology resource room. A new student
center opened in spring 2006, offering a host of amenities to foster community
and socializing outside the classroom.
Currently, the Donnelley
Library contains approximately 300,000 books and government documents
and 900 current periodical subscriptions. In addition, the library provides
online access to articles from several thousand electronic periodical
titles. The library features a strong literacy program, through which
students can gain proficiency with a wide variety of information resources.
Lake Forest students and faculty members have online access to the holdings
of sixty-five academic libraries statewide and can borrow books online
from any of those libraries. The library’s Special Collections Unit
includes the College Archives and houses rare books, manuscripts, and
government documents.
Information technology
services works closely with library staff members to support the information
and technology needs of the campus. There are more than 130 public-access
computers available for student use in computing labs on campus. The Technology
Resource Center, which is equipped with advanced high-end computing hardware
and software, is available for students and faculty members, and technology
specialists are on hand for assistance. The library, the student center,
and all residence hall rooms have wireless access; faculty offices, laboratories,
and classrooms are connected to the College’s fiber-optic network.
From their residence hall rooms, students have full access to the Internet
and all networked campus services. All students receive e-mail accounts
and accounts on a College Web server.
Among the fifty-five
buildings on campus is the Dixon Science Research Center, which is designed
for student-faculty research. The modern three-story, 7,500-square-foot
facility contains thirteen laboratories and two animal holding facilities.
State-of-the-art equipment includes a nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer
with a 400-megahertz superconductivity magnet, a solid-state gamma-ray
spectrometer, a multi-imaging phosphorimager, digital-storage oscilloscopes,
and fluorescence microscopes.
Campus
Life
A national liberal arts college, Lake Forest prides itself on diversity,
with students representing forty-seven states and fifty-four other countries.
International students and members of minority groups comprise more than
25 percent of the Lake Forest student body. With 82 percent of its students
living in residence halls, Lake Forest fosters interaction and shared
experiences among its diverse population. Lake Forest offers each student
the opportunity to develop a variety of life skills.
Sports
/ Varsity Athletics
As you enter the Sports Center, a sign hangs
that reads..."LAKE FOREST
COLLEGE: A Tradition of Excellence."This "excellence"
is what the athletic department strives for in every aspect of our programming.
Whether it be varsity athletics, club sports, intramurals, physical education,
or general recreation, we encourage participation, honor achievement and,
most of all, commend effort. All programs embrace the principles of gender
equity, cultural diversity, sportsmanship and fair play. Members of the
athletic department support the College's mission statement by consistently
challenging students to reach their potential as students and as athletes.
We support and encourage academic excellence and take great pride in the
students who excel academically. Similarly, we take great pride in those
students who excel athletically.
All in all, we want
every student involved with our program to feel they are part of a quality
program, and that in some way, add to our tradition of "excellence."

Admission
Requirements / Application
Lake Forest College has a test-optional admission
practice, permitting students to choose whether or not to have their ACT
or SAT scores considered as part of their application for admission. Admission
to Lake Forest College is competitive and based on a record of achievement
in academic studies and extracurricular activities. Selection includes
assessment of a student’s program of study, academic achievement,
aptitude, intellectual curiosity, qualities of character and personality,
and activities both within and outside the school setting. Lake Forest
College unequivocally selects its students without regard to social background,
religious affiliation, race, national origin, gender, handicap, or financial
position. This admission policy is manifest in the diverse nature of the
student community.
Students are urged
to begin the application procedure early in their final year of secondary
school. The Early Action deadline is December 1. This option is nonbinding
but allows the student to receive an admission decision as early as mid-January.
The Early Decision (binding) deadline is December 1. The Regular Decision
deadline is February 15.
Lake Forest recommends
a precollege program that includes a minimum of 4 years of English; 3
or more years of mathematics, including trigonometry; in-depth study in
one or more foreign languages; and 2 to 4 years of work in both the social
and natural sciences. Personal interviews are required for those choosing
not to submit standardized test scores and are strongly encouraged for
all candidates. The admission staff welcomes and encourages visits to
the campus by prospective students and their families.
Candidates for undergraduate
admission may obtain the required application forms by contacting the
Admission Office. Lake Forest College also accepts the Common Application
in lieu of its own form and gives equal consideration to both. Students
may obtain copies of the Common Application from their high school. Students
who wish to defer enrollment should complete the application procedure
during the final year of secondary school.
Transfer students
are admitted at the beginning of each semester. Transfer applicants should
have achieved an overall college average of at least a C or its equivalent
and be eligible to return to their previous institutions. When a transfer
student is admitted to the College, the maximum credit accepted in transfer
is 59 semester hours. All transfer students are required to submit the
following credentials: an application for admission, a secondary school
transcript, transcripts of all college work completed through the most
recent term, and a letter of recommendation from the academic dean or
a professor at the current college (for students with more than 30 semester
hours).
