King’s College
Wilkes-Barre, PA

Overview
King’s College is an independent four-year Catholic college with more than 2,200 men and women students. Founded by the Holy Cross Fathers and Brothers of the University of Notre Dame in 1946, King’s prepares students for a purposeful life with an education that integrates the human values inherent in a broadly based liberal arts curriculum. The College encourages the religious, moral, personal, and social development of its students.

In addition to the undergraduate degrees, King’s College offers a Master of Science (M.S.) degree, a Master of Education (M.Ed.) degree (with a concentration in reading), and a five-year physician assistant studies program leading to a master’s degree.

Campus features include the Charles E. and Mary Parente Life Sciences Center, the Mulligan Physical Sciences Center, the William G. McGowan School of Business, and Robert L. Betzler Fields, a 33.5-acre athletic complex that includes a field house and fields for baseball, softball, men’s and women’s soccer, football, and field hockey. The 15-acre campus also includes Monarch Court; the recently renovated Sheehy-Farmer Campus Center, which includes an art gallery, an outdoor waterfall, a student restaurant, and marketplace dining; the J. Carroll McCormick Campus Ministry Center; and the William S. Scandlon Physical Education Center, which includes a 3,200-seat basketball arena, wrestling facilities, racquetball and handball courts, an Olympic-size swimming pool, a rifle range, and a state-of-the-art sports medicine facility. The College also has a 5,000-square-foot weight room, with more than 13,000 pounds of free weights, that is approved by the American Weightlifting Federation, and a strength and fitness center. The Student Health Center is located in Hafey-Marian Hall, a modern six-story building housing classrooms and faculty offices, and a consulting physician is on call at all times. The six-story administration and science buildings form a unit that houses the College’s theater, a cafeteria, administrative offices, science laboratories, and classrooms. Residence halls have cable television and individual phone service in the rooms.

Location and Community
The King’s campus is located in a residential area near downtown Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, a city of approximately 50,000 on the banks of the Susquehanna River. A growing city, Wilkes-Barre has developed both economically and culturally, yet it has avoided many typical urban problems. The crime rate in the city is one of the lowest in the nation. Local events include the Cherry Blossom Festival, a national ice carving competition, and the Fine Arts Fiesta. Shopping malls, multiplex theaters, parks, art galleries, and restaurants are nearby. Two blocks from King’s is the F. M. Kirby Center, which has hosted national performances, music groups, traveling theater, and more. National recording acts regularly perform in nearby venues.

Academic Life
Academic advising begins before students enroll and continues with an innovative program of career development across the curriculum. King’s Academic Skills Center includes a nationally certified tutoring program and a faculty-staffed writing center. More than 80 percent of King’s first-year students return for their sophomore year, a percentage well above the national average. Over 70 percent of students who attend King’s graduate from the College, and 100 percent are employed within six months of graduation.

Majors Offered:
King’s awards Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Associate in Arts, and Associate in Science degrees. The College’s thirty-five major programs are offered in the arts and sciences and the William G. McGowan School of Business, which is accredited by AACSB International—The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business.

Arts and sciences include the humanities and social sciences division (computers and information systems, criminal justice, economics, English-literature, English-writing, French, history, mass communication, philosophy, political science, psychology, sociology, Spanish, theater, and theology); the education division (early childhood, elementary, secondary certification, and special education), which is a candidate for NCATE accreditation; the science division (biology, chemistry, computer science, environmental science, environmental studies, general science, mathematics, and neuroscience); and the allied health division (clinical lab science, physician assistant studies, and athletics training education/sports medicine accredited by CAAHEP). Available majors in the William G. McGowan School of Business are accounting, business administration, finance, human resource management, international business, and marketing. King’s offers preprofessional programs in chiropractic, dentistry, law, medicine, optometry, pharmacy, and veterinary science.

Facilities and Resources
King’s facilities include the 51,000-square-foot, three-story D. Leonard Corgan Library, which contains several study rooms, a 100-seat auditorium, and a 160,000-volume collection accessed by a computerized catalog. The library uses its affiliation with the Online Computer Library Center to provide students and faculty members with access to college and research libraries throughout the United States. The library provides full-text databases from every computer on campus. Students and faculty members have direct access to more than 1 million volumes through the local library cooperative (NEPBC).

King’s features computer labs with more than 440 PCs; 24-hour labs in residence halls; e-mail accounts for all students; computerized library databases; multimedia classrooms with a variety of instructional aids; course discussions on electronic bulletin boards and chats via e-mail outside of the traditional classroom; a technology component of the core curriculum that requires all students to learn to access, process, and develop their own computer and information presentation skills; distance learning facilities for teleconferencing; satellite down-link capabilities in the 220-seat Burke Auditorium of the William G. McGowan School of Business; and cross-registration with area colleges that enables students to take courses complementary to their majors.

The $6.4-million Charles E. and Mary Parente Life Sciences Center, which contains a molecular biology laboratory and a genomics center, includes computer facilities, instrumentation rooms, a rooftop greenhouse, and environmental chambers. The $6-million Mulligan Physical Sciences Center includes modern research laboratories, computer facilities, and state-of-the-art instrumentation used for molecular identification.

Campus Life
More than fifty student organizations provide King’s students with the opportunity to explore interests outside the classroom. Cocurricular activities include academic clubs in almost every department, the King’s Players (theater), the nationally ranked debate team, Cantores Christi Regis, Campus Ministry, the Experiencing the Arts Series, The Crown (student newspaper), the Regis (yearbook), and SCOP (literary magazine)

King’s is a short drive from several ski resorts, state parks, and major lakes, as well as the stadium of the New York Yankees’ AAA baseball team, the Pocono International Raceway, and the Wachovia Arena, which is home to the Pittsburgh Penguins’ minor-league ice hockey team and features regular concerts and is the site of the King’s commencement. New York City and Philadelphia are within a 2½-hour drive; Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and Morristown, New Jersey, are within 2 hours; and New England and Washington, D.C., are within 4 hours.

Diversity
The Office of Multicultural and International Student Affairs provides support and advocacy for all students, especially African, Latino/Chicano, Asian, and Native American students and other under-represented groups. The primary focus is to provide services and programs which meet the needs of the ALANA community while helping them build meaningful relationships with other King's students. The Office of Multicultural and International Student Affairs is student-centered and, therefore, provides many opportunities for students to initiate, coordinate, and implement programs which enhance their personal, social, and intellectual development at King's College.

Sports / Varsity Athletics
Student athletics include intercollegiate competition in men’s baseball, basketball, football, golf, lacrosse, soccer, swimming, tennis, and wrestling; women’s basketball, field hockey, lacrosse, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, and volleyball; and coed cross-country. Club sports include cheerleading, ice hockey, and track and field. Intramural sports include basketball, bowling, field hockey, flag football, racquetball, softball, street hockey, and volleyball.

Expenses
Tuition for full-time students is $23,280. Room and board total $8,850.

Financial Aid / Scholarships
King’s assists all qualified students through its financial aid programs. Currently, more than 95 percent of King’s students currently receive financial aid in the form of scholarships, grants, work-study, or loans. Aid is awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need, the difference between the total cost of education and the expected family contribution. Usually, a combination of financial aid sources and types are used in a student’s financial aid package. Of all financial aid awarded to its students, grants and scholarships funded by King’s comprise approximately 40 percent of the total aid awarded.

In addition to financial aid programs, installment payment plans are available, offering students and/or their families the ability to make monthly payments throughout the academic year. Students who wish to be considered for financial aid must fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the King’s College Financial Aid Application. The preferred filing deadline for new freshmen is February 15. Forms are mailed to students accepted for admission but can be completed prior to acceptance.

Admission Requirements / Application
King’s encourages applications from qualified high school students and those who wish to transfer from another institution. To be considered for admission, students must be prepared to pursue successfully a program of study at the College, as evidenced by the quality of previous academic and extracurricular performance, the recommendation of school officials and character references, and the student’s display of personal promise, maturity, and motivation. King’s admits students of any race, sex, color, creed, or national or ethnic origin.

Admission decisions are made for both high school students and transfer students with the understanding that all current courses and examinations will be completed satisfactorily. Candidates should complete 4 years of mathematics (through trigonometry or precalculus). One year of high school chemistry and biology and physics is also strongly recommended.

The Office of Admission offers two methods for candidates to apply for admission: the SAT/ACT Traditional Choice and the Standardized Test Option/Essay Choice. Applicants are required to state their preference prior to the application review, and the decision is nonreversible. Students who select the SAT/ACT Traditional Choice must submit a completed application, official high school transcripts, SAT or ACT scores, guidance counselor recommendation, an essay, and the $30 application fee. Students who choose the Standardized Test Option/Essay Choice must submit a completed application, official high school transcripts, an official graded writing sample from either their junior or senior year—submitted and notarized by the high school guidance office, guidance counselor recommendation, an essay, and the $30 application fee.
