Juniata College
Huntingdon, Pennsylvania

Overview
Juniata College is an independent, coeducational college of liberal arts and sciences, founded in 1876 by members of the Church of the Brethren to prepare individuals “for the useful occupations of life.” Juniata College holds a place of national prominence in higher education. Recent studies rank the College highly in the percentage of graduates that eventually earn doctoral degrees; one, in fact, ranked Juniata in the top 10 percent in the nation among all four-year private undergraduate institutions. Juniata’s national reputation is strongest in several fields, including biology, chemistry, environmental science and education, health sciences, peace and conflict studies, and prelaw. The College is known for the personal attention it gives students. Each student is assigned 2 faculty advisers, and the average student-faculty ratio is 13:1.

Location and Community
Juniata is located in Huntingdon, which lies in the scenic Allegheny Mountains of central Pennsylvania. Huntingdon is a charming community of 10,000 residents. It is 30 minutes from the cities of Altoona (pop. 65,000) and State College (pop. 55,000), Pennsylvania. The 110 acres on College Hill overlook the historic architecture of a classic river town. Juniata’s campus also consists of a 365-acre field station and a 315-acre nature preserve. The surrounding area is suited for many outdoor activities, including swimming, fishing, hunting, rock climbing, and hiking. Raystown Lake, the largest recreational lake wholly in Pennsylvania, is only 15 minutes from Juniata. Several major cities lie within a short drive of the campus—3 hours to Pittsburgh, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C.; 4 hours to Philadelphia; and 5 hours to New York City. The nearest commercial airport is in State College, the location of Penn State University. In addition, Huntingdon is on the main U.S. east-west railway line, with travel by train to East and West Coast cities available.

Academic Life
Designed to foster individual responsibility, Juniata’s flexible and academically rigorous program allows both acquisition of a broad range of knowledge and in-depth examination of a particular field. Almost 50 percent of the students attending Juniata develop their own program through a flexible program of emphasis (POE).

Students must satisfactorily complete 120 semester credit hours. Writing, computer and bibliographic skills, and the transition to college are addressed in the freshman year. Graduation requirements also include a two-course cultural analysis sequence, advanced communication/writing skills, quantitative studies, social sciences, humanities, international, fine arts, and natural sciences and an optional service learning component. In addition, all students complete a 45—60 credit POE, and many choose to complete an integrative senior project to graduate with distinction.

Many students include independent study and independent research in their POEs. Although not required, 87 percent of students participate in internships. The Juniata College Center for International Education provides excellent study-abroad opportunities that are taken advantage of by approximately 40 percent of the junior class. Experiences include summer, semester, and year-long opportunities.

Majors Offered:
Juniata awards B.A. and B.S. degrees in the arts, humanities, natural sciences, and social sciences. Rather than complete a traditional major, each Juniata student designs a Program of Emphasis (POE) that is tailored to the student’s own goals and often crosses departmental lines. Working closely with 2 academic advisers, students select courses for either a designated or an individualized POE.

Current areas of study include accounting; anthropology; art (art history; museum studies, with an art history focus; and studio fine arts); arts management; biological sciences (biochemistry, biology, botany, ecology, microbiology, molecular and cell physiology, and zoology); business (business and IT, finance, human resource management, international business, management, and marketing); chemistry; communication; communication and conflict resolution; computer science; criminal justice; digital media; early childhood education; early childhood and special education; earth and space science; economics; elementary education; elementary and special education; English; entrepreneurial studies; environmental science; environmental studies; exploratory studies; geology; health communication; history; interdisciplinary studies (humanities, liberal arts, natural sciences, and social sciences); information technology; international politics; international studies; languages (French, German, Russian, and Spanish); marine science; mathematics; peace and conflict studies; philosophy, politics, and economics; philosophy and religious studies; physics (engineering physics, physics, and pre-engineering); politics; prehealth (art therapy, biotechnology, cardiovascular technology, cytotechnology, diagnostic imaging/radiography, genetic counseling, health administration, medical technology, nursing, occupational therapy, physical therapy, and physician’s assistant studies); pre—health professions (chiropractic medicines, dentistry, medicine, optometry, pharmacy, podiatry, public health, and veterinary science); prelaw; preministry; psychology; public administration; religion; secondary education (biology, chemistry, communication, earth and space science, English, French, general science, German, mathematics, physics, social studies, and Spanish); social work; sociology; and theater (performing arts management and theater performance).

Facilities and Resources
Juniata’s academic programs are complemented by up-to-date technology, labs, and bibliographic resources. In addition to the College’s academic computer center, the campus has high-tech classroom/laboratory and computer labs devoted specifically to business, education, psychology, and world languages. The College supports the Juniata Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership (JCEL), a unique opportunity for students of all academic areas to pursue developing their own business. JCEL provides students with hands-on experience in every aspect of entrepreneurial endeavors. A human interaction lab offers students the opportunity to study communication and group interaction. In addition, the College has a distance learning and teleconferencing facility, multimedia classrooms, and a teaching and learning technology center (Solutions Center) for both student and faculty member use. The Solutions Center was designed to give faculty members and students the resources for utilizing advanced technology in their course work and presentations. The William J. von Liebig Center for Science is a $20-million facility that provides state-of-the-art facilities for teaching and learning in chemistry and biology. The Brumbaugh Academic Center houses the business, communications, computer science, environmental sciences, information technology, mathematics, and physical sciences departments.

For research projects, students in the natural sciences use laboratories equipped with sophisticated instrumentation typically reserved for graduate students. Juniata’s Raystown Field Station serves as an ecology, zoology, and environmental science laboratory. The field station recently expanded facilities to allow students to live and learn at an on-site field laboratory. Juniata’s Beeghly Library provides the College with an online public-access catalog that is accessible campuswide and an extensive CD-ROM network.

Campus Life
Juniata is a very strong community where student involvement is paramount. There are no fraternities or sororities so the entire campus gets involved. School spirit and campus activities are the heart and soul of the institution. The 100 clubs and service organizations not only impact the Juniata community but also the larger community of Huntingdon and the surrounding area.

Sports / Varsity Athletics
In addition to competing in 20 NCAA Division III varsity sports, Juniata students have the chance to participate in a variety of club, intramural and individual activities that allow them to enjoy the thrill of competition and meet people with similar athletic/recreational interests.

Expenses
The general fee was approximately $38,220, with tuition costs of $28,900, and room, board, and fee costs of $9,320. Several special and occasional fees of $30—$300 for laboratory or studio use are also required.

Financial Aid / Scholarships
The Juniata College Office of Student Financial Planning is committed to building relationships with families striving to meet the long-term investment needs associated with quality education. Juniata succeeds by maximizing available assistance opportunities from Juniata programs as well as state and federal government programs in the form of grants, loans, and work-study initiatives. The College’s commitment includes scholarship and loan programs. Juniata’s Academic Scholarship Program offers aggressive scholarship programs designed to recognize and reward academic achievement. Students who exhibit promise of future success may be eligible for academic awards ranging from $8000 to full tuition, room, and board. Students who wish to be considered for Nomination Scholarships should have their admission applications postmarked no later than January 4 of their senior year.

Juniata representatives work with each family, matching their individual circumstances to all applicable aid programs. For need-based aid, individual plans are developed using the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as the basis for determining need. The results of the FAFSA needs analysis should reach Juniata by March 1.

Admission Requirements / Application
Juniata seeks students who show strong academic promise, motivation, and maturity. The College seeks a wide geographic representation and a variety of cultural, social, and economic backgrounds. Selection is made without regard to race, sex, religion, creed, color, handicap, or the ability to afford a private college education. Careful consideration is given to the academic record, test results, and personal qualities of applicants. Applicants should have completed a minimum of sixteen college-preparatory courses in mathematics, social studies, world language, and laboratory science. International student candidates may be required to submit TOEFL scores. Interviews and campus visits are strongly recommended.

Transfer students who have completed A.A. or A.S. requirements in an approved collegiate transfer program at an accredited community or junior college may enter Juniata with junior-class standing and receive transfer credit for two years of course work. Students who transfer without a degree receive credit on a course-by-course basis. Students whose college has a formal transfer agreement with Juniata College should consult with their transfer coordinator to review requirements for that agreement. It is strongly recommended that transfer students have an interview.
