Iona College
New Rochelle, New York

Overview
Iona College is a four-year, coed, comprehensive college in the suburbs of New York City. It is a medium-sized college with an average class size of 15 students. Iona offers more than forty majors. The most popular undergraduate majors are biology, business, computer science, education, and mass communication. Iona is a Catholic college, founded by the Congregation of Christian Brothers, where learning ethical decisions and a commitment of service to others are part of the mission.

Iona's overall enrollment is about 4,800 students, of whom 3,100 are traditional undergraduate students. The student body is talented and diverse, with students coming from thirty-five states and fifty-four countries. Thirty-three percent of the students are members of minority groups and contribute to a college environment that values diversity.

The Office of Student Development operates two student clubs: the Gael Club, a nightclub; and the Iona coffeehouse in the new LaPenta Student Union. Student Development also organizes many activities for students to participate in each week. The activities include trips to New York City for theater, sports, and museums; movie nights; parties and dances; karaoke nights; wellness workshops; and other activities.

Iona offers five different residence facilities, and 67 percent of freshmen live on campus. The College's board plan includes the normal campus dining hall, but also can be used at nine local restaurants.

Location and Community
Iona's campus is located in New Rochelle, New York, one of the oldest cities in the U.S. Founded in 1654, New Rochelle is a city of 70,000 on the shore of the Long Island Sound. It is a suburban community that borders New York City. Public transportation allows students to easily travel to Manhattan via commuter train in less than 30 minutes.

Academic Life
The College offers the B.A., B.S., and B.B.A. degrees to undergraduate students. The B.A. and B.S. degrees require a total of 120 credits for completion; for B.B.A. degrees, a total of 126 credits is required. As a general rule, the core curriculum fills one third of the student's credit total; a major fills the second third; and elective courses, a minor, or a second major fill the final third. During the fall and spring semesters, most students take five 3-credit courses. Classes are also offered during an intensive winter session and during two summer sessions.

An honors program is available for top students who want additional enhancement to their academic program. Special courses, seminars, mentoring, advising, and off-campus opportunities are part of the honors students' curriculum.

Iona College has approximately 170 full-time and 80 part-time faculty members; 92 percent possess the terminal degree in their field. Faculty members conduct research and write books and articles, but their primary responsibility is teaching undergraduate students. All classes are taught by faculty members—there are no teaching assistants.

The student-faculty ratio is 16:1. Faculty members are readily available to meet for individual conferences. In addition, because of the College's proximity to New York City, many faculty members include regular trips to Manhattan as part of their classes and invite guest speakers to lecture about special topics.

Iona College encourages students to broaden their educational experience through study and travel abroad. Iona sponsors summer, semester, and intersession programs in Australia, Belgium, England, France, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, Morocco, and Spain. The College also offers a wide range of internships in most majors. In recent years, students have held internships at some of the best-known corporate names in New York City and the surrounding area.

The campus features one of the first wireless computer networks in the U.S. and other significant technological advantages. The predominant style of architecture is red-brick Georgian. During the past few years, every major facility on campus has been renovated. In August 2005, the College opened the LaPenta Student Union and in January 2006 will open the Hynes Athletics Center which will house fitness and health center facilities.

The major academic buildings, including John G. Hagan Hall, Myles B. Amend Hall, and Doorley Hall have been renovated recently to include seminar rooms and computer presentation facilities. The new Iona College Arts Center provides space for the study of art, dance, and music and includes the Brother Kenneth Chapman Gallery. The John A. The on-site collections, including more than 261,000 volumes, 687 periodical titles, audiovisual materials, and microforms, have been developed to support Iona's curriculum and special interests. They are readily available through the libraries' Web site, which offers subject databases with thousands of complete articles, electronic encyclopedias, and a link to the Internet. Students can access these resources from on and off campus, as well as from the libraries' eighty networked public computers and laptops.

The Student Government Association (SGA) is a service organization that coordinates, supervises, and promotes student activities. The SGA also provides a necessary degree of leadership and coordination for the more than seventy student clubs and societies that are part of the student life at Iona College. Such student groups further the ideals and spirit of the College, attend to particular student interests, and present a definite opportunity for individual growth and development.
