College Description
Harcum College provides an educational foundation and environment for learning that promotes academic, professional, and personal growth of its students.  It is a two-year, private, fully accredited, residential and commuter college committed to the education of women.

Harcum's programs, internships, and services promote academic success, professional accomplishment, leadership opportunities, and lifelong learning.  Harcum's distinction is its emphasis on attention to students' individual needs and practical, hands-on internships.  Through extracurricular involvement, both on and off campus, students are encouraged to expand and share their knowledge and skills and to serve their communities.

Edith Hatcher Harcum and her husband Marvin Harcum founded Harcum in 1915.  It was their vision was to build a college of higher learning for women seeking financial and intellectual independence.  Since then, Harcum College has been providing contemporary, career-oriented education supported by strong liberal arts foundation.  Harcum graduates find employment in their fields or transfer on to four-year colleges and universities.   Harcum was the first college in Pennsylvania to award the Associate in Arts and Associate in Science degrees.  Today, Harcum is still the only two-year, private women's college in Pennsylvania.

Academic Life
Harcum's academic programs are diverse and distributed within three broad categories: health-sciences; liberal arts and sciences; and business and professional studies.  Harcum graduates are prepared to immediately embark on careers or further their studies by transferring into a four-year institution.

Associate in Arts degree: Child study/exceptional children and Liberal Studies.

Associate in Science degree: Allied Health Science; Animal Center Management; Business Administration; Biotechnology, which offers the option of transferring to Thomas Jefferson University's B.S. degree program; Computer Information Systems; Expanded Functions Dental Assisting; Dental Hygiene; Fashion Design; Hospitality and Tourism; Illustration and Graphic Design, Interior Design; Medical Laboratory Technician; Occupational Therapy Assistant; Physical Therapist Assistant; Retail Merchandising;  and Veterinary Technology.

Credit One-Year Certificates: Accelerated Computer Accounting; Computer Graphics Specialist; Dental Assisting; Expanded Functions Dental Assisting; Healthcare Practice Management.

Transfer Arrangements: The Career and Transfer Services staff assists students in preparing for transfer to a four-year institution.  Harcum students have been accepted by more than 200 colleges and universities nationwide and abroad.  Harcum has close relationships with many colleges and a growing number of articulation agreements with some that enable students to transfer without loss of academic credit.

Internship and Co-op Programs: Most of Harcum's programs require an internship as part of the curriculum.  Students spend a period of time gaining valuable work experience in a workplace appropriate to their program, where they apply the knowledge they have acquired in the classroom.  Many students subsequently receive job offers from their internship sponsors.

Special Programs and Services:  The College offers a number of special programs to assist students in succeeding at college.  Early Entry is a five-week summer program which gives students an opportunity to adjust to college life while strengthening their academic preparation in reading, writing, math, and other areas.  Achieving Individual Motivation for Success (A.I.M.) develops academic and personal skills, cultural awareness, career plans and lifelong learning tools for students who have disabilities, are economically disadvantaged, or are first-generation college attendees.  The Personalized Learning Strategies (P.L.U.S.) program assists students with documented learning differences.  The English Language Academy offers full- and part-time instruction in English as a Second Language.  The Developmental Program provides courses to strengthen skills in English, math, and reading.  The Pre-Professional Health Track is a one-year program designed to prepare students academically for the occupational therapy assistant, physical therapist assistant, or dental hygiene programs.  Independent study is offered for students who want to study a topic that deeply interests them.  A qualified, conscientious instructor guides students in their study, independent of regular classroom attendance.  Periodic meetings and discussion seminars are held.  The Center for Student Development and Counseling offers personal and individualized career and academic counseling.  In conjunction with the women's studies program, a Women's Resource Center has been established.  An honors curriculum offers students with excellent achievement in high school the opportunity to participate in special honors-level classes and projects in many of the programs.

Continuing Education Programs:  The College's Continuing Education Division offers programs year-round.  Courses are offered for professional development and personal enrichment.  It is possible to earn an associate degree in the evening in interior design, occupational therapy assistant, physical therapist assistant, and veterinary technology.  One-year certificate programs also are offered.  Like many women's colleges, Harcum's evening and continuing education division is co-educational.

Financial Aid
Harcum is committed to providing access to higher education by offering financial aid counseling.  More than 60 percent of students at Harcum receive some form of financial aid.  Available aid includes Harcum grants-in-aid, scholarships, Federal Pell Grants, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants, state grants, Federal Perkins Loans, and Federal Work-Study Program awards.  Applications for Financial Aid should be filed before April 15 for fall enrollment.  Harcum strives to make a college education as affordable as possible, all students are strongly encouraged to apply.

Campus Life
Harcum gives you full support throughout your time here and even after you graduate.  At the Center for Student Development and Counseling, our counselors are there to give a hand with everything from advice on balancing your schedule to resolving a personal problem.  We also have academic tutors to help you with course work when you need it.

The Harcum College Women's Resource Center is also designed to assist you by providing information you can access any time about women's issues.  It's a great place to expand your knowledge of the opportunities and resources available to women.

Students at Harcum have the option to live on campus in the residence halls, which is a great way to make friends and put yourself in the middle of everything that is happening on campus.  The residence hall staff plans programs and events such as seminars and discussion groups on all sorts of topics from study skills to current events as well as stress-buster pizza parties.

You'll quickly feel at home at Harcum College.  Even the students who commute say they don't feel like outsiders.  As a small college community with about 700 students and 40 faculty members, you'll quickly find that you recognize many friendly faces all over campus.

Student Activities
It's so easy to get involved on campus-Harcum has clubs and organizations for students with many different interests, plus intercollegiate and intramural teams including badminton, basketball, softball, tennis, volleyball, and soccer.  The Harcum Bears compete in the Pennsylvania Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women and the Eastern Pennsylvania Collegiate Conference.

Students make their mark on campus, by joining one of more of the twenty clubs on campus such as the student newspaper, yearbook, the Organization for Animal Technician Students or the Student American Dental Hygienists Association.  The College has a chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, the national honor society for two-year colleges, and Chi Alpha Epsilon, a national honor society for A.I.M. students.

We also organize many community service activities and events.  Students participate in volunteer projects on and off campus such as the Parents and Children Learning Together (PACT), Peer Tutoring, Clothing Drives and Earth Day.
