Gordon College
255 Grapevine Road
Wenham, Massachusetts 01984
Gordon's campus (including Frost Hall, pictured here) was once the estate of financier Frederick Prince.
College Description
Gordon College is the only nondenominational Christian liberal arts college in New England. Our scenic campus is located 25 miles north of Boston, just three miles from the Atlantic Coast. ð Founded in Boston in 1889 by a small group of Christians who recognized the need for the church and society to have educated leadership, Gordon today strives to graduate men and women distinguished by Christian character and intellectual maturity with a willingness to serve others and accept leadership roles worldwide. ð Students from 40 states and 14 countries are enrolled at Gordon, giving the school an international flavor while retaining the personal touch only a college of 1,300 students can provide.
Academic Life
We offer a wide variety of traditional and nontraditional academic opportunities. Gordon offers 32 major courses of study, including education, economics, biology, sociology and social work, English, Biblical and theological studies and youth ministries.ð A Master of Education program was added in 1996. ð Besides on-campus academic services like the Academic Support Center, which provides small-group support for some of the college's core classes and tutors in a variety of areas, Gordon has a large network of off-campus programs designed to expand the horizons of our students. ð These programs include Allied Health Science, which prepares students for study in the health field through an agreement with Thomas Jefferson University College of Allied Health Science in Philadelphia. Students may also take part in the American Studies Program, a program that allows students to integrate faith, learning and living in work settings like Washington, D.C., and the news media. ð There are nearly 20 other programs in which students may spend a semester or a year studying in France, Russia, Britain, Israel or in the United States, learning about everything from filmmaking to biology.
Campus Life
We are committed to residence life as a major component of the collegiate experience. Gordon stresses fellowship and community. With this in mind, we offer many concerts, athletic events, spiritual growth retreats and social activities on campus each year. ð With its proximity to Boston and the many social and spiritual activities available in the North Shore area, campus groups often make trips into the city and to northern New England to take advantage of this area's history, natural beauty, national reputation and spiritual richness. ð Students are also encouraged to accept leadership opportunities in the Student Association, student ministries, campus events planning and many other student initiated and operated groups. ð The college is known for its outreach to the North Shore. In the most recently completed academic year, it is estimated that 800 students were actively involved in the 25 ongoing student ministries.
Facilities and Resources
The campus is picturesque, featuring walking trails, lakes and open spaces. It is near a major highway and only 30 minutes from Boston. ð The newest building is the Bennett Athletic and Recreation Center, which opened in the fall of 1996. This 74,000-square-foot facility provides many amenities, including a pool, indoor track and racquetball courts. The Gordon intramural sports program, which accommodates hundreds of students at all levels of ability, also uses the Bennett Center. ð The centerpiece of the campus is the A.J. Gordon Memorial Chapel. Named after the school's founder, the chapel seats 1,600 and is considered one of the best venues in New England north of Boston. It is used for religious, cocurricular and community events. ð Gordon's library has nearly 280,000 volumes and an extensive computer network, giving students access to many colleges and universities in eastern Massachusetts. ð All of the college's dormitories are wired to provide students free access to the Internet, if they so desire. Other technology is also available. Gordon buildings are accessible to the disabled, with many of the newer housing buildings providing audiovisual alarms for hearing-impaired students.
Athletics/Sports
The Gordon College Fighting Scots are members of the NCAA Division III. Gordon has seven varsity sports for women and six for men and is known for fielding competitive teams that practice good sportsmanship. ð Women's varsity sports are field hockey, volleyball, basketball, softball, tennis, soccer and cross country. Men's varsity sports include soccer, cross country, basketball, tennis, baseball and lacrosse. ð The lacrosse program is considered by many to be a program on the rise, with two players rated among the 10 best in the nation in NCAA Division III in 1997. The volleyball team is regularly ranked in the top 10 in the New England region. ð All students are encouraged to take part in sports, as the college believes physical development is a vital aspect of one's total development.
Financial Aid
Gordon College recognizes that the expenses of an education can be burdensome, so we are committed to helping students finance their education as much as we possibly can. Last year more than $8.5 million was awarded in scholarships and grants by the college to Gordon students. ð Last year, 89 percent of the students at Gordon received financial aid apart from student loans. For freshmen entering at that time, the average aid package for scholarships and grants was $7,792. ð Thanks to the generosity of many of our alumni, more than 125 endowed scholarships and annual gifts are available. Students may also access Pell Grants, state scholarships and grants, private scholarships and grants, ROTC Scholarships, academic merit scholarships or international student aid.
Admission Requirements
Gordon students come from a wide variety of backgrounds, ranging from large public schools in the United States to home schools and foreign schools. The admission process is somewhat flexible, but it is recommended that students who apply should rank in the top one-half of their class and take the SAT. ð The school considers the written essay, high school and religious activities, letters of recommendation, school records, test scores and work experience of the candidate. An admissions interview is required; it can be conducted on campus or off campus. ð On the average, applicants accepted scored 567 on the verbal portion of the SAT and 547 on the math portion. More than 85 percent of those accepted into Gordon ranked in the top 50 percent of their high school class. ð A nonrefundable application fee of $40 is charged. ð The application deadline for fall admission is March 15. An applicant must accept the offer of admission by May 1. Admission notification is done on a rolling basis. ð Students desiring spring admission must apply by December 1.
