Georgian Court College
900 Lakewood Avenue
Lakewood, NJ 08701

With the campus as your classroom, Georgian Court College brings the biology lab into the great and in our case historic outdoors.
College Overview
Georgian Court College, founded by the Sisters of Mercy of New Jersey, began in 1908 as a liberal arts college for young women. The current undergraduate enrollment in the women's college is 1,013. In 1976, the College expanded to include a Graduate School of Education. In 1979, the coeducational Undergraduate Evening Division was established to provide both men and women the means to pursue a baccalaureate degree while being involved in full- or part-time employment; it now enrolls 475 students. The College's strong academic program aims not merely to educate competent professionals but, more importantly, to develop students' potential and to deepen their understanding of society and commitment to its future. Georgian Court students follow a curriculum broad enough to be truly liberal, yet specialized enough to provide preparation in depth for further study and future careers. The mission of Georgian Court is the education of creative and responsible leaders who have a firm sense of moral, spiritual, and intellectual values.
Academic Life
The Bachelor of Arts degree is awarded in art, art history, biology, chemistry, English, French, history, humanities, mathematics, music, physics, psychology, religious studies, sociology, Spanish, and special education. The Bachelor of Fine Arts is awarded in general fine arts and graphic design/illustration. The Bachelor of Science degree is awarded in accounting, biochemistry, biology, business administration, chemistry, and physics. Students planning a career in social work can obtain the Bachelor of Social Work degree.
Teacher certification programs in elementary education, subject areas (N-12), and special education are available at Georgian Court.
Campus Life
The College's beautifully landscaped 150-acre campus on the former George Jay Gould estate provides an impressive setting for college life. The campus has seventeen buildings. The majority of the College's students come from New Jersey. A small percentage come from surrounding states and other countries. Twenty-two percent of the students enrolled in the women's college are resident students. St. Joseph Hall and Maria Hall provide private or semiprivate dormitory rooms situated around comfortable lounges. Kitchenettes are located on each floor.
Both resident and commuting students participate in a wide variety of activities, including numerous cultural and social functions. There are a number of College-sponsored trips to New York and Philadelphia to visit museums, attend the theater, and shop. In addition, social activities are planned on campus, with invitations extended to area colleges. The Patrick and Julia Gavan Student Lounge is the gathering place for students in all divisions. Seasonal parties, live entertainment, and special events make the student lounge a popular place to be. There are also thirty-five cultural, educational, honorary, and service-oriented clubs and organizations. Two student publications provide opportunities for students who enjoy photography or writing. For students who are musically inclined, the Court Singers, Court Notes, and the Georgian Court College Concert Band provide opportunities. Women's intercollegiate competition is offered in basketball, cross-country, soccer, and softball. The varsity teams compete in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics and the Central Atlantic College Conference. The facilities at Georgian Court include a heated swimming pool, tennis courts, and landscaped acreage ideally suited for jogging and bicycling.
The Counseling Center staff assists students in adjusting to college life, helps them to budget their time, gives seminars on leadership and personal growth, and provides individual and group counseling and psychotherapy in addition to referral services. Career counseling and placement services are also offered to all students and alumni. Students needing extra assistance with course work may take advantage of the tutorial aides available through Student Support Services. The Health Center, staffed by registered nurses throughout the day and evening, provides general health care and arranges for medical treatment as needed. Campus ministers are available to provide spiritual counseling. The Eucharistic Liturgy is offered on campus. In addition, the Lakewood area has a wide variety of churches and synagogues to serve non-Catholic students. The Learning Center (TLC) is an assistance program designed to provide an environment for students with mild to moderate learning disabilities. Emphasis is placed on developing self-help strategies and study techniques.
Location
Bordering the north shore of Lake Carasaljo, the campus is situated in a quiet, residential neighborhood of Lakewood, New Jersey. Centrally located in the state, Georgian Court is convenient to the Route 9 corridor, the Garden State Parkway, and Interstate 195. New York City, Philadelphia, and Atlantic City are each less than 1 1/2 hours by car from the campus. The distance to the seashore is approximately 10 miles.
Facilities and Resources
The Arts and Science Center contains classrooms, seminar rooms, offices, studios for the fine arts, the Little Theatre, a radioisotope laboratory, a computer laboratory, an anthropology laboratory, and modern laboratories and equipment for instruction and research in the biological, chemical, and physical sciences. The library houses a collection of more than 194,000 books and other materials in print and nonprint format, including 1,200 periodical titles. It has a fully automated card catalog, CD-ROM databases, and a demonstration classroom with a multimedia computer and LCD panel. Internet provides students with worldwide access to research information and the ability to communicate online with 10 million other users throughout the globe. Students using a networked computer anywhere on campus can access the library. Residence halls are wired for room telephones, and data lines are connected by fiber-optic cable. The library also houses an inviting reading room, a reference room, a student lounge, and office areas. Study carrels and individual audiovisual booths are available. The library is open 72 hours weekly, and reference services are provided at all times. Hamilton Hall houses the Learning Center and the program in special education.
Costs
Tuition for the 1998-99 academic year is $11,446. Residence and board are $3750 (seven-day meal plan) or $3600 (five-day meal plan).
Athletics/Sports
Athletics are an important part of student life on campus. Four intercollegiate sports (basketball, cross country, soccer and softball) and a variety of recreational activities - including basketball, bowling, weight training, jogging/walking clubs, swimming, tennis and volleyball - enhance the college experience. Georgian Court College competes in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and is a member of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC). Past team success include CACC Champions (basketball, soccer) and Conference Champions (cross country and softball).
The Georgian Court College "Casino" building provides the setting for the athletic center. The Casino building retains the name given it by the original owners that described a multipurpose sporting and entertainment facility. It houses a weight-training room, aerobics area, swimming pool, basketball court, tennis court, a small bowling alley and outdoor tennis courts. Across from the Casino are the softball and soccer fields.
Financial Aid
Georgian Court College has endeavored to keep the cost of attending an independent college affordable. A large percentage of its students receive financial assistance. Financial aid consists of all scholarships, grants, loans, or campus jobs offered to the applicant to help meet education-related expenses. Eligible students may be aided through a combination of these items, called a financial aid package. Georgian Court offers both need-based and non-need financial aid. For example, some scholarships are granted on the basis of a superior academic record, College Board and ACT scores, and financial need; other scholarships are based on academic excellence only. Athletics grants of variable amounts are available to students who qualify for admission and demonstrate the ability to participate in the sports program while advancing their college career. Georgian Court financial aid is usually available for U.S. citizens and eligible noncitizens. The College also participates in the New Jersey Educational Opportunity Fund program. In order to be considered for any financial aid, all students must submit a Georgian Court financial aid form to the Financial Aid Office. All applicants must also submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This analysis indicates the student's degree of financial need. The data are evaluated by the Financial Aid Committee, beginning February 15. An award letter and acceptance statement are then sent to students who qualify for aid, indicating the assistance provided to meet the student's financial need. Acceptance statements must be returned to the Financial Aid Office to finalize the awards. Financial aid information is included in the viewbook.
Admission Requirements
Georgian Court College welcomes applications from students who desire a liberal arts education and have the necessary qualifications to benefit from the College's program. Entrance is based on individual merit. The high school record of achievement is of primary importance and must reflect solid performance in a college-preparatory program. Candidates for admission must have completed 16 academic (Carnegie) units. The majority of students attending Georgian Court ranked in the upper half of their senior class in high school. All candidates are required to take the SAT I or ACT, preferably by December of the senior year. Further consideration is given to the applicant's extracurricular activities and letters of recommendation submitted by teachers, counselors, employers, or similarly qualified people. A campus interview is highly recommended. The interview focuses primarily on a discussion of the student's experiences and interests and allows the interviewer to explain the College's current offerings. A guided tour of the campus is also offered.
Well-qualified applicants whose first choice is Georgian Court College and who apply no later than November 15 may be considered for early decision. A mature, well-qualified student who wishes to enter college after three years of high school may apply for early entrance. Transfer students are accepted into the freshman, sophomore, and junior classes for the fall and spring semesters. All students must be in good standing at their former college. Applicants with fewer than 24 credits must fulfill all requirements for admission to the freshman class. International students in need of an I-20 student visa must present official documents at least six months prior to the semester's start and must have a minimum TOEFL score of 550. International students must complete a GCC financial support form and should be prepared to assume full financial responsibility for educational and personal expenses in the United States.
