Flagler College
Flagler College's main building is the historic Hotel Ponce de Leon in St. Augustine, Florida.

College Description
Founded in 1968 as a memorial to Henry M. Flagler, industrialist, oil magnate, land developer, and railroad pioneer, Flagler College's mission is to offer a rigorous academic program in a supportive environment at a cost far below that of similar institutions. The College is located in the oldest city in the United States on the northeast coast of Florida, midway between Jacksonville and Daytona Beach, four miles from the Atlantic Ocean. Flagler is a private, independent college that offers a four-year program leading to the baccalaureate degree in carefully selected preprofessional and liberal studies. The focal point of the campus is Ponce de Leon Hall, formerly a famous resort hotel. Described as a masterpiece of American architecture, the Ponce de Leon is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. With enrollment strictly limited to 1,500 students, Flagler strives to develop the qualities that smallness fosters. These qualities include, but are not limited to, civility, integrity, loyalty, dependability, and affection. An atmosphere of friendliness and respect prevails throughout the College. Thirty-seven states and fifteen countries are represented in the student body; fifty-six percent of the students are residents of the state of Florida. Flagler serves a traditional college-age student population, the majority of whom live in the College's residence halls. The students indicate that strength of academics, cost, size, and location are the major reasons for their choosing Flagler.

Academic Life
The principal focus of the College's academic program is undergraduate education in carefully selected major and minor fields of study. Flagler provides a challenging and supportive environment in which students are to acquire knowledge, exercise good citizenship, and adhere to high ethical standards. Teaching is central to the College's mission, along with individual advisement and counseling of students. It is the purpose of Flagler's academic program to provide opportunities for general and specialized learning, to assist students in preparing for careers, and to aid students in pursuing graduate and professional studies. The six most popular programs at Flagler are education, business administration and accounting, psychology, graphic design and fine art, communication, and sport management. The College is especially well-known for its outstanding program in deaf education. Students majoring in deaf education have the benefit of working with the faculty and students at the Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind (FSDB), the largest school of its type in the nation. The FSDB is located in St. Augustine, approximately two miles from the College campus.

Campus Life
Famous as a tourist center, rich in history, and beautifully maintained in all its storied charm, St. Augustine provides an attractive environment for a liberal arts college. Community resources complement the programs offered by the College. Flagler is an important part of the St. Augustine community and seeks to use the educational, cultural, and recreational resources of the community to supplement and enhance the quality of life and the quality of education at the College. Flagler offers a wide range of extracurricular activities that are designed to enrich the student socially, culturally, and physically. Activities include student government, working on a college newspaper, performing in a theatrical production, or attending College-sponsored movies, lectures, dances, or concerts throughout the year. Other popular activities include biking around town, sunning at the pool, surfing at the beach, competing in a sports event or being a spectator, and spending time in the restoration area.

Facilities and Resources
Flagler's campus surrounds historic Ponce de Leon Hall, which now serves as a residence hall for 500 students and contains the dining hall, student center, infirmary, and some administrative offices. Connected to Ponce de Leon Hall is Kenan Hall, a multipurpose academic facility containing classrooms, seminar rooms, laboratories, and faculty offices. The William L. Proctor Library is a vital educational center on the Flagler College campus. The library provides all services common to a research library, such as reference service, bibliographic instruction, computer-based search services, interlibrary loan service, and audiovisual materials and equipment. In addition, the Proctor Library houses an Internet computer lab, lecture rooms, group study rooms, an open access computer lab, the graphic design studio/computer lab, a Macintosh lab, two PC labs, and several offices.

Sports/ VarsityAthletics
Athletics play an important role in campus life. For men, intercollegiate sports include baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, and tennis. Intercollegiate sports for women are basketball, cross country, soccer, tennis, and volleyball. A lively intramural sports program is available for both men and women. Most notable among Flagler's athletic achievements are the national championships won in 1977 and 1986 by the men's tennis team, and the unprecedented five consecutive national championships won from 1987 through 1991 by the women's tennis team. Athletic facilities on campus include a gymnasium with dance and weight training areas, eight lighted tennis courts, and an outdoor swimming pool. A 19-acre athletic field is located two miles from campus and includes playing fields for baseball, soccer, and intramural activities.

Financial Aid
Financial aid is awarded primarily on the basis of proven need, as demonstrated by information provided by the student on the College application for aid and the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Approximately three fourths of Flagler's students receive some type of financial aid. Students who are legal residents of the state for a period of one year or more are eligible to receive the Florida Resident Access Grant (FRAG). Funds for the FRAG are appropriated through the state legislature. For the 1997-98 academic year, the FRAG amounts to $1,725 per student and the grant is not based on financial need or academic merit.

Admission Requirements
The high school record is the most important factor in determining admission to the College. In general, students should have completed four years of English, three years of mathematics (two years of algebra and one of plane geometry), two years of natural sciences (one laboratory science), and four years of social studies and other academic electives. Also taken into consideration are the student's SAT or ACT scores, an essay, extracurricular activities, recommendations, an interview (interviews are recommended but not required), and the student's motivation, initiative, seriousness of purpose, and leadership potential. In the admission process, preference is given to students who have identified Flagler as their first choice college. An Early Decision Plan is offered for students who wish to declare Flagler as their first choice college. Students applying under the Early Decision Plan will have their applications acted on prior to Regular Decision applicants. The deadline for filing a Regular Decision application is March 1.
