Elon Univesity
Elon, North Carolina

Overview
Elon was founded in 1889 by the United Church of Christ and remains a church-related institution. The beautiful 575-acre campus is graced by ancient oak trees, well-kept lawns, brick sidewalks, a fountain, and two lakes. Visitors to Elon's campus often remark on the friendliness of the people and the strong sense of community. Elon is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. At the graduate level, it offers master's degrees in business administration and education, as well as a Doctor of Physical Therapy (D.P.T.) program.

With a student body of 4,500, Elon offers the opportunities and facilities of a university in a close-knit community atmosphere. Since its founding in 1889, Elon has grown to be a nationally recognized institution. Seventy percent of Elon's students come from out of state, and forty-seven states and thirty-six nations are represented in the student body. Student satisfaction is consistently high: 87 percent of students eligible to return to Elon do so.

In addition to a challenging academic curriculum, Elon encourages students to participate in five programs known as the Elon Experiences: student undergraduate research, study abroad, internships, service learning, and leadership. Elon is ranked number one nationally among comparable institutions for the percentage of students who participate in study-abroad programs. Seventy-five percent of Elon graduates complete internships, compared to approximately 33 percent nationally, and approximately 88 percent of Elon students volunteer in the community. Students can record their participation on an Elon Experiences transcript, which is issued as a companion to the traditional academic transcript.

Through the Elon Career Center, students can enroll in 1-credit-hour courses such as Choosing a Major and Securing a Job. The center also sponsors a Transition Tactics mentoring program, job fairs, and on-campus interviews with employers and helps students arrange internships and cooperative education experiences. More than 92 percent of the students who work with the Career Center have jobs within six to nine months of their graduation.

Location and Community
Elon's historic campus is located in the beautiful Piedmont region of North Carolina, adjacent to Burlington, a town of 50,000. Elon is just 30 minutes from Greensboro and within an hour's drive of major universities—Wake Forest, UNC-Chapel Hill, Duke, and North Carolina State. The 575-acre campus was recently named one of the most beautiful in the nation by The Princeton Review. Beaches and mountains are only 3½ hours away by car. Major bus, train, and airline transportation is nearby. Interstate 85/40 is within 2½ miles of the campus.

Academic Life
Elon's dynamic academic program is grounded in the arts and sciences and distinguished by a philosophy of learning that integrates academic and experiential activities. The curriculum features a general studies core in a 4-hour course design. Innovative teaching methods encourage independent thinking and active learning, especially through the Elon Experiences, a program that promotes the values of independent learning through research, intercultural understanding, work experience, volunteer service, and leadership. Students complete 132 hours of credit for the bachelor's degree.

Academic scholarship programs, known as the Elon Fellows programs, feature specialized courses, study/travel grants, mentor relationships, and some paid internships and research assistantships, as well as additional scholarships for selected participants. Programs include Elon College (the College of Arts and Sciences) Fellows, Honors Fellows, Journalism/Communications Fellows, North Carolina Teaching Fellows, Jefferson Pilot Business Fellows, and the Freshman Leadership Fellows.

Elon operates on a 4-1-4 academic calendar consisting of two 4-month semesters of classwork divided by a one-month winter term during January. The winter term allows students to gain added experience through additional course work, internships, study abroad, special research, or cooperative education programs in industry.

Elon has 252 full-time and 72 part-time faculty members. Eighty-five percent have earned the highest degree in their field. The primary emphasis is on teaching, although faculty members also participate in research. Faculty members are known for their mentoring relationship with students. A 15:1 student-faculty ratio and an average class size of 22 students promote this high level of faculty participation in student learning.

Elon offers numerous opportunities for international study/travel: a semester or year in places such as Argentina, Australia, Chile, Costa Rica, Denmark, Ecuador, England, France, Ghana, Japan, Scotland, Spain, or Sweden for the same tuition, room, and board cost as at Elon; winter term study/tours to Australia and Europe and countries such as Belize, Costa Rica, England, Ghana, Greece, Italy, Mexico, and New Zealand; summer programs in England, Greece, Hungary, and India; and exchange programs with universities in Japan and Sweden. In addition, the Office of International Programs assists students in joining study-abroad programs offered by other universities. Each year, more than 60 percent of the graduates have participated in a study-abroad experience, compared to 2 percent of college students nationwide.
