College Description
Established as a private academy in 1857, Edinboro University has continued to be one of the leading educational institutions in Pennsylvania. After 125 years of service, Edinboro experienced its most significant change on July 1, 1983, when the College became Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, a member of the State System of Higher Education. Located in a resort community in northwestern Pennsylvania, the University is one of the most attractive campuses in the Commonwealth. It is within 100 miles of the educational and cultural centers of Buffalo, Cleveland and Pittsburgh and is easily accessible from all directions by interstates 79, 80 and 90.
The University is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools and specific programs are accredited by the National League of Nursing, the American Dietetic Association, the Council on Social Work Education, and the Pennsylvania Department of Education. The University maintains appropriate discipline approvals for its programs in music, nursing, nutrition, rehabilitation counseling, and speech and hearing and is associated with several professional organizations.
6,500 undergraduate and 700 graduate students attend Edinboro. The student population is racially and geographically diverse and includes students from throughout the United States, as well as from over 30 countries around the world.
Academic Life
Edinboro University awards Associate of Applied Science, Associate of Arts, Associate of Engineering Technology, Associate of Science, Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Science in Education degrees, which permit majoring in 100 areas of concentration and minors in 52 areas of specialization. The most popular majors include Accounting, Art (13 tracks including Animation, Cinema, Graphic Arts, Textile Design), Business (including Financial Services, International Business, Marketing), Communications (Radio-T.V. Broadcasting), Computer Science, Criminal Justice, Education (Elementary, Secondary and Special Education), 3-2 Engineering, Environmental Science, Nursing, Pre-Professional Studies, Political Science, Psychology, Social Work and Speech and Hearing Disorders.
Edinboro offers learning and physical disability services, special services for the adult learner, internships, clinical experience, independent study, summer study abroad, honors program for academically gifted, referral directories of business, schools, social agencies and overseas opportunities are on file. Special programs are available such as: Teacher Certification for applicants with a bachelors degree who want to earn credits for certification to teach in the public schools; a one-year innovative nursing program for applicants with a bachelor's degree in another area of study; an Army Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) program.
Campus Life
Numerous clubs, organizations, special interest groups, and teams have been formed at Edinboro to provide students with activities outside the classroom. Included are more than 50 groups and clubs, musical organizations, service and professional organizations, and more than 20 fraternities and sororities, in addition to extensive intramural and intercollegiate athletic programs for both men and women. Edinboro's Center for Outdoor Recreation Experiences (CORE) provides students with alternatives for their free time. All necessary equipment is available for wilderness types of recreation including skiing, hiking and rafting. The University Cultural Series includes concerts, ballets, symphonies, lectures, art exhibits, and a foreign film series. Each year the Student Government Association's Special Programs Committee prepares a Calendar of Events to reflect the interests of a diverse student population. These include first-run movies, comedians, game shows, concerts, dances, and special holiday events. Several living-learning areas in the residence halls have been established to provide students with the same major to live in the same area and participate in programs outside the classroom which are related to one's field of study.
Facilities and Resources
The Edinboro campus consists of 585 acres and includes more than forty buildings, tennis courts, a bookstore, two art galleries, football stadium, all-weather track, health center, bank, planetarium, solar observatory, speech and hearing clinic, a gazebo, and a five-acre lake. Serving as the focal point for the campus is the modern seven-story Baron-Forness Library. More extensive than all other college libraries in northwestern Pennsylvania combined, it contains more than 440,000 bound volumes and 1.2 million microform units. Also available to students is an on-line searching system, a reading machine for the visually impaired, and an interlibrary loan resource. Edinboro strives to create an environment within eight residence halls which supports a learning-centered environment where students come first. Seven network and two campus-wide servers, more than 1,400 Windows, Macintosh, and other types of computers, and 20 computer labs are available throughout campus. Edinboro offers the nation's third largest educational program for the physically disabled, including hearing and visually impaired and the learning disabled. All buildings are wheelchair accessible.
The Porreco Center serves as the site of day and evening classes, conferences and informal gatherings. This 27-acre Erie campus of Edinboro University provides a variety of both graduate and undergraduate course opportunities.
Athletics/Sports
The Fighting Scots compete in the Pennsylvania Conference and the National Collegiate Athletic Association, Division I and II in 17 intercollegiate sports. These include men's baseball, football, wrestling, and golf; men's and women's basketball, cross country, track, swimming, and tennis; and women's softball, soccer and volleyball. Sox Harrison Stadium, with a six-lane, 400-meter all-weather track seats 6,500 people. McComb Fieldhouse has a 4,000 seat gymnasium with three basketball courts, swimming pool with diving tank, wrestling rooms, weight room, sports medicine center, recquetball/handball courts, sauna, and locker rooms. The University Center has an indoor running track, saunas and steam rooms, weight room, racquetball and handball courts, and aerobics room.
Financial Aid
85% of students receive aid and the average financial aid package amount is $5,700. The types of financial aid offered by Edinboro University include student employment, loans, grants, and scholarships. In most cases, Pennsylvania State Grant and Free Application for Federal Student Aid forms are used to determine eligibility for these programs. Federal aid administered by the University is available for both the regular academic year and the summer sessions. The application deadline for upperclass students for these programs is normally May 1 for the following academic year. Freshmen may apply for aid upon acceptance by the University. Financial aid is also available through the University's ROTC program. Admission Requirements
Edinboro follows a rolling admissions policy which means decisions are reached on complete applications soon after all necessary materials are received by the University. These include $25 application fee, application form, secondary school transcripts or G.E.D., SAT I or ACT results. Transfer students from other postsecondary institutions must file grade transcripts from each institution attended. International students must submit a TOEFL score and affidavit of financial support. Students will usually be informed of the admissions decision approximately three to four weeks after the Admissions Office receives the complete application and accompanying materials. High school students may apply anytime after July 1, following their junior year. Non-traditional, adult students, do not need to submit SAT or ACT scores, but are asked to submit a resume of employment history and activities since high school graduation.
