Dowling College
Idle Hour Boulevard
Oakdale, New York 11769-1999
The picturesque Dowling riverside campus.
College Description
Dowling College is The Personal College, committed to an environment for learning that recognizes and provides for the development of each student's potential. Small class sizes (none more than forty), one-on-one student-teacher interaction, and individual assessment and counseling services ensure that each student benefits from the College's special philosophy. An independent four-year comprehensive liberal arts college with a variety of career-oriented programs, Dowling serves the educational needs of more than 6,046 full- and part-time students through a variety of day, evening, and weekend class choices. Innovative and flexible class scheduling is just one of the many reasons students choose Dowling for the pursuit of their undergraduate degrees. The College's picturesque riverside campus is located on the former Idle Hour estate of William K. Vanderbilt on the South Shore of Long Island, New York, offering students an unusual blend of modern facilities and a historic setting. Dowling's Oakdale location on Long Island's South Shore provides easy access by car, train, or bus to New York City as well as prime areas of Long Island. The College also has centers in Riverhead, Long Island; at the World Trade Institute in New York City; and at the College of Aeronautics in Flushing, Queens.
Academic Life
Dowling's wide array of baccalaureate degree programs reflects its commitment to educating each individual 'across the curriculum. Undergraduates are required to build their degree programs on a wide base of liberal arts and science courses, ensuring that the foundation of their education is built upon a broad spectrum of knowledge. While providing for this strong foundation, Dowling also enables its students to incorporate a career-oriented component into all of its academic programs. Dowling operates on a spring and fall semester calendar, with shorter intensive terms offered in winter and summer. Students may earn credits that are applicable toward degree programs during any term. Bachelor's degrees require a minimum of 120 credits of college work. For the B.A., at least 90 credits must be in the liberal arts and sciences. For the B.S. and B.B.A. degrees, at least 60 credits must be taken in the liberal arts and sciences. All baccalaureate degree programs are available on day and evening schedules. The B.S. in professional liberal studies is also available in an accelerated weekend program. The Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences divisions provide students with a comprehensive knowledge of the forces that shape the world. The humanities program gives students an opportunity to develop their ability to organize and present ideas clearly and persuasively. Through a survey of the social sciences, students acquire a picture of themselves in relation to the psychosocial factors at work in society. Located in the 'Cradle of Aviation,' as Long Island is known, Dowling College is one of a few colleges in the nation offering academic programs in aeronautics and the first to offer a baccalaureate degree in transportation planning and management. Students enrolled in the aeronautics program may choose from six different Bachelor of Science degree concentrations. For those who wish to learn to fly, flight-training courses are offered. Completion of these courses leads to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Private, Commercial, and Certified Flight Instructor licenses and the Instrument and Multi-engine ratings.
Campus Life
Dowling is committed to creating a community environment. Students participate in the more than twenty-five clubs and organizations on campus and in ten intercollegiate sports programs. Students can also attend brown-bag lunches held periodically with the president or provost/dean of students. Students benefit from many trustee-sponsored projects and scholarships as well. A focal point of the campus is Max and Clara Fortunoff Hall. This 110-room mansion, built at the turn of the century, houses administrative and faculty offices, as well as magnificent ceremonial spaces for special events. Adjacent to the mansion is the Marjorie Fortunoff Mayrock Conservatory, a remarkable cast-iron and glass structure that serves as the College's cultural centerpiece as well as an informal lounge area, and the Kramer Science Center, a state-of-the-art facility. The Lion's Den, a leisure-time meeting place for students, is located in the Gerald and Rose Mary Curtin Student Center.

Facilities and Resources
The Racanelli Center for Learning Resources (LRC), a modern four-story complex, houses the College's library, the Instructional Media Center, the Academic Computing Center, classrooms, meeting and reception rooms, faculty offices, and the Academic Support Services Center. Created through the generosity of Richard Hausman, former Dowling College Trustee and Chairman of the Board, the Peter Hausman Resource Center, also located in the LRC, provides physically handicapped students with a wide range of services. The National Aviation and Transportation Center, located at Brookhaven Calabro Airport, houses the School of Aviation and Transportation as well as a state-of-the-art 3-D virtual reality laboratory and human factors and meteorology laboratories. Other academic facilities on the Oakdale campus are the Education Building, the Performing Arts Center, the Visual Arts Center, and the Gerald and Rose Mary Curtin Student Center.

Sports/Varsity Athletics
Dowling College is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division II, the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference, and the New York Collegiate Athletic Conference. Dowling's intercollegiate teams include a flying team, the Lion Escadrille, and a crew team.

Major sources of aid include the Tuition Assistance Program, Federal Pell Grants, Federal Work-Study, and Dowling Grants-in-Aid. A broad range of scholarships, academic and endowed, is also available. More than 20 percent of the freshmen and transfer students entering Dowling in the past year received scholarships. Dowling College offers innovative strategies to assist students in all aspects of financing their education, including individualized counseling sessions and a personalized written guide of financing options.
