Cumberland College
The beautiful campus consists of 30 buildings on 40 acres

College Description / Campus Visit
Cumberland College is a private, liberal arts college, founded in 1889, affiliated with the Kentucky Baptist Convention. The campus is located in the southeastern part of the state, just off Interstate 75, 190 miles south of Cincinnati, Ohio, and 70 miles north of Knoxville, Tennessee. The beautiful campus consists of 30 buildings on 40 acres and attracts students from 38 states and 13 foreign countries. Cumberland is known for offering an outstanding, personal education in a Christian environment, at a very affordable cost. The individual help starts with the dedicated faculty, whose main reason for being at Cumberland is not to do research or write papers, but to give individual instruction in the classroom. This help continues with a strong advising program and tutoring center. The goal of the faculty is not only to send graduates out with knowledge, but to send them with the skills and values to use that knowledge effectively

Academic Life
The college offers over 40 majors and minors and 9 pre-professional programs leading to the Bachelor of Arts, the Bachelor of General Studies, the Bachelor of Music, the Bachelor of Science, and the Master of Arts in Education degrees. The broad, liberal arts program consists of 45 hours of general education courses leading to a total of 128 hours to graduate. The curriculum also includes leadership and community service requirements. Many of Cumberland's departments are well known throughout the country, including the biology and the chemistry departments, which prepare students in the areas of research and medically related programs, and the education department, which can boast of having several recent graduates being named teacher of the year in their respective states. Students may elect to become involved in the honors program, the study-abroad program, or an internship to further enrich their education.

Campus Life
The college offers a wide variety of activities for students, including over 40 active clubs and organizations. Ranging from honor societies to student government to a full course of intramural athletics, students find that there is sometimes too much to choose from. Two of the largest organizations on campus are the Baptist Student Union and the Campus Activity Board. Both provide activities and opportunities for students to be involved throughout the week and on weekends. Dormitory life is also active as students can be involved in a variety of opportunities, including dorm councils, devotions, and competitions. Cumberland also has a large, indoor swimming pool, a complete game room with a bowling alley, an indoor walking track, and a large gymnasium for students to use individually as well as in groups.

Facilities and Resources / Campus Map
The campus contains several buildings built within the last 10 years and blended with stately buildings that existed over 100 years ago. One recent addition, the Gibson Distance Learning Laboratory, allows our students access to people and places across the globe. The O. Wayne Rollins Center, built in 1990, contains our Cralle Chapel, a basketball arena, an indoor walking track, and additional classroom and office space. The college offers four dormitories for women and five for men, each arranged in its own unique style. Located just off campus are two new impressive facilities, the Cumberland Inn and Center for Leadership Studies and the James H. Taylor, II Stadium. The Inn contains a luxurious motel and restaurant as well as a museum. This facility is used as an outlet for student labor and a center for leadership and service studies. The stadium is billed as one of the finest small-college facilities around and accommodates the football, track, and soccer programs.

Athletics/Sports / Coaches Directory
Cumberland's varsity athletic teams compete in the Mid-South Conference of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). The college offers 11 sports for men: baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, judo, soccer, swimming, tennis, track, and wrestling; and 11 sports for women: basketball, cross country, fast pitch softball, golf, judo, soccer, swimming, tennis, track, volleyball, and wrestling. Several of these teams regularly compete for national titles, including a final four appearance by the men's basketball team and a National Christian College Athletic Association Championship for the men's wrestling program. The facilities include a modern basketball arena built in 1990 and new football, soccer, and track stadium completed in 1994. Work was recently completed on additional tennis courts and a new baseball stadium.

Financial Aid / Scholarships
The staff of the Financial Planning Office works with the students to insure that each student receives the aid for which he or she may be qualified. The office utilizes the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to determine financial need. Approximately 90% of all Cumberland students receive some form of financial assistance and share in over $15 million in different types of aid. All applicants are encouraged to apply for financial aid by completing the FAFSA by the priority filing date of March 15. Several merit-based scholarships are available, including Presidential Scholarships, Academic Scholarships, Leadership Grants, Christian Leadership Scholarships, and Community Service Scholarships. Many observe a April 1 deadline for application.

Admission Requirements / Application
All students who are completing or have received a high school diploma or GED are eligible to apply. The application process for incoming freshmen includes completing an application and one essay; submitting a letter of recommendation from a teacher, and one from a guidance counselor; receiving scores from either the ACT or SAT, and sending your high school transcript or GED results. Transfer students with less than 30 semester hours are required to submit transcripts and transfer eligibility forms from all colleges they have attended in addition to fulfilling the requirements for freshman admission. Transfer students with more than 30 semester hours must submit an application and one essay, submit one recommendation from someone other than a relative and send transcripts and transfer eligibility forms from all colleges attended. All students are evaluated by a combination of grades, ACT or SAT scores, recommendations, and the essay. Cumberland offers a rolling admissions policy.
