Culver-Stockton College
Canton, Missouri

Overview
Students at Culver-Stockton College (C-SC) receive a superb education that extends far beyond the classroom. The four-year experience at C-SC expands not only the student’s academic knowledge but also an awareness of the world in which they live. Besides achieving their academic goals, students receive an opportunity to develop their leadership skills, discover new interests, and form lasting relationships with classmates and faculty and staff members. These opportunities play a major part in the College’s goal of creating visions of success for each student.

C-SC was founded in 1853 as the first institution of higher learning west of the Mississippi River chartered expressly for coeducation. Affiliated with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), the College is personal (870 students) and provides a strong career-oriented education within a liberal arts setting.

Culver-Stockton College has more than 10,000 living alumni, many of whom have achieved distinction in the arts, government, medicine, law, education, and other professional fields. With more than 150 years of history, Culver-Stockton College moves into the twenty-first century as one of the truly distinctive small liberal arts colleges in the Midwest.

Culver-Stockton College is fully accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, the International Assembly for Collegiate Business Education, the National Association of Schools of Music, the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs, the National League of Nursing, and the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.

Location and Community
Canton, Missouri, a quaint town of 2,600 on the Mississippi River, sits in the rolling farmland of northeast Missouri. The College has close ties with Quincy, Illinois, a progressive, arts-oriented community of approximately 45,000. Canton is located on U.S. 61, 30 miles north of historic Hannibal, Missouri, the boyhood home of the famous American author Mark Twain. St. Louis is within a 2½-hour drive, and Chicago and Kansas City are close enough to be significant factors in the cultural life of the College. Culver-Stockton sits atop a hill that overlooks Canton and the Mississippi River. Canton exhibits a strong sense of community pride, civic involvement, and a very low crime rate.

Academic Life
The Culver-Stockton emphasis on career preparation is enhanced by the liberal arts. The development of student skills in writing, speaking, critical thinking, and problem solving is a critical element in the liberal arts emphasis. In addition, core courses in composition, religious studies, and speech combine with student choices from among five areas to ensure a wide breadth of study. Students must complete 124 credit hours for the bachelor’s degree. Major programs require from 30 to 62 credits. Double majors and minors are encouraged, adding further diversity and breadth to graduates’ qualifications as they approach the job market.

The College has committed itself to academic distinction. Students are challenged to achieve their maximum potential in learned skills, breadth and depth of knowledge, and understanding their own values. Students are assigned an academic adviser, who is prepared to assist students in achieving their educational goals. An individualized plan is developed and then updated each semester until graduation.

For highly motivated students, including freshmen, the Honors Scholars Program provides the opportunity to participate in certain specially designated courses and events, culminating in an opportunity for independent study or research in an area of the student’s special interest. The program is especially helpful for students planning for graduate programs.

Exploratory and professional internships are available in all majors and are viewed as an important part of the career selection process. More than 700 internship sites are available. Combined with an active career counseling and placement service that includes computerized interest and preference testing, on- and off-campus internships are a key element in the Culver-Stockton approach to preparing students for employment after graduation.

Work completed at other colleges and universities is transferable toward Culver-Stockton graduation requirements, and various testing procedures (e.g., CLEP, AP, PEP) allow credit for equivalent knowledge or experience. Individualized learning options are plentiful; they range from individually negotiated independent study to the option of developing an individualized major.

The College operates on a two-semester calendar, with the first semester concluding before Christmas and the spring semester ending in early to mid-May. Summer sessions of varying lengths are also available to students. All programs and classes are characterized by individual attention to the needs and interests of the student.

In January 2006, the College began offering online courses for nontraditional students through the Connected Campus program. Degree-completion programs include the Bachelor of Science in business administration and Bachelor of Science in management information systems.

With the exception of students who are married or living with parents, all students receiving college financial aid are required to participate in the College’s room and board plan. Variable board plans are available for the dining hall and Cat’s Pause, the campus snack bar and cybercafé.

Financial Aid / Scholarships
Culver-Stockton College understands the financial needs of students and their families and works to make a C-SC education affordable. The College assists every qualified student to meet the costs of earning a C-SC degree. Through scholarships, grants, work-study opportunities, and loans, the College helps to offset the cost of a college education for qualified students. Through careful tuition pricing and a variety of financial aid options, C-SC is a great value for a superb educational experience.

The College participates in all federal and state financial aid programs, presenting aid packages that are based on need and merit. Merit awards are based on academic achievement as well as performance—theater, music, art, leadership, and athletics. The College requires the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Pillars for Excellence full-tuition scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis each year for high-achieving students who meet certain GPA and ACT criteria.

Admission Requirements / Application
Prospective students are expected to have completed a college-preparatory course of study of 15 units at an accredited secondary school. A proper foundation to facilitate success in college studies includes 4 units of English, 3 units of history, at least 2 units of mathematics (algebra and geometry), and 2 to 4 units of science. Students who intend to major in the science disciplines may wish to select additional high school courses in science and mathematics, and those interested in the humanities and social studies areas typically present additional course work in literature, foreign language, and history. Applicants must submit ACT or SAT scores. Each applicant for admission is given personal attention and is considered on the basis of academic performance, test scores, and personal attributes.
