Condordia University
College Description
Concordia University was founded in 1864 in Addison, Illinois, and relocated in 1913 to River Forest, Illinois, where it occupies 40 acres. Affiliated with the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, Concordia offers Christian education at the collegiate level as its way of sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ, aiding students in developing a sense of vocation and preparing them for leadership in a variety of fields and endeavors. The spiritual elements of college life and worship provide a focus for growth, renewal, and personal expressions of faith. Students come from large cities as well as small towns and farming communities. Thirty states and a number of other countries are represented. Small class sizes and a genuine caring atmosphere build student-faculty relationships that facilitate learning and leadership development.
Academic Life
Concordia's College of Education, College of Arts and Sciences, West Suburban College of Nursing, College of Graduate Studies, and College of Continuing Education offer more than sixty areas of study. The university offers the Bachelor of Arts in accounting, art, biology, business management, chemistry, communication and theatre, communications, computer information systems, computer science, computer science/mathematics, deaconess studies, director of Christian education studies, director of parish music studies, early childhood education, earth science, elementary education, English, exercise science and fitness management, geography/environmental science, graphic arts, history, mathematics, music, natural science, philosophy, political science, prelaw, premedicine, prepharmacy, preseminary, psychology, secondary education, social work, sociology, theological languages, and theology. Other degrees offered include the Bachelor of Music, Bachelor of Music Education, and Bachelor of Science in Nursing. In addition to a selective honors program, outstanding students may be offered membership to one of the following honor societies: Kappa Delta Pi (education), Phi Alpha Theta (history), and Alpha Kappa Delta (sociology).
Campus Life
Concordia University encourages spiritual growth through service to God and others. Students are active on campus as well as in the larger community. Some of Concordia's groups include Ongoing Ambassadors for Christ, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Concordia Youth Ministry Teams, Baby Holding, Inner City Missions, PACE-Jail Ministries, Bible Study and Prayer Groups, Careers for Christ Weekend Staff, and Admission Ambassadors. Students also serve in daily chapel. Concordia's Office of Career Services assists students in achieving their career goals by providing counseling in such areas as choosing a major and finding a first job. ð At Concordia, more than 50 percent of undergraduate students live on campus. Five residence halls, all within walking distance of campus activities, offer lounges, laundry facilities, vending machines, and microwaves. Rooms are equipped with beds, dressers, desks, lamps, and a phone with phone mail features. Students may also have Internet connection from their rooms.
Facilities and Resources
The Krentz Center for Education and Communication contains the Curriculum Library and Idea Center and television, radio production, and photography studios. Klinck Memorial Library contains 153,000 volumes and more than 500,000 microforms. Other academic facilities include the Early Childhood Center, Eifrig Hall (science building), Ferguson Art Gallery, McCormick Recital Hall, the Human Performance Laboratory, and the Center for Social Research in the Church. Concordia's two theaters, Werner Auditorium and Bergmann Theatre, have different types of stages that offer a variety of ways to present productions. Werner houses a proscenium stage that separates the actors from the audience. More intimate productions are presented in Bergmann, where several configurations can be used. Concordia University Information Systems houses a corporate-class computer cluster that services more than thirty area businesses and schools. The computers are also servers to the terminals, Microsoft Windows PCs, and Macintosh systems in campus labs and classrooms.
Concordia offers athletic opportunities for the serious competitor, as well as students just out for fun. As members of the NCAA Division III, Concordia's men and women compete in twelve intercollegiate sports and may participate in more than one varsity sport. Men's intercollegiate programs include baseball, basketball, cross-country, football, tennis, track and field, and yell leaders. Women's intercollegiate programs include basketball, cheerleaders, cross-country, pompons, softball, tennis, track and field, and volleyball. For students who enjoy games but not practices, intramurals are an excellent option. Teams are organized by residence floors and compete against one another for a championship Concordia mug. Here's what's available: badminton, baseball, bowling, cross-country, floor hockey, handball, powder puff football, softball, swimming, track and field, volleyball, and natari.
Financial Aid
Nearly 80 percent of students at Concordia University receive financial assistance. To be considered, students should submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the Concordia Application for Student Financial Assistance. These forms are mailed to all students who apply. Students who transfer credit to Concordia must forward financial aid transcripts from each college or university attended, even if financial assistance was not received. Financial assistance may combine a scholarship or grant, low-interest loan, and campus employment. Concordia must receive all financial assistance forms by June 1.
