Concordia College
Bronxville, New York

Overview
Founded in 1881, Concordia College is a four-year, coeducational liberal arts institution in suburban Westchester County, New York. The College is affiliated with the Lutheran Church and welcomes students of all faiths from thirty states and thirty countries. Concordia College is a Christian environment where students from many different cultures live, learn, and work together. As members of a close-knit community, Concordia students are mentored by a dedicated faculty and staff, most of whom live within a 10-minute walk of the campus. Students develop lifelong relationships as they prepare for fulfilling lives and careers. During their time at Concordia, students are encouraged to reach their full academic, spiritual, athletic, and artistic potential.

Concordia’s beautiful campus is a pleasing mix of new and newly renovated buildings. A standout facility on campus is the Sommer Center for Worship and the Performing Arts, a 650-seat music center so acoustically well-balanced that artists such as Itzhak Perlman, Yehudi Menuhin, and Harry Connick Jr. have recorded there. Other specialized facilities include the Schoenfeld Campus Center, Scheele Memorial Library, and Meyer Athletic Center, which includes a gymnasium, a weight room, a fitness center, two squash courts, three indoor tennis courts, and five outdoor tennis courts (three composite and two clay). Facilities include baseball, soccer, and softball fields.

Concordia College is accredited by the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools and registered by the New York State Education Department.

Location and Community
Concordia’s 33-acre campus is set in the affluent and peaceful village of Bronxville. The village is home to more than 7,000 people, including UN diplomats, investment brokers, and a wide range of professionals. Entertainment, shopping, and employment opportunities are available within this safe and picturesque village. Students also benefit from of the limitless experiences offered in New York City, a 25-minute commuter train ride from Bronxville.

Academic Life
Concordia College provides students with an excellent education by building each degree program upon a foundation of basic skills, knowledge, and values. To graduate, students must complete the Concordia Distinctive (the College’s popular core curriculum), the program of study, and general studies requirements, integrated with field experience and internships in Westchester County and the New York area. This is known as the Concordia Experience.

Concordia operates on a two-semester calendar. A minimum of 122 completed semester hours is required to earn a bachelor’s degree.

Assistance is available via peer tutors. The staff of the Writing Center works with students at all levels and offers supplemental instruction to support Concordia’s Writing Across the Curriculum Program. Concordia puts great emphasis on critical-thinking and communication skills.

The Career Development Center counsels students in career, vocational, and academic choices. The center coordinates resume and interview preparation, tutorial assistance, and postings for full-time and part-time jobs. Concordia alumni achieve significant roles in society: President of PaineWebber, Superintendent of Schools—San Francisco, star of the Sopranos cast, software engineers at PriceWaterhouse, social work manager, and publisher of Business Week magazine.

The Concordia Fellows Program (honors) is open via application to all students who demonstrate high academic achievement. Fellows are enriched through a variety of unique academic experiences, seminars, and travel.

Concordia offers an intensive English as a second language (ESL) program, serving students at a variety of proficiency levels. The ESL program is housed on campus and serves both matriculated and nonmatriculated students.

Concordia also offers an Accelerated Degree Program (ADP) within Adult Education for adult students over age 25 who have previously earned a minimum of 60 college credits. ADP students who meet the program requirements can typically earn their degrees, in either business administration or behavioral science, in eighteen months of intensive study. The Adult Education program also offers an associate degree in liberal studies.

Concordia College’s faculty members are committed to student success. The 15:1 student-faculty ratio enables students and faculty members to interact on a very personal level. The focus of Concordia faculty members is on teaching; teaching assistants are not utilized. Professors and students conduct research at all levels.

Concordia is part of the national Concordia University System, which is made up of ten colleges and universities affiliated with the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod. Students may enroll for up to one year at any of these sister institutions. Students may also study overseas at Oak Hill College in London, the Westfield House in Cambridge, and other international sites.

The Concordia Connection Program is for students with diagnosed learning differences. Support services are provided to qualified students who meet regular admission requirements but need specific assistance in order to maximize their academic success. Space in this program is quite limited and additional fees are assessed.

The B.A. program includes biology, education (New York State, NCATE-accredited), English/communication, liberal studies (with the following fields: art, biblical languages, English, history, math, music, new media, psychology, religion, and sociology), and social sciences.

The B.S. programs include business administration and social work (CSWE-accredited).

Facilities and Resources
In addition to traditional holdings, the Scheele Memorial Library participates in a forty-library online system that gives students access to a multitude of academic resources. The library supports 467 active subscriptions and contains the Media Center, a distance learning classroom, a curriculum materials center, and the Concordia Gallery. A new 22,500-square-foot facility, Krenz Academic Center, is scheduled to open in fall 2006 and will showcase sophisticated, computer-based, multimedia instructional space, an expanded art gallery, an auditorium-style classroom, a media-production center, and state-of-the-art computer and information technology installations. The new space is on the second floor of the library, which was designed in 1974 to accommodate a significant addition.

Brunn-Maier Science Hall houses science laboratories, the Writing Center, computer labs (PC and Mac), and the Halter Graphics Laboratory, which is equipped for graphics, desktop publishing, and music composition.

The Sommer Center for Worship and the Performing Arts includes a stunning recital/lecture hall, the College Chapel, and private rehearsal rooms for vocal, instrumental, and organ practice. Schoenfeld Campus Center, the hub of student life, provides a venue for student activities, intramurals, and dramatic performances. Historic Stein Hall houses the Concordia Conservatory, including individual and group studios and a keyboard lab.

Campus Life
Concordia is intentionally small, with a population of approximately 700; its students are active and involved. The Student Government Association supports more than twenty-five clubs and organizations. Opportunities range from student publications to social-concern groups, Bible study to student government, and drama to intramurals. Concordia’s talented choirs and ensembles perform on campus and throughout the United States, Brazil, and Germany.

Sports / Varsity Athletics
The College’s eleven varsity teams compete in the NCAA Division II in baseball, basketball, cross-country, soccer, tennis, softball, and volleyball. Teams repeatedly earn national ranking, and outstanding individuals are recruited in the professional drafts.

Expenses
Tuition and fees for the academic year are $21,700. Room and board charges were $8230. Costs are the same for in-state, out-of-state, and transfer students.

Financial Aid / Scholarships
Concordia strives to make a college education affordable to students from all backgrounds through an aggressive financial aid program. Need-based grants and merit-based and church vocation scholarships are available. Merit scholarships are awarded to students with academic, music, athletic, and leadership abilities. More than 95 percent of Concordia students receive financial aid.

A student’s financial aid package may include a combination of grants, scholarships, employment, and student loans. To be considered, students must file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Concordia’s FAFSA code is 002709.
