Overview
Columbia Union College (CUC) was established
in 1904 as the Washington Training Institute. In 1914, the College took
the name Washington Missionary College, and in 1942, the College was given
accreditation as a four-year, degree-granting institution by the Middle
States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. In 1961, the College
constituency voted to change the name of the school to Columbia Union
College.
Columbia Union College is a learning community committed to the Seventh-day
Adventist Christian vision of excellence and service. This cosmopolitan
institution challenges students to seize the opportunities for learning
in the nation’s capital in order to become moral leaders in communities
throughout the world.
Columbia Union College is a coeducational college that offers degree
programs in liberal arts, sciences, and selected professional fields.
The College is accredited for granting associate and baccalaureate degrees
and has an M.B.A. program. CUC offers a combination of spiritual, cultural,
academic, athletic, and employment opportunities. CUC is located just
outside the nation’s capital, which gives students an abundance
of hands-on employment, educational, and entertainment opportunities.
The School of Graduate and Professional Studies provides an M.B.A., undergraduate-degree-completion
opportunities for adult learners, certificate programs, and distance education
programs.
CUC takes pride in its graduates and those who instruct them and in its
commitment to be more than an institution of higher education. It is a
community of spiritual, cultural, athletic, and career opportunities under
the spirit of Christianity.
Location
and Community
Columbia Union College is located in Takoma Park, Maryland. The College
occupies 19 acres in this small community, just minutes from Washington,
D.C. A RideOn bus stop is located on the campus, and a Metrorail station
is just a mile down the road, allowing CUC students access to all parts
of the nation’s capital, Maryland, and Virginia. Shopping malls,
restaurants, recreational resources, and entertainment abound around the
campus of CUC. Students frequent the wide variety of interests in the
local area and are also employed in prestigious internships and part-time
positions in Washington, D.C. The list of employers of CUC students continues
to grow and includes the Baltimore National Aquarium, the CIA, Children’s
Hospital, Seventh-day Adventist World Headquarters, IBM, NASA/Goddard
Space Flight Center, National Institutes of Health, Smithsonian Institution,
Walt Disney World, the White House, the Discovery Channel, and WTTG—Fox
Channel 5. Students and faculty members also take advantage of the educational
resources that surround CUC. Visits to an exhibit at a Smithsonian museum
or research conducted at the Library of Congress aid in classroom studies.
Academic
Life
Advanced facilities for radio and television are available. Columbia Union
College has its own television studio and audio and video postproduction
suites. The communication department has several high-tech Electronic
Field Production (EFP) cameras available for student use. WGTS-FM, a contemporary
Christian radio station, is also located on the campus of CUC, and many
students work there.
CUC has invested in extensive computer facilities that are used by all
students. A large computer laboratory of PCs and Macs is available for
student use, and there are many other computer areas on campus. Each dorm
resident has Internet access from his or her room and a personal e-mail
account.
Weis Library, on the campus of CUC, has a collection of more than 140,000
volumes and subscribes to more than 350 periodicals. Students have electronic
access to more than 9,000 full-text journals. Columbia Union College is
a member of the Maryland Interlibrary Consortium, providing access to
holdings in the libraries of College of Notre Dame of Maryland, Loyola
College, Hood College, Mount St. Mary’s University, and Villa Julie
College. The consortium uses the Endeavor Voyager System to support a
shared Web-based public catalog and selected electronic databases. The
library utilizes the services of the Online Computer Library Center (OCLC).
OCLC’s database contains approximately 61 million bibliographic
records from library collections around the world. Interlibrary loan service
is expedited through use of this online system. In addition, Weis Library
provides Internet and CD-ROM access to many other electronic resources.
Majors
Offered:
Columbia Union College grants the Bachelor of
Arts degree, with majors in biology, chemistry, education, English (emphasis
in prelaw), English education, general studies, history (emphasis in prelaw),
journalism (concentrations in broadcast, documentary production, and print;
emphasis in media production), liberal studies, mathematics, mathematics
education, music, philosophy and religion (emphasis in prelaw), political
studies (emphasis in prelaw), psychology, public communication (concentrations
in intercultural communication and public relations; emphasis in media
studies), religion (concentrations in lay ministry, metropolitan ministry,
and religious education; emphasis in prelaw), and theology (concentrations
in metropolitan ministry and pastoral ministry; emphasis in prelaw). Bachelor
of Science degrees are also offered, with majors in accounting, biochemistry,
biology, business administration (emphases in entrepreneurship, finance,
human resource management, information systems, international business,
long-term health-care administration, marketing, and prelaw), chemistry,
computer science, counseling psychology, elementary education, elementary
education/special education: dual certification, general studies, health-care
administration, information systems, mathematics, mathematics education,
nursing, organizational management, physical education, and physical education:
teacher certification. Bachelor of Music degrees are offered in music
education and music performance. Associate of Applied Science degrees
are offered in accounting, computer science, early childhood education,
engineering, general studies, information systems, and respiratory care.
An Associate of Science degree is offered in engineering. Columbia Union
College also offers Associate of Arts degrees and a Bachelor of Science/Registered
Nurse degree.
Students may select from several minor concentrations, including accounting,
American religious history, biblical languages, behavioral science, biology,
broadcast journalism, business administration, chemistry, computer science,
English, entrepreneurship, French, forensic psychology, German, health-care
administration, history, information systems, intercultural communication,
international studies, management, marketing, mathematics, media production,
metropolitan ministry, music, organizational management, philosophy, physical
education, physics, political studies, print journalism, psychology, public
relations, religion, secondary education, Spanish, security resource management,
sports administration/coaching, and writing.
Facilities
and Resources
There are 53 full-time and 3 part-time faculty members at Columbia Union
College. More than 100 adjunct instructors are employed by CUC. The College
prides itself on the integrity of its faculty members and the experience
that they bring to the College. The ratio of full-time undergraduate students
to full-time undergraduate faculty members is 11:1. Faculty members of
CUC are the personal career advisers of students and guide students through
their courses of study and preparation for the future. Faculty members
share contacts from their professional fields to aid students in obtaining
internships and career placement.
Campus
Life
Columbia Union College is committed to students. The faculty members of
the College are qualified professionals with practical experience. Classes
are small (12:1 ratio), and teachers have the time to give students individual
attention and training for their futures.
Expenses
Full tuition (12 to 16 credit hours) averages $16,514 for the academic year, which consists of two semesters. Part-time tuition (up to 9 credit hours) was $688 per credit hour. The general fee was $268 per semester. Summer sessions vary in tuition prices. Some courses require additional service or laboratory fees. There is a nonrefundable application fee of $25.
Financial
Aid / Scholarships
Columbia Union College makes every effort to help students seek out and
obtain financial assistance, and it also provides information for students
seeking part-time employment.
CUC offers institutional scholarships, such as those for musical and
athletic groups on campus, as well as scholarships for proven academic
excellence. More than ninety-five percent of traditional students received
some form of financial aid in 2004—05, and nearly $12 million in
financial aid was awarded.
The Financial Aid Office of CUC administers federal and state grant and
loan programs. Appropriate application forms for financial aid are provided
by the financial aid office and are mailed to students who request them.
Students who receive any form of aid, including scholarships, are required
to fill out a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
Admission
Requirements / Application
A minimum combined score of 900 on the SAT I
(or at least 450 in each section) or a minimum composite score of 18 on
the ACT is recommended. Applicants must be graduates of an accredited
secondary school or have earned a GED certificate. Twenty-one Carnegie
units are required, including 4 years of high school English and 2 years
each of history, mathematics, and science. An essay is recommended, and
an interview, as well as transcripts from previously attended colleges,
is required.
