Cleveland Institute of Art

College Description
The Cleveland Institute of Art was founded in 1882 and is a fully accredited professional undergraduate art school. It offers a five-year program leading to a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. A major may be chosen from one of fifteen studio areas, five each within fine arts, crafts, and design: drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, and sculpture; ceramics, enameling, fiber, glass, and metals+jewelry; and graphic design, illustration, medical illustration, industrial design, and interior design. CIA is one of the only schools in the country to offer such a wide range of classes within each the fine arts, crafts, and design disciplines. A comprehensive liberal arts program, extending over the five years required for the BFA, is also an integral part of all study at the Institute.
Our campus consists of the 488 acres of parks and buildings known as University Circle, an educational, civic, religious, and cultural complex located 4 miles east of downtown Cleveland.
Academic Life
The two-year foundation Program includes art history, and world literature with accompanying studio work in drawing, painting ,design, and computer basics. In the third year, with the beginning of major study, the student has increasing opportunities to pursue personal artistic objectives. By the fifth year, studio work is essentially independent in nature, under the guidance of a faculty adviser. The other liberal arts requirements are distributed over these three years in the major with study available in sociology, multi-cultural studies, aesthetics, anthropology, and additional history, art and film history and criticism, and literature classes.
The option for cross registration in academics outside of CIA at several Northeast Ohio Colleges, including nearby Case Western Reserve University and Cleveland Institute of Music, starts in a student's third year. At that time also, students will have the chance for semester long mobility study at any other AICAD school.
The ten semester's requirements for graduation are 150-155 credits; 95-106 in studio courses and 47-55 in liberal arts courses. Forty-two to 51 hours in a particular studio area constitute a major while optional minors are 9 hours.
Campus Life
The Cleveland Museum of art is directly across the street from CIA, Case Western Reserve University is next door, and the world-famous Cleveland Orchestra performs a block away. Other institutions within walking distance that offer a variety of cultural and social experiences are the Greater Cleveland Garden Center, the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, the Western Reserve Historical Society, the Cleveland Institute of Music and the Cleveland Cinematheque. Our residence hall is mid-point between our two other buildings. Unmarried, non-commuting first-time students under the age of 21 are required to live in the hall at least the first year. Students share a double room with a roommate. The Student Activities office plans both educational and social activities for all CIA students.
Facilities and Resources
Located in University Circle our three buildings, the main Gund Building, the Joseph McCullough Center for Visual Arts, and our residence hall make up our campus. Computer laboratories exist in both buildings allow students easy access to the computers at any time. Exhibition opportunities are available to students in the Coffee House Gallery, juried student exhibitions in Reinberger Gallery, and in hallway or the Library showcases. The Jessica Gund Memorial Library houses 42,000 books and exhibition catalogues, 220 magazines, and 85,000 slides of art and architecture.
Athletics/Sports
CIA students can participate in sports through Case Western Reserve University's inter-mural sports program. Students have access to exercise equipment at Wade Recreational Commons for free and Emerson Gym and Mather Gymnasium at CWRU for a small annual fee. Available at the gyms are swimming, racquetball, fencing, archery, a weight room, and a jogging track.
Financial Aid
The Institute participates in all of the Federal assistance programs including the Federal Pell Grant, Federal Work Study, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant, and Federal Perkins Loan Programs. In addition, the Institute has its own grant program for new and returning students. Financial Assistance is offered to students whenever possible. All aid is granted on the basis of financial need, as demonstrated through the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). A certified copy of the most recent tax return (form 1040) and the Cleveland Institute of Art Financial Aid form are also required.
Merit scholarships and grants, which currently range between $2,000 to full tuition, are awarded in a scholarship competition for high school seniors based on outstanding portfolios and strong academic preparation.
Admission Requirements
At CIA, admissions officers counsel prospective students on an individual basis. If a students wants to attend, the Institute wishes to help; it will also help students find alternatives to this college. Any student who wants assistance is encouraged to contact the Office of Admissions.
Applicants must be high school graduates or must pass the high school equivalency examination. A high school transcripts of any subsequent college study must be filed in the Admissions Office. ACT or SAT are also required. No credentials filed for admissions will be released after receipt by CIA. A portfolio of at least twelve of the applicant's most recent works must also be submitted for review on one of the specified dates. A personal interview is not an admissions requirement, although it is recommended.
