The Citadel Charleston, SC 29409
For nearly 160 years The Citadel has challenged members of its corps of Cadets to reach their intellectual, physical and mental potentials. Generations of Cadets who have experienced the demanding dimensions of life at The Citadel have been well prepared to excel in their professional fields and to make significant contributions to society. The Citadel teaches "total personal development" in a military atmosphere. All Cadets have the same uniforms, rights and privileges. From this common beginning, the faculty, staff and upper class Cadets help each individual meet the challenge of reaching his or her full potential. Graduation and retention are very important priorities at The Citadel. The graduation rate of athletes is nearly 90 percent-significantly higher than the national average. The variety of student support systems provide ample opportunities for students to receive one-on-one assistance. The Writing Center, math labs, computer labs, faculty advisement, Cadet advisement and the Counseling Center are a few of the support programs contributing to the college's high retention and graduation rates. The Citadel has an excellent academic reputation. U.S. News & World Report continually ranks the College among the top ten in its category in the magazine's surveys of "America's Best Colleges." More than 96 percent of the faculty hold terminal degrees, and the low student/teacher ratio allows quality interaction between students and faculty. Intellectual growth is coupled with development in personal discipline, ethics and leadership. Located in Charleston, South Carolina, The Citadel gives Cadets an opportunity to experience the gracious "old and new South." Great restaurants and unque shops are a short distance from campus, and one can enjoy year-round outdoor activities such as golf, tennis and fishing. The historic Charleston Harbor and Market Place are frequented by Cadets and young ladies from nearby colleges. The 30 percent black population of Charleston offers a very comfortable atmosphere for African-Americans. Extracurricular activities abound at The Citadel. Cadets can choose to participate in intercollegiate teams, 31 intramural programs, 16 club sports, or any of the 100-plus cadet organizations on campus. Activities range from playing pickup basketball to touring major eastern cities as a member of The Citadel Gospel Choir. The Cadet Band gained international recognition while performing in Scotland. The African-American Society is a thriving and vital club with membership open to all students at The Citadel. The society promotes greater understanding between students and an increased awareness of the African-American heritage. The organization promotes the social and spiritual growth of its members with picnics, parties, guest speakers and projects such as sponsoring a homeless child in Africa. In addition, it provides another avenue for establishing lifelong fraternal relationships with your peers. |
