College Description
Founded in 1851, Carson-Newman is a four-year private liberal arts college affiliated with the Tennessee Baptist Convention. C-N is conveniently located in the eastern part of Tennessee, just 30 miles from Knoxville, which has a population of 450,000, and 45 miles from Gatlinburg, a gateway to the Great Smoky Mountains. At Carson-Newman, students can choose from over 50 areas of study and seven degree options. Undergraduate degrees include Associate of Arts, Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Music, Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Graduate students can choose from a number of master's degrees in the fields of education and counseling as well as a Master of Science in nursing. Carson-Newman believes in educating both the mind and the heart, and is committed to providing superior Christian education in an environment that encourages intellectual, spiritual and personal growth.
Academic Life
Academic Life The seven academic divisions of Carson-Newman are Applied Human Sciences, Business, Education, Fine Arts, Humanities, Natural Sciences and Mathematics and Social Sciences. The College operates on a traditional semester system. Mayterm is a three-week intensive period of study that gives students the opportunity to earn 3 credit hours. Summer school is offered as a six-week program of study. All baccalaureate degrees require completion of 128 semester hours. Students must complete 51 semester hours in general education requirements and a total of 36 semester hours at the junior/senior level. Specific course requirements vary depending on the major and degree program. Honors courses, independent study and internships are available to those who qualify. Additionally, students have the opportunity to participate in a variety of study-abroad programs. Advanced credit is available for students who achieve required scores on AP exams, CLEP tests and C-N departmental exams. Carson-Newman has an exceptionally high placement rate in professional programs in law, medicine, business and theological study, which is testimony to the excellence of its rigorous academic program.
Campus Life
There are more than 30 student clubs and organizations that C-N students can be a part of, including honor societies, fraternities and sororities, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Appalachian Outreach. The Student Government Association at C-N is the oldest in the Southeast, so the tradition of students being an active and integrated part of the College has a long history. The hub of campus activity is the spectacular $11-million student center. The award-winning 96,000-square-foot building is where the Carson-Newman "family" meets to study, exercise, eat or just socialize. Students take advantage of an Olympic-size pool, running track, racquetball courts, the College bookstore, a post office, a dining area and an outdoor caf. C-N provides numerous opportunities for Christian ministry including singing ensembles, mission projects, Bible studies and Spring Break mission trips.
Facilities and Resources
Facilities and Resources C-N offers the facilities and resources necessary for the enrichment of each student's education. The 90-acre campus consists of 20 major buildings, most of them neo-Georgian architecture. Facilities include five computer labs, a word-processing lab, a 180,000-volume media services center, two theaters for drama production, two art galleries, 23 individual art studios, a student-run television station and the Student Activities Center. The Carson-Newman Music Building boasts the Thomas Recital Hall, one of the finest music facilities in the Southeast. Students participate in softball, tennis, flag football, basketball, sand volleyball and other sports on the numerous campus athletic fields and courts. Two men's and three women's residence halls accommodate 1,200 on-campus residents. Students are required to live on-campus their first three years or until they turn 21. Married student housing is available on a limited basis. All residence halls are wired for individual computer hook-ups, giving students access to e-mail, Netscape and the campus-wide computer network.
Athletics/Sports
Carson-Newman is a member of the NCAA Division II and the South Atlantic Conference. C-N fields a total of 16 men's and women's varsity teams, including baseball, basketball, cross country/track, golf, soccer, tennis and wrestling for men and basketball, cross country/track, soccer, softball, tennis and volleyball for women. Since joining the NCAA in 1993, C-N athletic teams have won numerous conference championships and have made 15 trips to post-season play. The Eagle football team has won five national championships. Carson-Newman students also enjoy taking part in the extensive intramural program. In addition to the standard team sports such as volleyball, basketball and softball, students can also participate in more nontraditional activities such as Spades, "Win, Lose or Draw," and Frisbee golf.
Financial Aid
Carson-Newman allocates thousands of dollars each year to help supplement the resources of families. In fact, 85% of C-N students receive some form of financial aid. Financial aid awards are tailored to meet students' economic needs. C-N participates in all state and federal aid programs, and awards are based on demonstrated need as documented by a need analysis form such as the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Additionally, applicants must complete a Carson-Newman Application for Financial Aid and Scholarships to be considered for aid. Academic scholarships are awarded based on academic achievement. The deadline for filing financial aid forms is April 1. Notification of financial aid awards is made on a rolling basis.
Admission Requirements
Carson-Newman College seeks applicants who demonstrate academic preparation and who possess an appreciation of and sensitivity to a Christian education and a liberal arts curriculum.
